Can I ask you where you got those stats from? I think it would be interesting to look at.
Pro Football Prospectus 2007.
You can get it at any bookstore, but I'd be happy to give you identical metrics on any player in the league right now to save time. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Maybe this can give H.B more playing time and hopefully let startz really show what he can do plus this was Marshalls last year any way.IMO i think Marshall wasn't at all a true redskins i never see him hyped up enough to show that he was but London has and Said he always wanted to be with us.

Ive seen him play he can be a good pressuring guy but covering is another thing. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
How about Godfrey? I hope no one holds the fact that the word "God" appears in his last name against him.
4.5 yards per pass in 2006 (in a sample much smaller than Marshall).
6.1 in 2005 (ranked 59th among LBs). Pretty much an average pass defender. |

What? Marshall wasn't a true Redskin? He most definitely loved playing for this team. Whether or not things unraveled recently, I don't know. But they thought very highly of him and vice versa. He's been a quiet guy by all accounts. I've seen him in a few interviews, he just comes across as a very humble guy. |

So, on all passes where Godfrey was determined to be the defender the average was 4.5 yards? Is that what it means? |

Any word on contract details...? Still more to this story than meets the eye.......

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Come on guys. Lets look at this in a positive manner. Did anyone see Marshall try to ARM tackle over and over again against the Steelers just for them to break the tackle? Did anyone see him lead with his shoulder the one that was hurt last year? I didn't. Marshall is not young, Godfrey is a Bigger LB who is a veteran and started for SD last year. He is a one year Backup, who can also rush the passer. The coaches seem to be impressed with the Draft picks, so i'll trust their judgement. By releasing Marshall they must like Sartz who is the same size as him, but 8 years younger, I see this as a positive.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
The worst thing about this whole damn trade is that my Madden 2008 rosters are already out of date.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I'm sure someone else has already mentioned this, but...
Godfrey was said to be considering retirement before the Redskins contacted him.
(from ESPN.com) Reading that doesn't exactly put me at ease. |

From JLac:
Posted at 11:23 AM ET, 08/21/2007 Lemar Marshall Released This just in on the phone from Jason: The Redskins have released linebacker Lemar Marshall, whose production last season was affected by injuries and, consequently, had fallen somewhat out of favor with the team. Still, he was a solid special teams guy and knew how to play every linebacker position in this defense. Privately, he had worried about his role and was uncertain about his future here, but said this morning he had not asked for a trade. "I'm totally surprised," he said. We'll add more as we get it. Surprised, but GW and co very much blamed the LBs for last season--fired the coach, new MLB, start Rocky, cut Lamar, draft some new blood. We'll see! |
It's moves like this which are why we are in the position we've been in latley...I dont get this in the slightest....without this guy, we wouldnt have made the playoffs in 2005...he made some HUGE plays for us that year while STILL playing out of position......JLC's blog said that he had not requested a trade and was "totally suprised by it", and while the success of our season didnt depend on it...if any of our LB's go down (and hey look at that MW is already hurt)...this guy can jump in at any role.....
Everything you said here is why this makes no sense to me at all. Anyone know what Godfrey is gonna be paid? |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I agree 12th. Marshall, a guy who's been here and already knows the system for someone that you are hoping on not to mention a bit older than Marshall isn't that much of a brain teaser for me. Also, maybe Sartz, Blades, and the rest have turned out better than they originally thought they would be. Who knows
makes sense to me when a guy like hb blades is freaking leading the team in tackles every week, and a guy like dallas sartz is starting to show promise after coming off the hamstring injury. their wont be room for a guy like marshall. i liked the guy too but all in all this makes sense and you could see it coming ever since the preseason started, he was not even noticable in either game. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
hmmm will the eaglettes go after Lamar?
|
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I think we can look at this move positively. GW was looking for MW to put his hand on the ground this year. Randal Godfrey can now come in and fill that wish of GW if MW is hurting for a time this season. Remember the guy came from the Chargers 3-4 as a SLB meaning he has done this in the past and made it work to some effect. I like the move and it also show some belief in the younger guys we have brought in.
This gives Lemar a chance to sign with another team. which I'm sure he will. I really just hope it isn't anyone in the NFC East (which it seems we as a whole have signed a few guys from each other rosters over the years) We will be ok! Beside I've heard more than a few of you complaining about LM not tackling very well. This guy can come in and sure up the run defense some more. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Marshall was indeed released according to a AP wire story on Foxsports.com

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
This move is bad like Trotter getting the boot, but makes room for new blood. Don't know much about Godfrey though. Anybody care to enlighten me?
He was probaboly our biggest defensive playmaker in 2005, however. I mean the entire defense did a great job and he was in good position alot of times...but if you go back to 2005, he made some HUGE plays for us....
Yes he did . He has been our best cover LB the past few years . Why anyone questions his play at MLB is puzzling ,,, that would be the same as moving Taylor to CB , then blaming him for not being the next D Green . Marshall will end up in Chicago , NYG or Phily and have a nice career . I guess M Washington will get the ax next year and we will bring in J Seau . We should have atleast gottten a 6th rounder for him .

