Just 4 WRs?
That's leaving things a little thin there. I don't think McCardell is a threat to Lloyd or ARE's playing time. He'll be a quality guy for depth and situational type stuff.
Thin, of course, but if you use Betts, Cooley, Cartwright, and even maybe ST's services there, you'd have a hard time convincing me that Al Saunders (or anyone else for that matter) couldn't come up with a creative way to use his personel. We'd have to have 3 receivers out at one time before we ever have to pull someone up off the practice squad. And its not like its unprecidented. We only had 4 recievers in 2005 and Gibbs used his personel masterfully. What type of personel package would we have to come up with to have Saunders sit there all like, "You know which NFL player this package needs to work? Keenan McCardell!" I'm just wondering what skill McCardell brings that makes him a valuable situational player. |
Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
A Keenan McCardell signing doesn't really excite me. It would basically admit that we really screwed up with the B Lloyd and ARE acquisitions.
Has there been any development to the possibility of trading for Aaron Schobel? |

Experience, good hands, good size, as JLC alludes to on his blog:
In 2005, though, McCardell started all 16 games, had 70 catches had nearly 1,000 yards; he caught 9 TDs and had 50 first-down catches - which is exactly the kind of thing the Skins need, someone savvy to move the chains and make catches in the high-traffic areas
 |
Experience, good hands, good size, as JLC alludes to on his blog:

Alright. Fair point by JLC. I would still think that the rare occurence of a situation in which we need McCardell over Moss is probably not enough to warrent a roster spot for McCardell, but I could at least see that. Just be poor roster management, IMO. |
Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
I would take McCardell over Toomer, but we just drafted Steve Smith and still havent found out if Sinorice Moss is the real deal.

Well, I am JJ's (Earthquake2689) girlfriend. I am a huge Giants fan but I can "put up" with the Redskins. That is pretty much it. Anything you want to know just ask me. |

You're going to love Steve Smith Ms. E. He's going to be a better pro player than Jarrett, his teammate at SC. He runs excellent routes and has exceptional speed- and doesn't drop the ball. He's a zone buster for sure. |

I already like Steve Smith, it is Toomer that I hate. What I want to know is why did we trade for Brandon Jacobs Jr. (Reuben Droughns) I wanted a speed running back that can get to the edges now we have no outside speed so 99% of our running plays will go to the inside giving tems an advantage to anticipate where we will run the ball at. This doesn't help Eli at all. I love the Giants but they are a 5-6 win team at the most, and they probably won't win any division games. (I miss Tiki Barber) |

wow, my thoughts exactly about the wins. I admire the realism. Like many here, I'm a realist by day, but Skins fans all see post season glory in the spring. |
Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
I say sign him, we need a go to guy on 3rd down and he fits the bill compaired to what we currently have. Why is most people on this forum so against bringing in proven talent. Look at Henry Ellard, Irvin Fryer (my spelling may be off here)they were at thier end but still produced descent numbers. We can always use a depth guy who can fill some voids at times (as long as we don't over pay them for thier services), keep an open mind 16 game seasons require good depth not pitty on certain players because we feel they need a pitty party to stay on the team. If they can not help us, we don't need them no matter who the player is. We need to win this year, we will worry about next year after this season is over.

Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
Does McCardell have a ring with the Redskins? Anyone? I've looked at his stats and his season starts with 1992. Was drafted 12th round by Redskins 1991. Did he dress or get the ring that season?

He was on the team on IR in 91 but still a team member so of course he did get a SB ring his first year in the league. Also, the 02 season with the bucs that made 2. Super Bowl XXXVII: McCardell leads receivers' big day |

yeah quake, my wife is a cowpoke fan, but at least she's into football, like your girl. It makes for an interesting season. We didn't speak for a while after Brunell & Moss rained on their ring of fame parade in 05, and that was just a month plus from our wedding date! |

skinsfan_nn-
Great job, great article. That's why he doesn't have any stats as a Redskin. Let's see him sign for the veteran minimum and pay us back for his 'free' superbowl ring! |
Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
Even if it is league minimum, shouldn't we use any money we have left to get a DE or DT? Granted signing McCardell would really shore up our WR corp, but if our pass rush and turnover ratio stink like last season, he won't be on the field long enough to make a difference. Even if there isn't much out there in terms of a DE or Dt, if we do get a decent player in the rotation maybe it will at least make sure we have fresh D linemen in there every down or if someone gets banged up.

Gus, I was just like you immediately after the season and leading up to the draft. I just couldn't fathom the thought that the Skins front office might not go after any D-linemen. Even after taking Landry, I thought that they'd better do nothing but take D-ends and D-tackles with every single selection left and hope that one of them would stick. I always thought it was naive to assume that we can hitch our stars on an injury-free season from Cornelius Griffin to anchor the line. I'm really holding my breath on that one. In a way, I've come to terms with the idea that we'll have to stand pat with what we have. I suppose I've bought into the idea that somehow, our improved secondary and linebacker situation will help out overall with the defense. The reality is that there aren't going to be any impact D-linemen out there at this point in the offseason -- they're just too valuable and nobody's going give those up. |
Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
I don't think it's an either or situation. If they sign McCardell, it's not going to have an effect on their ability to sign a DL if one becomes available.

Re: WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
ill say it again. just say no to Mccardell. no need for a old, slow wide out
