Re: Joe Gibbs and Veteran QB's
Yeah and we only got a fourth round pick in trading him away. In hindsight that was a massive fail.
Something happen in his relationship with Gibbs. Rypien was no stellar athlete either and before the 92 season Rypien was not very good in actual games. So before Rypien ha his break out 92 season I was surprised Stan could not beat out Rypien. I was partial to Stan over Rypien. I am not sure what the issue was with Stan and Gibbs/FO? I have always assumed it was Stan not working hard enough.?.?
As was I. And the pick ended up being a 3rd (it was a conditional 4th) I was told by teammates and other people associated with the team back then that-and that is kind of convoluted so bear with me-Gibbs didn't like Humphries, never wanted to draft him. Mainly because of the work ethic questions. But Beathard was a big fan, and so was Richie Petitbon. And Cooke gave the overriding decision in Beathard's favor on the Humphries pick. And Beathard's thinking was that Gibbs had been hinting at retiring at the end of the 80s so Beathard figured he had his new coach and their mutually agreed upon QB ready to go for when Gibbs left. But Gibbs didn't go and Beathard moved on. And then he took Humphries just before Richie became HC, which pissed Richie off. |
Re: Joe Gibbs and Veteran QB's
That makes sense.
I knew Beathard and Gibbs did not always agree on player personnel. Nobody is perfect and neither of them was either. Beathard drafted Ryan Leaf! Ouch! |
Gibbs 1.0 was fantastic. Gibbs 2.0 was a disaster that the organization is only now getting out from under. You cant infer anything about Gibbs 1.0 by looking at Gibbs 2.0.
WOW. You do realize that in the last 4 years since Gibbs 2.0 the skins have finished in 4th place in the NFC east...during Gibbs 2.0, he led a very mediocre team to 2 playoffs and their only playoff victory in this Millennium? What other coach has recently taken his Redskins team to the playoffs 50% of the time? You got it....Joe Gibbs 1.0 Not Shanny, Not Norv, Not Zorn or Spurrier (obviously), not Pardee, not Shottenheimer, only George Allen matched the success of Gibbs 2.0. Other than that you'd have to go back to when the Wizard of Oz was cutting edge. That was Ray Flaherty, the only other Redskins coach to go to the playoffs 50% of the time And win multiple championships. Even Lombardi couldn't get the Skins in the playoffs. Gibbs is a winner, plain and simple...and it was a joy when he was hired again and brought respectability back to the team while Vinny was here, if you recall. I am sick and tired of hearing how crappy Gibbs was when he returned. He had a foolish owner, a horrible GM, at best an average team, a backup quarterback and still had them "fight their guts out" for him. Do you realize that prior to this year, in the last 19 years since Gibbs 1.0 we only went to the playoffs ONCE excluding Gibbs 2.0? Name me a better Redskins coach than Gibbs 2.0...I am willing to listen. |
Gibbs 1.0

In the end it's the players that make it go, not the coaches who call the plays and design them. |

I disagree, example Marty schottenheimer. His conservative style cost him playoff wins more than once. |
Re: Joe Gibbs and Veteran QB's
I was surprised that Brown was ranked 6th. The man won a slew of championships and was more of an innovator than Lombardi, Noll, or Shula and Walsh developed the West Coast offense under his tutelage (although Walsh felt Brown purposely held him back). In so many ways, he is responsible for the game as it is now played.
So I guess the top 5 are Lombardi, Halas, Walsh (If Walsh beats out either of these two, I will puke) Shula, Noll. Brown was jobbed. |
Gibbs 1.0
OTOH, Gibbs 1.0 had Beathard pick players, not Vinny and Danny.

Brown won 7 championships, developed the so called WCO. Bill Parcells owned Bill Walsh, in my opinion Walsh is not better than Gibbs, Noll, Parcells or Brown. Chuck Noll's Steelers from the early 70's would destroy any 49er team, those are best teams I've ever seen, they were mean and loaded, Noll did it with Bradshaw, he was no Joe Montana. When you have clowns like Berman, Cowherd, Golic, they are going to play favorites, Ditka and Reiley seem like the fair ones. Like · Reply · Share · Flag |

The Cowboys ran a very simple version of Don Coryell's offense. If it doesn't have Aikman, Emmitt, Irvin and an all world o-line, they don't win 3 Super Bowl's in 4 years. In the end, it always comes down to players and how they execute the offense. No disrespect to Bill Walsh or Don Coryell. They were both great head coaches and great minds of offense. But if Walsh doesn't have Montana, and let's say Steve Deberg, he's not going down in history as one of the greatest coaches ever. |

Not only was he way ahead of his time, with all of the shifting, a lot of motion, the shotgun formation and flex defense, he called both the offense and defense. To me, he was one of the best, if not the best. |