I think Marcus Washington was are best coverer he did drop like 3 -4 Ints this year and with that could have given him his first Pro-bowl (Which he should of- had 2 years ago. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
don't like the move of cutting marshall.... i do like the moe i bringing in Godfrey tho, he's a pretty solid vet... I'm also interested in seeing H.B. and Startz get alittle bit of playing time via Marcus will not be healty thruout the season nd Godfrey is old, plus a ? mark

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Honestly I haven't seen anything from Dallas Sartz. Dallas has not impressed me at all in preseason. I have no doubt in my mind that Lemar Marshall is way better than Dallas Sartz. What I don't understand is why would we get rid of Marshall, when we have guys like Matt Sinclair, and Kevin Jones on the roster that we can cut, to get Godfrey, instead. Could you imagine the depth we would have at LB if we had Randall Godfrey, and Lemar Marshall?
|
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
It was only surprising because Lemar knows the system and played fairly well for us. But, he wasn't going to start for us this year anyways. So, it wouldn't have affected our defense unless somebody got hurt. Maybe he asked to be released when he found out they are bringing in Godfrey and realized his chance of starting was very slim.
|
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Kelli Johnson on comcast made a good point that's been made before, the core skin talk doesn't seem to mean much at times. LM did a lot for the team, filled in where asked to & played hurt.
The more I think about this it sounds like it was GW's move. I hope Gibbs isn't letting his assistants decide who gets cut, but it really looks like it here. Godfrey played for GW in Tenn. I would hope that Gibbs valued LM a lot & gave this a lot of thought. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I don't have time to read all 150 posts in this thread, but I wonder if the $1M we were to pay Marshall had anything to do with it.
It is curious that we would hang on to other lesser players like Khary Campbell and Sartz and let Lemar go. He wasn't much of a MLB, but OLB pretty well. Godfrey is a solid player. I'm hoping that bringing him in isn't an indication the Marcus' injury is worse than reported. |

As for Campbell and Sartz, not only are they cheaper depth alternatives they are younger. Marshall is no spring chicken. More than money and age though, the Redskins must have seen or not seen something lately with Marshall that made them think they need someone right now. (on a side note, I kind of like this WR they signed Jerel Myers. He could be a good #5 receiver) |

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I don't like it. Why cut him now when we don't have to? What happens if Rocky blows out his acl next week against the Ravens...we will look real stupid. Just like when we cut Bramlet and JC hurts his knee the next week and Brunnel continues to look like crap.
Or another team could lose their WLB and then we could get something for him. Just like Atlanta jumping on Bramlet...surely they would have given us something for him or at least pursued Brunnel more. It just doesn't make sense to cut someone with value now. And don't give me the old 'we were be nice by letting him go early' bit. This is after all a business, as we have been repeatedly reminded. Also, how does the rest of the team react to losing one of their own for what appears to be hardly any reason. way to look out for your 'core Redskins'. Finally, I have seen Marshal make big plays for this team. Everyone else has yet to show that to me - potential or no. |

Played at LSU, most recently tearing up the AFL (not hard to do I suppose). About 5'11" 190ish. Big play type of receiver, good deep threat. His biggest strength is probably his speed after the catch. Dante Hall-esque with better size |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Let's see what Williams says about it. This was his call. He may give us some clue. My position at this point is the simplest explanation is the best: he got outplayed. This would make more sense if they had not brought in Godfrey which makes it seem like they are not completely satisfied with the play of the others.
As for the timing, I think they wanted to avoid putting him to the curb with the rest of the first cut garbage. It's a small concession to his service for the team that will be better for him. No, it's not the necessarly the savviest or most cutthroat thing they could have done. But it's not likely they would have gotten that much, if anything, for him. If you are willing to trade a guy at this point, chances are you are going to cut him at some point anyway and other teams know this. |

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Personally, I thought Marshall had value since he could play Middle and outside. I also thought that he looked pretty good in the Steelers scrimmage. I highly doubt that this was a cap move so there has to be a good reason, right!?!?
