I am wondering so you think he was calling the plays on the field?

No that is something I can get behind. And I never said 54 was young or old (but people certainly generally wouldn't call someone who is 54 a "spring chicken")

By the way, Joe Gibbs played football at Cerritos Junior College. Jim Zorn attended high school in Cerritos, CA. The distance between the football fields (according to Google Earth) is less that 1 mile. Hopefully there is something in the water in Cerritos.

I have no idea but people keep throwing it around as in "he has experience calling plays under center."

I think it was definately Snyders intention to hire Jim Fassel, but after witnessing the extreme backlash form his fan base he realized he had to do something different.

It was said that Snyder was impressed by what went on in Seattle as as result of our two playoff apearences there during Gibbs II. Maybe this is a classic case of "If you can't beat um, join um". I like the move though, and am interested in seeing just what else in involved as far as staff is concerned.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach

Gutsy move. I do approve of it. He is young, hungry, and wants to put in his own system. Snyder realized his screwup about hiring assistants before hiring a new HC and just made the first hired assistant the new HC. Only thing is with the West Coast, can JC adapt to another new offense relatively quick, and does this mean Collins is worthless? We need to draft a QB or two now in my opinion. It sort of stinks since we have to get linemen and some DBs also, but if JC fails or gets hurt I am not going to like our team in the hands of old QB's.

I believe this had more to do with VC not wanting Fassel

Well the best part is he has a 0-0 record so we should have a clean slate in evaluating him come opening day
That's the concern. We're talking about an owner who wants to win now because he too often still thinks like the fans who want to win now.
Not really. All owners and fans want to win now, why are we any different and we have the talent to do so. We just came off a playoff season with a large amount of injuries, with some luck on the injury front next season, a solid draft we have all the tools to win now.

Getting this coaching staff assembled is a key factor, and of course on the same page. We have maintained most of our other vital coaching staff, Buges, Blache, Smith, Gray, Byner, etc.

And Zorn signed a 5 year deal, so to me that at least shows they are willing to commit to the guy for the future. I like our chances with Zorn.

You have to give VC props for hanging it all out there. He can't hide behind a HOF to avoid taking responsibility for any mistakes. He went out and hired a QB coach and everybody who watches football is going to know exactly who is pulling the strings player-personnel wise
I believe this had more to do with VC not wanting Fassel
Maybe, but I think it was Snyder addressing how he looked like an idiot hiring assistants before a HC. I am sure VC didn't want a failed retread as HC Smooty, but Fassel was the biggest name left that had considerable HC experience. Maybe VC/Snyder also thought a young Zorn if he worked out could be a long term coach and give us the promised continuity after Gibbs left. Could be a whole bunch of angles that lead to hirng Zorn as the HC. I like the move for the latter angle about youth and continuity. If this guy can get the team behind him we could be a contender in a couple years. I think he will do much better than Spurrier(rookie year), but our '08 campaign might not be so hot as we would like. It is going to be interesting to see whoever stays in terms of our upcoming free agents. We might have some defections over the passing over of Williams and how half assed this whole search has gone.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach

Count me in on the cautiously optismistic side. While it's a big move from QB coach to Head Coach, I don't think such a think is entirely unprecedented. I could be wrong on that.

Also, it's not like Zorn is a newcomer to the Pro Game. He's been in it on a variety of levels for quite some time. I imagine we will be having a new OC with Zorn focusing on QB's and the general coaching duties.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking but a got a good vibe on this.

Yes, I think you are right. Jim Fassel would have been hired if Snyder and Cerrato could have gotten away with it, but it would have been a public relations disaster, and they knew it. Everything would have pointed back to them, and they would have born the brunt of it.

So, despite the mockery to the contrary, the fans do have a voice, and a website like this has influence because it lets the fans express that voice.

By playing their role, the fans forced Snyder and Cerrato to reconsider their options. Humbled, Snyder's better side came out and he remembered the strong impression Jim Zorn's character made on him. The same side of Snyder that was impressed by Joe Gibbs from a personal standpoint probably influenced him to choose Zorn.

While I agree with your post, the fact remains that Gibbs was.....Gibbs so there was no way Snyder was going to turn down a chance to bring him back.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach

If we could give Spurrier a chance, I certainly like Zorn's chances given that the defensivde side of the ball should be stable. Also if I'm not mistaken aren't teams with new coaches allowed to start OTA's earlier. JC and the offense will need all the extra time they can get with the new playbook JZ will clone from Seattle.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach

I am actually excited about this. The guy is clearly respected in the league and apparentlky is a good Xs and Os guy. The question of course is his leadership ability. One would have to assume snyder understands the value of leadership since having Gibbs around. If they "fell in love" with the guy then maybe they see the leadership potential.
