Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
This poll is close becasue most of the people voting are so far away from Philly that they have never tasted a real cheese steak. Any steak purchased more than an hour outside of Philly probably needs to be slathered with every topping imaginable just to muscle it down.
I dunno. We have a cheesesteak place in town that makes them just how they're supposed to. They're greasy, drippy and the meat stands up on it's own. Fresh-baked bread, prime thin-sliced meat and Cheese Whiz (or your choice of cheese) and all the toppings you could want. A pretty good steak. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Quizno's doesn't even have a grill to cook the steak on it.
When my brother and I were kids we told one of our friends once to close his eyes and we were going to give him a spoonful of some really delicious homemade whipped cream.
We shoved a massive spoonful of mayo down this kid's throat. He ran down our steps and barfed in our backyard. I still crack up laughing about that story to this day.
Ohhhhh! THAT'S who you are! Thanks man. I hope your happy. I still to this day can't stand the site of mayo. In fact, I just threw up a bit in my mouth when I typed this. :vomit: Thanks again! Incidentally, I learned to never close my eyes again when someone offers me something to eat again. I guess I could've learned from a much harsher lesson. Perhaps I owe you another "thanks" :vomit: |

Did you ever eat one made within Philly city limits? |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I've had a Geno's one. It was actually comparable all things considered.

Did you like Geno's? I'm interested to hear what a Philly outsider thinks. Somehow they've become the mecca of cheesesteak places here in Philly but I think they're way overrated. The meat comes out a little too thick and chunky for my tastes. They do so much business there that I think they're getting lazy with the slicing of the meat, trying to turn out the sandwiches as fast as possible. I like it to be sliced ridiculously thin. I'm a big fan of Delissandro's, which is on the northern side of the city. Then there's a place near my house in the suburbs which makes a great one. In fact I think I'll hit that up for dinner tonight! |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I think it was maybe the whole concept of Geno's "being" Cheesesteak Mecca. I definitely agree it wasn't thin enough for me. For the amount of quantity they have, it was definitely tasty. Our hometown place has a better flavor though. I forget how much I paid at Geno's, but here is fairly expensive, something to the tune of 5-6 bucks for half a steak. It's all prime beef though and homemade ingredients (minus the cheeses).

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I eat both Geno's and Pat's in the same sitting. I thouhgt Geno's was better and I even eat that one second, meaning I was not close to being hungry anymore. I am not a Philly native.

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
No mayo.
Cheese (cheddar or American, NOT SWISS like John Kerry) Onions Peppers Grease Paper bag for the grease If it's not dripping, it's not a real cheesesteak. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
It's settled, I won't be telling my co-worker about this poll!

Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
A cheesesteak does not have Mayo on it.
BUT: I used to work at Jerry's sub shop. We had something called a "steak and cheese" that we'd eat with Mayo, Lettuce, Tomato, and hot peppers. It was good. But it wasn't a cheesesteak.
This is the fundamental argument here. A "steak and cheese" while very good with its lettuce, mayo, mato and mushrooms is not a "cheesesteak" at all. A "cheesesteak" must be steak with cheese melted into it on the grill or cheese wizzed. Plain and simple. Both are great. But one of them you basically can only get in Philly. I settle for the other just about everywhere else and they are delicious. This same argument applies to pizza versus Pizza Hut and Dominos. While I enjoy a fine "pizza" from Pizza Hut now and then there is certainly no way I'd call it real pizza. Just like the "subs" from Subway are just glorified sandwhiches and not really subs. |
