sean taylor was a sure thing
chris samuels was a sure thing
champ bailey was a sure thing

there are only a few sure things and landry is one of them, he is the second best player in this draft and best defensive player.....his knock for not being stout in the run game is listed as his only weakness, and even so hes not a pussy in the run game, he tackles extremely well. yeah he cant take on a full back but we dont need him to do things like that, we need a coverage safety more than a run stopping safety.....hell if you wanted a run stopper why get rid of archeletta. landry has put on 15 pounds since his last football game and still ran a 4.38......he is a sure thing pal.
No such thing, as an UNPROVEN at this level "SURE THING".
We don't need to waste time on LL, we have greater NEEDS. We need D line help NOW, that's where I certainly hope we will focus in the draft. This is our MOST important area to be concerned with going into this draft.

there are sure things at this level. nobody believes in that because people only report on the guys who werent. a sure thing doesnt have to go to pro bowls every year or shit like that. a sure thing is he will be a good pro player, talent wise, locker room, learning the system, being a solid starter in teh league....thats a sure thing. someone said that lavar wasnt a sure thing, well i think he went to 3 or 4 pro bowls right????? anyways i am not going to defend someone being a sure thing too much longer because i know everyone and thier underdog mentality wont agree with it, but there are sure things and there is evidence. but anywyas LARON LANDRY IS THE BEST PICK WE CAN MAKE IF WE STAY PUT, IF WE TRADE BACK HE WONT BE THERE AND WE HAVE OTHER OPTIONS.

I personally don't like the idea of going with Landry. And as much as we have OVERdiscussed this, maybe all this talk will get the Falcons believing we are gonna take him. I really don't think the skins will select landry with pick 6 but maybe all you landry supporters can hype it up enough to scare some teams!! I would love to trade down a few spots

need DL. either trade down and get carriker or okoye, or pick one of them (or possibly adams IF the scouts are sure he'll hit the weight room) if you can't find a partner.

landry or CJ would be nice, but landry isn't a big enough upgrade over prioleau to outpace the increased production from an upgrade on the DL (from terrible to good/great at one spot).

ryan leaf was a sure thing :P

doesn't always work out. CJ and peterson are far more "sure" than landry though.

landry is an upgrade over priloeau but

1. why drafting ladry makes sense: putting him with sean taylor great tandem he can blend perfectly with taylor

2. why trading down makes sense: we could get additional picks and we could colse a couple of holes versus just one

3. why taking a stud d lineman makes the MOST sense: ok our youngest starter is andre carter and he is going to be 28 when the season started our run defense was terrible and we had how many sacks ridicolous let us ask ed reed and ronde barber and even nick harper last year how good it felt to only have to cover for 3 to 5 seconds versus10 to 15 for us i think people are forgetting that it all starts in the trenches.

I've all but given up explaining to people that the defensive line is a bigger need than the secondary.

It would be like forgoing deadbolts on the front door to your house but strengthening the locks on your bedroom door.

WASUP SKINS FANS.......First I would like to thank you all for allowing me to join your site. Now on L. Landry everything Ive read about him has been positive speed. tackling & attitude but we need D-line help bad. Ive been following the available free agents and there are still a few decent Dt out there who could help strengthen our line and the front office seems to be attempting to show restraint and hopfully this will continue into the season. HAIL TO TH REDSKINS...............:goodjob:

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick

welcome zo, and beems, i love the analogy. our secondary had better be the best tacklers of all time. because if we don't fix our defensive line, there will be plenty of down field tackles available

TheMalcolmConnection 03-26-2007 10:13 AM

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick

That does make a lot of sense as well. I'd much rather have someone get stopped for a short gain, rather than have the most SURE TACKLING secondary ever after the RB has already gotten four or five yards.

What kind of burglar are you expecting?

Andre Carter is not the youngest defensive lineman, btw. Unless Golston and Montgomery are getting cut, we should see a lot more of them in the rotation this year. Regardless, we still need an infusion of youth along that line, maybe it's not imperative for the 2007 season but we are going to be hurting a lot sooner than later. In the next 2-3 years time we're probably losing Griffin, Daniels, Wynn, Salave'a due to age , money or health. The carry-overs would be Carter, Golston, Montgomery and Evans...{whimper}...

golston and montgomery don't really count since they're not starting quality linemen at this point. until they are, you've got to assume them as question marks AT BEST.

once again a great point made we NEED Defensive lineman we are getting all this "depth" at o line but not a d line and i just want to know WHY!?!?!?!?!

