I am sure that a large % of ESPN's employees are excellent at what they do, but they have certainly made some questionable hires when it comes to on air NFL talent. I mean they hired Emmit Smith and he can barely get out a sentence. I know you work there Smoot and your in a tough spot to criticize people directly but you have to shake your head at it in general.

On a positive note, I think Jaws is the best in the business so it's not all bad.

Sean Salisbury = a journeyman with no clear talent, and a seemingly bad attitude.

Sure they've made some questionable hires (Emmitt on-air is abysmal) and those are usually more scrutinized than the solid under the radar hires they make. I don't know where you work, but you mean to tell me that ESPN is the only place that makes questionable hires? Of course not.

But I don't see why I have to shake my head at it in general.

I've always liked Cris as a 3rd, or 4th commentator kind of guy...

I can handle him in small doses, and hopefully they'll realize that.

The problem is when they promote him to "The Guy", he just seems to ramble on. Maybe it's just that my ADD can't handle it. I don't know.

Personally, I wasn't mortified by Salisbury... he wasn't horrible and I couldn't care less about his personal life (bring Marv Albert in!).

I work for a broker dealer in the investment management business. And yes my company makes questionable hires from time to time...and they are not scrutinized publicly like at ESPN. I may have phrased what i meant poorly...I did not mean to imply that you should shake your head at ESPN in general. I just don't understand how anyone can listen to Emmit Smith talk and think he would make a good on camera NFL hire? I would personally shake my head at that decision and blame the person who hired him because anyone can see after listening to him for 20 seconds that he is not suited for that line of work.

i figured it,s up too espn anyways so another expert bites the dust.....oh sean did pretty well i thought but maybe it was time since clayton couldn,t deal with him during their one on one clashes....

I love Charles Mann. I consider him a friend...but he really struggles on camera. It doesn't come naturally to him at all.

I think Gmanc is a big Qadry fan

Anyone remember Seth Joyners work on NFL Network? He was one of the first people they hired when they started the network a few years back. He just mumbled. The worst I have ever seen including all the sports. Made everyone mentioned on this thread look like a seasoned professional.

but you've got to admit, it is different. i work for a small grading company. my employers make bad decisions all the time but nobody knows except for the 15 people that work there. when espn makes a bad decision, like the one we're discussing, millions of people know about it. you would think espn would want to put people in front of the camara that the majority of the viewers are going to like. imo, jim rome,steven a smith,sean salisbury,and chris carter are all bad choices. i can understand trying emmit smith out because he is a very likable guy.

Charles Bakley is the best player to TV personality that I've seen. If the NFL could find an equivelant then that would be great, but no one comes to mind.

I personally think Jim Rome is awesome. And I suspect that Carter and Salisbury would be regarded a bit more highly here if not for the "anti-Redskins slant." But there are so many on-air personalities, many of whom are very good.

But I mean it's pretty obvious how it works around here (and across the Internet message board world). When ESPN makes a "mistake" or has something not so nice to say about the Skins we're all over it (look at how many posts there were in the thread about Len P's article about Gibbs after he resigned). When the opposite happens we tend to be pretty quiet (look at how many posts there were in the thread about Clayton's article about Gibbs when he retired).
