Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
We definitely need to draft a guard on the first day this year.

I've only seen one Dallas pre-season game so far, and he was killing it. He had a bunch of pancakes, and no one was getting by him. Granted that games was against the Colts, but he looked solid. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
I don't mind the move as far as value is concerned.
I'm not crazy about the fact that they are bringing him in so late in camp. I feel like they should have known they had a hole there at that spot a while ago. The thing that bothers me is not the move but the continued lack of foresight on the part of the management team - it is actually giving me a headache as we speak. |
How old is this guy? Is he a geezer. If he is a younger FA I don't have a problem with it, but if he is a Bruce Smith type, it is just going to be a short term fix for a long term problem. WE could have acquired a G with that 5th rounder next season. ASctually we shoud have drafted a G this year.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Didn'ta. Who cares what we should have done 6 months ago? Do you have a time machine that can take us back so we can acquire a guard? The point is we thought Wade could handle the switch. It was a reasonable assumption at the time because he's a darn good athlete. But now he's banged up, and Samuels is banged up, and JC almost lost an ACL the other day. We need depth at T as well as a stronger G. It makes sense to bring in Kendall to strengthen G and allow Wade to strengthen T. It does no good to bitch and moan about what should have been done 6 months ago. All I care about is what the team is doing now to win. |

Did someone forget to pickup Fabini at the airport or something? The guy's been MIA. |

They thought he'd make a good G. Seemed reasonable at the time because he's a very good athlete. But now he's banged up and was struggling in camp. Besides, they had a G they really liked in Will Whitticker (sp?). He was mauling in camp before he tore up his knee. Can't fault them for lack of foresight here. They had a career T who has been a fantastic athlete, and they had a young prospect in Whitticker as a backup option. It's not like they didn't have a plan B. Plan A has a banged up shoulder and isn't adjusting that fast. Plan B looked good, but tore up his knee. Now they need a plan C. Better than being stubborn and trying to force Plan A. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
dockery or kendall?? i will take kendall any day of the week. docks potential far out weighs kendalls but kendall is a classic crafty veteran. he will prove to be a far better deal than dock would have been....he will help us in a position of need and i think he will play as good if not better than the dock when he was here last year....DOES HE START GAME 1??
|
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
I agree about the lack of foresight point--it was surprising to me that they thought Wade could make the shift. But I accept that Bugel and Gibbs know a bit more about OLine development than I do--not to drink the koolaid, but they do have some experience there.
And I think they were optimistic about Whitticker--plus, Samuels going down really exposed that side of the line. It was basically the worst thing that could happen, if they were trying to work in a new LG. So several things came together there. This was a necessary move AT THIS POINT. Several months ago, maybe we could have done something different, but that's hindsight. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
Suppossedly Kendall is having his physical now (5:25 PM EDT) and will return to Redskins Park tonight to sign his deal and talk to the press. (Assuming he passes the physical - Give him a good one Doc, I don't trust that Mangini)

Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
So you'd rather move forward with the disaster that is our current LG situation?
That's the problem here. The Todd Wade experiment was clearly not panning out. He's banged up and hasn't given any indication that he'll be up to starter quality by the time week one arrives. Would you rather roll with Pucillo as your starting LG? If the goal is to win football games, I'd say that's a pretty bad idea. Are we happy about giving up a draft pick to shore up LG? Of course not. But it's WAY better than the alternative, which is lose.
Schneed - you also forgot to add to your last sentence "and even worse - potentially losing your starting quarterback". I think when I look at this move I like it because the FO is trying to provide JC a line he can depend on and not worry about getting knocked out on a weekely basis - essential for a young qb. What this move does is solve 2 problems - shoring up the LG spot and also allows Wade to go back to backup tackle - his natural position. Do we think Samuels and Jansen will hold up the entire year - if not we got some insurance in Wade now. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
YES!!!!!! Finally a move that makes sense. Nobody hates trading draft picks for older players more than I do but this move was much needed. I feel sooooooo much better about our upcoming season now. This drastically changes the look of our entire o-line.
Another thing to keep in mind about trading picks for older players is that the coaching staff knows that if they don't scrape some wins together now they may not be a part of the skins' future. I also agree that if they hadn't squandered past picks we could have drafted a quality guard...but that is water under the bridge. The FO seems to assign more worth to their picks now so we should eventually be able to pull ourselves out of this hole and start doing things the RIGHT way. Can you imagine a draft where we still own all our picks? what a sweet dream. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
GOOD MOVE! I can just see JC's knee getting better...and Portis and Betts smiling.
Don't get sentimental over Marshall as when he was here he played well but no well enough to win. You have to get the players that will win now...Gibbs may not be around in 3 years to see a rookie gaurd finally play up to potential. See a need, fill a need! Where Have I heard that? I know! Some animated movie my kids watch over and over...I am getting old!!! |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
I with the group think on this one. Couldn't have made a better move given the current situation. I also agree that Buges probably couldn't have been dealt a worse hand than losing Samuels this preseason. Wade needed an anchor to his left to help guide him and teach him the position. With Heyer out there it was like the blind leading the deaf (no offense to those with hearing or sight impairments).
I wonder if they'll throw PK in there this weekend since it is Collins and not Campbell starting. Do they give PK a trial by fire so to speak or work him in slow, sit him this weekend, and let Collins potentially get blown up by the Ravens D. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
Perfect deal...we need to make sure we have the plans in place to replace HIM....but that was obviously a big need on our end...
|
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
this is a good move. 5th for a starting quality guard when it's an obvious need makes a lot of sense. too bad they didn't address it sooner, like during the last two drafts though :/
|
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
I'm a fan of this move. Now Wade can take over tackle if need be and still get in reps to improve at G.
|
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
I'm very pleased with this deal. I don't have too many concerns about the upcoming season, but this was #1 on that list. I was worried about why the Skins didn't feel the need to acquire a guard through the draft or free agency. I know they thought Wade could make the switch, but entrusting a backup tackle with a starting guard spot never sat very well with me. I love this deal. Bringing a veteran who has the ability to be a starter on this team for a second day pick is something I would do any day of the week. (However, I would not do it with every second day pick)
This team needed somebody they could trust to plug in at guard and, even if he doesn't start, he is a welcome addition. I was also concerned about quality depth on the O Line and, at the very least, Kendall will provide just that. |

So far I have ZERO complaints about "Bigg" Davis. He has been dominant up front during the preseason. The only sack surrendered by the starters so far this preseason was against Kosier, who appears to be the weak link on a very big line this season. I went to training camp for a couple of days prior to the pre-season starting and Davis really looked sharp. The move from OT to OG looks to be a good one. |
Re: THIS IS ONLY A RUMOR: KENDALL to the Redskins
Well, last year the Jets had great success running between both Guard/Tackle holes, but pretty limited success running on either side of the center.
So that doesn't tell you much. I guess it suggests that Kendall is not a weak link in the running game, but isn't a great strength either.
And keep in mind this is with Leon Washington as their leading rusher last year with 600 some yards. And Kevan Barlow right behind him at around 400. You gotta figure Portis and Betts can do more damage than that. |

Im gonna reserve judgment on this manuever until the details come out, but my gut tells me that once again the past decisions of the front office forced them to overpay for an old fart.

Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
I am excited to see how he meshes with the line in the next 2 preseason games. I think this is going to be a great pick up for a 5th round pick.

My problem is, assuming its a 5th rounder, we once again traded away a mid round pick for a 34 year old, and paid him relatively well on top of that. IF Vinny, Gibbs and the boys were on their game, O-line depth would not have been such an issue that they HAD to go out and overpay for someone well past his prime. |

I'm with you on the point of not getting ourselves into this position in the first place. How many 2nd and 3rd round picks have we pissed away over the past few years which could have helped with the transition of replacing guys like Dockery or Jon Jansen? Still, we're usually dumping 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for guys like this. I'm not too bummed out about giving up a 5th rounder here. I can live with that sort of trend. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
The last I heard the details of the trade have not been officially released. Whispers and rumors floating around have it at #5 in 2008 or a #4 in 2009. Apparently it all hinges on Kendall's playing time, which works in our favor.
Also, does anyone have info on the contract or the physical? |