But if we DONT make the pick now, come 2008, we still won't be getting any return on investment from anyone but potentially Carter. It is imperative that we get a young DL guy into the "Farm system" so that come 2008, we have a 2nd year guy ready to step into the role.

I see this as a must have.

Not to beat a dead horse, but what happens if ST goes down? More reason to like the LL pick even though there's no way we'll do it.

So we should draft this guy in case Sean Taylor gets hurt?

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick

All I am saying is that should Taylor go down our starting safties would look something like PP (if he's recovered) and Omar or Fox.

We should actually draft LL because he'd most likely be the best football player available at six, and because it would be good to see him play with Sean. If we don't upgrade the saftey spot it leaves us with suprisingly little depth at that position. Image if Moss goes down. We'd be starting BL and ARE. Imagine if Griff goes down. Imagine if Samuels goes down. It's not as if saftey is the only position on the team where one player going down could have a dramatic impact on the caliber of the entire unit. That's what happens when your team has no depth.

If we're picking at six, LL is the pick. If we trade down we can address the depth issues we have across the board. With that said, please trade down and get at least fair value, or grow some balls and pick the best defensive player in the draft regardless of postion.

I agree. Branch or Okeye is looking to be our best option. There is a lot of talk about Anderson but, I LOVE OKEYE. It's been stated but he's 19 and he cant only get better. No LL.

Take Branch.
Or.
Take Okeye.

Please. For my sake Danny-boy.

drop 2-8 spots and take okoye, carriker, or adams (if convinced he'll hit the weight room).

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick

No, get Branch or Okeye for god's sake. We have been deficient at D line for far too long. Haven't had anything close to a good D line since Big Daddy and Stubblefield first came on the scene and even that didn't last too long!!! There will be nice options at DB left for us both in the draft and June 1 for sure.

Yeah, what happens if Griff goes down? What happens if Salave'a gets nicked up? Wait! That already happened last year, and we ranked #27 against the run.

Do nothing and HOPE they stay healthy and we'll be worse against the run. Then LL can show us what a great tackler he is in the secondary.

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick

Branch or Okoye definately would look good in a Redskins uniform, even better if they were picked up around the tenth spot. I too am very bored at watching our D-Line go to work, they're in pretty bad shape.

Re: Should the Redskins consider LSU Safety Laron Landry with the 6th overall pick
Even if we trade down and get more picks, I'd take another defensive lineman before addressing the secondary.

The way I see it, we need a D-tackle first, a D-end second, and maybe another cornerback after that. Either way, Landry won't be part of any scenario.
Landry is a nice pick and nobody could say he was a bad selection.

However, I believe that we've already addressed our secondary with; Rogers and Taylor as starters, the 2 other starting positions will be figured out by the performance of; Springs moving to Free Safety and Smoot regaining form and starting at the other CB.
We also have or signed...
Macklin, Prioleau (back from injury), Fox (started at S last season), Stoutmire, Jimoh, and Doughty. Some pretty nice depth, Nickle and dime packages.

How about the O line (departure of Dockery)
Resigning Wade was critical (I believe) this is an improvement over Dockery.
Nice depth and options come from signing Fabini and Tucker.

Linebackers;
The signing of Fletcher will solve this issue who will start at MLB. Washington and McIntosh will start at OLB.
Marshall is great depth and package assistance.

TE; Yoder resigned. we're set.
WR; how can anybody think this is a position of need???
RB; perfect harmony, set.
QB: set, maybe, maybe, maybe a late round hopeful or undrafted FA to hold the clipboard and develop.
FB, H back; perfectly ready.
K/P; resigned Frost! Maybe.... Carney from New Orleans comes into push SqueezHam:)
KR; set.

The only thing we need is bodies in camp to hold things...:)
and DEFENSIVE LINEMAN....

Let's DRAFT, TRADE, SIGN UNDRAFTED FA, STEAL, BORROW or CHEAT to get Defensive Lineman into Redskin Uniforms... THIS SHOULD BE OUR FOCUS AND GOAL!!!

I would recommend you carefully examine some of the positions you deem "set", because we weren't all that good last year. For example, I wouldn't say that re-signing Todd Yoder sets our TE situation. We were a horrible power/short yardage running team last year, and we need to redevelop the ability to go off tackle with some consistency.

I would completely agree with your analysis that defensive line is far and beyond the biggest need, and certainly we will address that position in the draft. The only question remaining is whether or not you take a guy like a Okoye at 6, or trade down into the lower half of the round and target Alan Branch or Justin Harrell.
