And I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I think I will.
See the bottom of this post: http://www.thewarpath.net/redskins-locker-room/17445-have-we-seen-last-archuleta-skins-3.html#post287577 Do I win a Warpath t-shirt or something? Maybe a piece of pie? |

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
Guys i've been out of circulation for a while, but as far as Archuleta's status goes..... THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I admit I was on the bandwagon when we first signed him about a year ago.. Arch was a bum and a coward... i was at the last game of the year and i got to the game pretty early to catch warm-ups.... arch was the only player sitting in the end zone listening to his i-pod while the rest of the team was gearing up to play the g-men... WTF!!!!!????? DOUCHE!!!!!!!! Stoutmire is a good pick-up but i wish- and Mr. 21 prolly wishes- that the name was Clark instead....
No man named Landry should ever wear a Redskins uniform (RIP Tom)
Seriously though, we need help on the line. Landry will not make us a better team
Are you kidding? Landry would be a huge help in the secondary, the guy can match up and cover WR's let alone TE's and backs. One of our biggest problems last season was the absolute lack of safety help for Taylor and the rest of the D-backs, every team attacked AA and anyone else we put there, which hinderd Taylors effectivness with teams just throwing away from him. I think other than C. Johnson he may be the best player in the top 10 If you put 2 players at the safety position who both can run sub 4.4 that will help our CB's immensly, the ground both Taylor and Landry could cover as Safeties may be unpressidented in football history, when's the last time a team put 2 safeties on the field with that kind of speed? The guy could probably fill in at CB if need be with 4.34 speed. Safety may not be our biggest need, but given this kid's talent it just may be the right pick, I am not sold on the D-linemen out there, and we have a fair chance of trading down a couple of spots and picking up a 2nd rounder as well. This kid is a better safety than any of these linemen are at thier perspective positions. I would hope to trade down and grab Landry, then see if we can come away with one of 3 different players, either Jarvis Moss who I think in a couple of years after having added some bulk to his frame might be the best of the pass rushers, [he reminds me a little of Charles haley] Justin Blalock, or Ben Grubbs at the O-guard position. I think we need to draft for talent rather than need right now, I don't want to get wrapped up into drafting a lineman who is just an average NFL lineman, I see to many weakness in these lineman, there really isn't a total package amoungst them. |
Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
we need to draft someone to fix our crappy D line. landry won't fix this defense, and taking him won't leave us any picks to fix the D line, and there aren't any FAs to really help there (cept scott, who it doesn't look like we're signing).
landry might be great, but him + our Dline <<<< prioleau + #6pick in terms of overall effectiveness. moss is a late first rounder, and blalock and grubbs will go in the early 2nd at worst, before we'd have a chance to take any of them. |
Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
On my way home from work this morning I heard on Sirius Radio that the pick was for a 6th round which could move to a 5th round, like i asked before how can that change if the pick is a 2007 pick seeing that he wont hit the field before the draft.
Wow! I just saw this now.