Everything I've heard says 5th round pick in 2008, unless he plays something like 75% (I think that was the number) of the team's offensive snaps this year in which case it's a 4th rounder pick...but in 2009 |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
Wow! 106 for Kendall to 5 against at 10:30 p.m. Thursday night Eastern Daylight Savings Time.
That poll seems overwhelmingly for the trade. I am certainly for protecting JC at the cost of a 5/4th round DP. No, I don't think this move is anything like the TJ Duckett move, nor do I think we are cap-strapped. I watched the Steelers game three times, and of course the hit. I cringed each time, even knowing the eventual outcome, and that JC will be back next week. I only question Kendall's attitude and the pain killer problem until I see him play, and hear that he has adjusted to being in B&G. Warpath Insiders has a wonderful Q&A with Kendall up on Scout.com. I'm sorry that I don't have the link-ability with this computer. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
Here's J. Clayton's take:
The Pete Kendall trade was a fast one, put together by the Redskins and the Jets in less than 24 hours. The Jets will receive a fifth-round pick in 2008 if Kendall plays 80 percent of the snaps this year; the pick would be a fourth-rounder in '09 if he plays more. Over the past three years, Kendall has played at least 90 percent of the snaps in each of those seasons. Acquiring Kendall resolves several things along the offensive line. First, it stops the conversion of Todd Wade from tackle to guard. Wade will now be the backup tackle. Second, it gives the Redskins some beef on the interior of their offensive line. The Redskins' schedule dictates that the team can't be too small in its interior blocking. Kendall gets his money: The loser in the Kendall trade was the Miami Dolphins. They had been hoping Kendall, who didn't want to stay in New York because the Jets wouldn't give him a $1 million raise, would be cut. That wasn't going to happen. Had there been no trade offer, the Jets would have kept Kendall even if he were unhappy. Once the Redskins got involved, things started moving pretty quickly. The trade gives the Jets eight draft choices in 2008. Kendall was also a winner in the trade. Though his preference would have been to stay in New York if he got paid, Kendall proved his point. He wanted to get a raise from $1.7 million to $2.7 million, and teams were willing to accommodate him. Aside from the Redskins and Dolphins, the Chiefs also had interest. Kendall will now make $2.7 million this season and $2.3 million in 2008. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
Everyone should check out the Kendall interview at Redskins.com. He's wicked smaht. I thought Godfrey seemed like a high I.Q. guy as well, so maybe Gibbs is living up to his promise of bringing in smart, tough players.
|
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
The guy is nothing special, but he seems that way compared to what we have, which speaks volumes in itself, the fact that we didn't address the left guard position in this draft shows the lack of ability by the personel dept. to realize what we need. One of the reasons we didn't address it is because of miss use of picks from the day Gibbs returned, we will give up a fortune for skill players and forget what makes them great, and that is the offensive line. Kendall is not a bad pickup considering our need at the position, he's an average at best guard, who is 34 years old, but we should have built our line way past the likes of Kendall by now.

Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
November 4th should be interesting to watch as the announcers mention the Kendall trade 724 times each quarter. Throw in half that for the number of times they mention Fabini and Thomas also were on the Jets.
|
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
The more I think about it, the more I think it a pretty decent deal. I like the fact that Wade can go back to providing depth at tackle, and I like the fact that it means Heyer wouldn't really see the field.

Kendall is not a potential HOF candadite, that is for sure. But to get the quality lineman that you have in Kendall at this time of year is a very good bargin. When most of the new additions to teams in August are camp fodder from other teams, the Redskins have added a starter and depth for a 4th or 5th rounder. That is pretty good if you ask me. This years draft was not very deep in line talent, but the '08 draft is projected to be very deep in O-line talent. A lineman taken in the 4th or 5th round of '08 could potentially have been a second or third rounder in '07. This was a sound move by the front office. Nothing to jump up and down and call in sick for, but also nothing to hang your head about either. Just a good solid move. |
Re: KENDALL to the Redskins (confirmed)
Its too bad the skins didnt have players they drafted themselves that could step in and do the job but instead were forced to give pro bowl caliber compensation for a decent journeyman player.

Pro Bowl caliber compensation?? Honestly, where do people get this crap? So let me get this straight, because Steve McNair and Trent Green were dealt for 5th round picks, suddenly the going rate for a pro-bowl player in this league is a 5th round pick? Age has more to do with it than anything. Steve McNair and Trent Green are AT BEST average QBs in this league right now, with one foot out the door towards retirement. Pete Kendall is an average guard in this league, with one foot out the door towards retirement. They're worth the same in terms of draft picks because Kendall takes up a lot less cap space than McNair and Green do. Yeah I'd rather have a solid LG in camp back in July, but we didn't. This is making the best of a tough situation. |

Kendall was not going to be released, at least two other teams had interest, he was the best thing available, and he upgrades the line at a need position. JLC et al. can gripe that they should not have let the situation at LG deteriorate to this point, but it did and the FO worked to fix it. Sure, we'd all like to have a full compliment of draft picks, but I'd rather give up a 4th or 5th round pick if that means keeping Jason Campbell upright during the season. The comparison to the McNair and Green trades does not hold anyway as those guys were going to get cut regardless. If the Skins wanted this deal to go down they need to offer up what they did. It's not like the gave up a first day pick and not having a 4th round pick in 2009 isn't so bad as long as they can manage to hang on to their other six choices. Good move, and the only one they could really make. |
