The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins were high on Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema before hiring Joe Philbin in 2012, but the sides disagreed on whether Russell Wilson could be an NFL starting quarterback.

This is an amazing story, and it's a slow news week ahead of the Super Bowl, so we'll shout it out. Per ace beat writer Armando Salguero, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was high on Bielema for the head-coaching job, but Bielema and the personnel department led by ex-GM Jeff Ireland hit a wall when Bielema suggested the Dolphins take Wilson in the second round of the 2012 draft. Bielema allegedly even promised the Dolphins a Super Bowl within five years if they take Wilson, who was Bielema's quarterback at Wisconsin. Bielema pulled out of the running for the job over "personnel issues," and the rest is history. Ireland took Ryan Tannehill with the No. 8 overall pick, and Wilson went to Seattle in the third round. The Dolphins remain doormats, while Wilson is going to back-to-back Super Bowls.

Wilson probably would not have done as well as he has done in Seattle, because I'd doubt he would have the right talent that has allowed him to develop into a top QB in the league.

Ironically, I think Wilson would have done a terrific job in Arizona (who went with Palmer) and possibly San Francisco.

Can you believe that Mike McCarthy actually had the gall to fire his ST coach, after [U]nine[/U] years of service? He even mentioned the guy's wife by name in the announcement and "wished them well" (while doing them wrong).

What he did was morally bankrupt IMO because McCarthy himself was the key contributor to the Packer's loss. For starters, when the Seahawks scored on the fake FG the GB FG unit shouldn't even have been on the field. McCarthy should have kept his defense in the game to guard against what happened. Also, anybody can muff the catch of an onside kick. That's not about coaching.

McCarthy failed to grasp that his team needed to put up more points in the first half. If he had, he would have gone for it at least on the second 4th and goal they had. The worst that could have happened would have been they would have had Seattle pinned on their own 1 yard line.

Then McCarthy shut down the GB passing game (featuring his MVP candidate QB) way too early and it cost his team dearly.

Of course, if anyone should have been fired, it was McCarthy. But his is the NFL and, for NFL coaches, designating scapegoats to keep their own jobs is a way of life.

Good job, Mike! That was NFL scapegoating at its finest. BTW, nice touch mentioning the guy's wife as if you give a damn about his family.