Schneed, looks like you were right on. From the Post: washingtonpost.com - nation, world, technology and Washington area news and headlines "The Redskins and Archuleta agreed to postpone his original deadline of March 12 to receive his bonus payment in order to facilitate a trade, and the Bears, whose coach, Lovie Smith, has a strong relationship with the safety from their time together in St. Louis, ultimately agreed to pick up that $5 million payment as part of the deal, sources said, beating today's new deadline for the option." IMO this is UNBELIEVABLE!!! Snyder pulled a real coup here. I don't know how we convinced them to give us a 6th rounder AND take the $5M bonus payment. I didn't know they could but I'm loving it! I'm not sure if it's a change in the CBA, or if Snyder's just getting smarter with the signing bonuses, but it's been a trend with our recent signings. Arch, Randle-El, Carter, Lloyd, Samuels, Rabach, Patten, Jansen, Thomas, Moss, Taylor all had their signing bonuses split over the first 2 years of the contract. I figured this was just a way to delay some money past the current year, but now I see how valuable it can be. If you screw up on a guy (Arch), you still have time to recoup some of the signing bonus. As Frank the Tank once said, "It's genius!"
Bonuses count against whoever pays them so when we agreed to delay it and then traded him the Bears were on the hook for the payment and therefore the cap ramifications. I think paying a 5m bonus wasn't in their plans so they just reworked it to be several bonuses. He loses no money just doesn't get it all at once and he gets to play where he wanted to all along. As for JLC's post in the blog I am somewhat disappointed. I tend to agree with most of what he says but I think in this case he is letting his emotions take over. I'll agree that on the face of it it sounds weird to trade a guy just to have his cap hit bigger this year but he basically minimizes the future cap savings, minimizes the not having to give the guy 5m, and minimizes the effect this guy could have had as a distraction this season. I seem to remember on several occasions him making positive comments about Arch and his demeanor but in the end Arch comes off to me as a much more insidious type cancer. He clearly didn't want to be here. He didn't like that he wasn't going to start and then when he had to be an every down safety he didn't like that the scheme made him have to do something he wasn't good at. He had to cover and it made him look bad. Real bad. And then he gets mad because he feels hung out to dry by the coaches who I don't even remember once saying anything negative about him. Don't get me wrong the coaching should bear some responsibility here but as a professional he needed to man up and just do his job. Your a f*cking safety in the NFL and you can't cover! That's YOUR JOB dumbass. Stop getting all pissed off and go do your job. Don't weasel around and look all high and mighty by "taking the high road" and then do an off the record interview for ESPN basically throwing the entire coaching staff under the bus and expect them to be ok with it. It's called loyalty and just because you perceived that they didn't show you any deoesn't mean you aren't wrong. They're trying win football games and when one guy has made SERIOUS errors constantly don't think they aren't going to make changes. He should have felt "Well I am losing my job but at least no one has clled me out publicly. At least they're handling this internally." But no he just gets all pissy and acts like a baby because no one is holding his f*cking hand and treating him like the little bitch kid he is. He's probably lucky that Williams didn't have a hit taken out on him after the Friend article. The guy had to go. He was a distraction whether JLC wants to admit it or not. Rant over. |
Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
I was a little confused over JLC's take as well.
I don't know how anybody can be disappointed in getting rid of this guy, especially if he was the leak from last season. |
Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
I wonder what this means for Mike Brown?
Mike Brown is a great safety but his legs are full of scar tissue, the Bears have been wanting to replace him for a while now as he never can seem to stay healthy. It would not suprise me one bit if AA does very well in Chicago. He played in the Cover-2 defense under Lovie Smith in St. Louis and frankly is surrounded by a much better defense than he had with the Redskins. And he'll be playing the position he's used to. Not saying he's going to be a superstar but he's probably going to be a lot more productive than he was here. And the Bears aren't paying him that monster salary. |

