I was watching espn and there was a report with John Clayton. He said Fassel had already approved the hiring of the OC and DC. So, he is predicting Fassel will be announced as our next HC after the SB.

It's really looking that way, isn't it?

It's strange though. Earlier this week Fassel said the redskins were toying with him. Now the media is reporting the job is his again. I think the coaching search is confusing for everyone involved.

But did Fassel himself ever say that? Either way, it's not like Fassel has a lot of leverage here. And he's made no secret over the past several months that he wants to coach again. I think he's still really bitter about the Ravens fiasco and wants redemption

I can't say that I heard him say that. However, I remember the media reporting that he had stated this. The media reports a lot of things that isn't exactly the truth.

I'm telling you watchout for Russ Grimm.

Only a coach that has never been a head coach before would agree to have the team hire the assistants first before him, unless ...IMO....one of two things is going on.

1) It's someone who has close ties to the team and will do whatever it takes (Russ Grimm)

2) It's a coach that the team knows might be unpopular but the owner wants....(Fassel)

IF Grimm gets it i would be excited...but it will be Fassel after the dust settles. I am not happy with what went down...not just that fassel is the coach (doesn"t help) but that the Skins are back to being the freaks of the NFL. Like we invented a new way of doing things...we haven't won s**t yet! Just play football and save the drama for afternoon soaps!!!

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to declare a leader anyway. This isn't a race. No one is finishing second.

Is Russ Grimm a serious option? Has anyone even spoken to him about the job? I would be happy with him but if it is him why isn't he already hired? He is in Phoenix with no ties to any team in the playoffs?

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?

I'm favoring Schwarts, as he runs the same system that Williams runs and he has been a scout as well, so he probably knows talent. He is also pretty young and if he succeeds could be a coach for us for a long time. This would be a great way for the Skins to provide stability.

BTW, I love this Scott Campbell move to Director of Player Personel. He is a very good talent evaluator and I'd love it if Snyder were to recognize that Vinnie and Scott should swap positions. Better yet, fire Vinnie and teach Campbell how to play racquetball.

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?

Cowher said he isnt going to coach, and Spagnuolo is the guy i like most otherwise. I hope the pats win so that he doesnt want to stay with the team that won the super bowl. Spagnuolo did great things with the giants d.

Greetings from a newbie.

Rather than an opinion, I have a few questions:

With Jim Zorn running the offense, are the Skins better off with Fassel (or another offense-minded coach) as opposed to Meeks, Spagnuolo or Schwartz?

Also, have I missed some news on Don Breaux, who has been holding the title of offensive coordinator? Has he been cut loose officially?

Welcome to the board. Like the user name

I don't believe Breaux has been cut loose officially, but I'm sure it's coming sooner than later.

I think that the advantage of Fassel is that he has experience running an offense so he can "guide" Zorn and give him assistance while the more experienced Blache handles the defense.

I'm upset...was Mariucci one of the names from the beginning? If not could we please be allowed to revote? lol. He fits with what DS is trying to do so far.

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?

How about Lane Kiffin? He's a young guy who probably wouldn't object to having his coordinators pre-chosen. He also is probably one of the 3 or 4 coaches in the league who's worked for an owner with a worse reputation than Snyder. His players all spoke well of him when word came out about AD asking for his resignation...

Mariucci

Cowher should not be on the list, he's not a real candidate.

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?

I think Vince Lombardi would be my pick -- of course, we will need a Ouiji board to get his play calling....

The whole "who do you want" question is difficult to answer without knowing more about what any of the candidates would be able to do in terms of personnel control, selecting assistants, etc.

What irks me about this whole coaching debacle is that we have not had any stability -- we will be on our 5th coach (not counting the brief Robiskie stint) in the 8 years that Snyder has owned the team. There is NO WAY to be successful like this. Imagine this -- let's assume in another 10 years, Danny hasn't learned his lesson about meddling and we go through another 5 coaches. Does anyone think the Redskins go to the Superbowl when faced with that kind of instability? Me neither. Now, granted, Danny was likely as surprised as any of us that Gibbs retirned without returning for the final year of his contract. But to blow it up and start over is an overraction and the mark of someone who has no concept of what it takes to build a successful sports franchise.

Williams gave us the greatest chance at stability. Now, we're starting over (again). Snyer is an impetuous child and we run the risk that he runs this franchise into the ground like Peter Angelos has done with the Baltimore Orioles.

Done my rant (for now).

:soapbox:

What makes you think Fassel is not an O coach???

I do think Jim Fassel is an offense-minded coach. Since Zorn is a 1st time coordinator, I wondered if it made more sense to have a head coach, like Fassel, whose has expertise with that facet of the game. The others who have interviewed all work the other side of the game -- and our present defensive coaching staff seems pretty experienced.

Thoughts?

Did u all see that Carroll from USC was originially an option. U would think Snyder would've learned something from the Spurrier era.

Yeah, I think you're right. I believe that was similar to the setup Fassel had for Sean Peyton when he was O-coordinator with the Giants.

The theory of Steve Mariucci seems more and more plausible though. I just think that if the job belonged to Fassel, he would have had it by now.