I don't know how anybody can be disappointed in getting rid of this guy, especially if he was the leak from last season.
I'll third that. I think a lot of what he leaves out is the chemistry factor that stems from overpaying someone. Maybe the danny didn't want to pay him, but it's also a message to the team that you won't be the highest paid player in the nfl at your position if you don't perform up to it. I realize this goes both ways & some players may feel mgmt. is going back on its word w/AA as they did w/Lavar, but teams in the salary cap era have to cut players or ask them to take a pay cut every year. I think this was a great move & could have a huge impact on the D, all for the better. This has got me thinkin about Coles in 05. Got rid of him & the O had a much better year thereafter. This offseason is shaping up a lot like 05, few moves in free agency, dump some dead weight (AA), & get the #6 pick. Also have a young qb who started at the end of the year, though I don't want to draw any comparisons to the Ramsey situation! |

As Frank the Tank once said, "It's genius!"
I agree, I posted comments in another thread which are applicable here in this one, so I'll paste: If I can add one comment, absolutely genius move by the 'Skins. - We cleared his contract off the 08 and 09 years, which helped immensely because our cap was getting heavy in those years. - We got rid of a huge free agent mistake without taking a huge cap penalty. - We actually got a 6th round pick for someone who is a complete bum in our system. Setting up Archuleta's deal as $5 million guaranteed up front, and $5 million guaranteed one year later is what allowed us to make this move. If we had given him all $10 million up front, this move would have been impossible. Genius contract structuring by our front office, showing that they know how to plan for contingencies when going after free agents. It shows they actually put thought into what they're doing, rather than just running willy-nilly and buying up every player in sight. Bravo, Danny, bravo. |
Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
And the real coup: now we sit here with $8 million in 2007 space. We don't need $8 million for rookies.
To me this is saying loud and clear that the Dre Bly deal is going down any day now. Listen to the money talk! |
Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
Wow.
Having the Bears take his contract off our books is a huge favor. Throwing in a draft pick is a bonus. Good work, front offiice. You're forgiven for signing him. Seriously though, who could've predicted him turning from a weightroom monster to a marshmallow Peep after putting the burgandy and gold on? "Safety Adam Archuleta, a free agent bust in 2006, also isn't going anywhere barring the unlikely event of a trade with Chicago, which wanted him before he signed with Washington. Archuleta's $5 million guaranteed bonus for 2007 is due tomorrow."
See the Wash Times article on the Warpath for the link entitled "Gibbs.." This quote says it all to me. The trade seemed unlikely but they got it done. Compare this to the Coles trade in which we got Moss (an upgrade) but we ate all the cap space. For arch, we managed to get a pick plus they're picking up the 5mil tab! |

Archuleta will get a new contract with Chicago, while the Redskins are expected to land just a sixth-round pick as compensation for a player who was drafted 20th overall in 2001. Had the Redskins executed the option and kept Archuleta as a reserve (behind starters Pierson Prioleau and Sean Taylor), he would have cost them $2.4 million against the salary cap; by dealing him, he likely will count $4 million in dead cap space, pending any other possible contract restructurings, but will be off the team's books after 2007. you know I am glad to get his contract off the books after next season, but I dont understand why every one is so RA RA? It just speaks volumes in the ways of this front office. It has been very, very questionable the last 4 years. we go on and on all the time about this. We let a former 1st round pick, who we made the highest paid safety in league history, go for a 6th round pick? How bad is that. yeah yeah, preach all you want about how we dont have to pay him, but we do still have to pay him 4+ million in dead cap space. we lead the league in that every single year. GW has to be held accountable for this crap. Bailey gone, smoot gone(back now) pierce gone, clark gone, Arrington gone, mis steps with Arch, Barrow, Wright, Rumph. who is letting this guy pick these players. Everyone in the league knew Arch was not going to fit here, but GW did. Carter has yet to earn the 10mil signing bonus 30+million contract. he played well in 3, 4 games? He may turn out to be ok, but come on. its just another move and big contract that hasn't worked out. there has to be some kind of change soon if this organization is going to put up another big silver trophy at Redskin park.

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick
Archuletta should do better in Chicago than he did here in Washington not because of the coaching but because of the system. He'll get to play zone a lot more there and - assuming that Briggs actually does come back and play in Chicago - he'll have far more competent linebacking in front of him to take care of business in that part of the field without his "intervention".
Archuletta never was a cover guy - - even coming out of college. The biggest mistake came from whomever it was in the FO or coaching staff or both who thought he could work out here in a system that liked to play man coverage more than once in a while. Those are the folks at whom your wrath should be aimed. Archuletta simply signed a piece of paper that guaranteed him more money than he ever thought he was going to be offered. And then he played about the way he should have been expected to play in this system. Someone mentioned this earlier in the thread but let me reiterate it here. Archuletta was a bad free-agent move but it is nowhere near as bad as the Scott Mitchell signing in Detroit was. That was THE worst of all time... |

I agree. One thing I have noticed with the redskins is that for some reason they seem to view other teams players as better/more valuable than their own. |
