Comment on the alleged draft failure regarding Thomas and Kelly.

One, they've both been injured. Hard to learn and progress in the pro-game (especially in one with the WCO) if you can't take reps.

Two, given the last point, why are y'all (and of course, not all y'all), why are you ready to call them failures? My guess: You are (perhaps rightly!) suspicious of Vinny. Fine. But this year they went draft heavy as opposed to FA heavy. This is one of the down sides of going with the draft. A little patience please!

Three, Do you really want them to bring in a has-been vet cast off who might help us in the beginning of this year, but adds NOTHING to the future of this team? Now, Thomas and Kelly might be busts, but there is clearly POTENTIAL there. No potential in a vet beyond a few games this year. Is that good FO policy?

Four, I'm sorry folks, but Billy McMullin is not that good. He's not bad either, and he played well in preseason. But is there really a great upside with him? Maybe, but it's a long shot. We didn't keep him, in any event, because we had worries elsewhere. It's not McMullin vs. Thomas/Kelly. It's McMullin vs. the needs at Dline, DB, Oline, etc. Now, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see another WR on the team or even Billy McM during the year as play and health dictate. But right now, we've got other issues.

There is a saying in basketball that a player is "All-airport". It means that he is very tall and looks very athletic so when he comes into town through the airport people stare at him and think he's a great basketball player - - but he really can't play...

Billy McMullen is the football version of "All-airport"...

Any NFL team that counts on him to be a difference maker is a team going nowhere.

I'm surprised Justin Hamilton made the cut and we're keeping 5 safeties. It could be a little insurance since Landry is still ailing. He could be the next "Redskins Yo-Yo".

He had a great game against Jacksonville, this guy is big and can hit, same goes for Horton and Moore. I like what I see in all 3 of them, NFC East will have to respect our safeties, even if they can't cover as well yet, they can put a hurt on you.

I thnk there's a difference between developing players for the future and bring in players to help right away so the team an go back to the playoffs. Thomas and Kelly are great pick ups for the future and hopefully they will develop into a good wideout group our team can depend on. So for the goal of getting young receivers that can help the future of the team, this was a successful draft. To be honest, no one should have expected for Thomas and Kelly to come in and help our team deficiencies in offense and help them get back to the playoffs.

The Miami Dolphins have had an active day on the waiver wire, claiming three players who were waived yesterday.

The fact that all 10 draft picks made the roster, even with many of them not exactly shining in the preseason, was not lost on the veterans. The fact that 20 percent of the roster is occupied by these players, again, something that was talked about a bit in the lockeroom.

'It's a dirty business,' one veteran said of the fact all 10 draft picks made it. 'It's not always about football around here.'"

So - how does this mesh with other reports that this team was having great chemistry with the vets helping young guys (looked for link, I think it was a Mosely story (ESPN)). Sounds to me like its just more of JLC's sour grapes over having new guys make the team and his old stand-bys getting the ax.

I don't think anyone is calling Kelly or Thomas busts. Impossible to do so after such a short time. But given's their injuries and what little we've seen from Thomas when healthy, McMullen gives us a stop-gap player with experience in the WCO who is the big we guy we haven't had, and still don't have with Thomas struggling and Kelly unable to play. That's why I suggested PUP-ing Kelly, and keeping McMullen for a while Kelly gets healthy and Thomas gets more comfortable. McMullen is no star, but he played very well all preseason and clearly understands the offense.

the only pick that shouldn't have made it was tryon. he was worse than terrible AGAINST THIRD STRINGERS!!

everyone else showed flashes except for our WRs, which have a higher investment and will take a year :/.

I know Tryon f'ed up during the preseason, but at least he was in shape, did not miss camp, and played the entire pre-season...which cannot be said of our two rookie WRs. He's a fourth round pick that was chosen wayy too early. So the team needs to bite the bullet and develop this guy.

why bother when we can get about 50 better guys without wasting time on him? he got burnt every play, he's no good.

i dont think mcmullen is a guy who take your team to the next level but, we are only going to have 3 WRs who are going to be able to contribute for the first half of the season. thomas is going to take a while to get comfortable and kelly is out for the first 2 weeks with an injury. so that leaves us moss, randle el, and thrash. randle el is going to be playing with a brace on his hand due to a injury. so we are one serious injury during a game to have only 3 wrs. mcmullen would have just added depth and a big target in the redzone maybe. so looks like we are depending on cooley and davis to be those for us. maybe we will see alot of 2 TE formations with both cooley and davis.

I never bought into the McMullen Man-Crush. He was the leading receiver in preseason. Yet, Chicago - who is starting [I]Brandon Lloyd[/I] hasn't snapped him up. The boy doesn't have it and showed it. How many balls did he drop? More than one or two. Just like Frost, he had a past to overcome and he couldn't do it.

Well we haven't even seen whether our two rookie 2nd round WRs are any good since they were out of shape and haven't played significant time. And you could get the argument that we could've gotten a veteran instead, but that doesn't mean the team needs to give up on them.

Tyler Ecker did NOT sign to the practice squad, despite the rumors to the contrary (including the one that I myself propagated). The team has instead signed their third Devin (alongside Thomas and practice-squad O lineman Clark) in Devin Aromashodu.

Aromashodu played with the Colts last season and was in their training camp until Saturday’s cuts. He will forever be immortalized in Colts lore for catching the first Colts touchdown in new Lucas Oil Stadium, a 94-yarder from Quinn Gray. (Note that neither of those guys was immortalized enough to actually, say, make the Colts roster or anything. I’m sure the play will still live in infamy, though.)

Like departed fan-favorite Anthony Mix, Aromashodu played with Jason Campbell at Auburn, which is probably the most relevant thing about him — in fact, the two connected for a touchdown in the 2005 Sugar Bowl.

Aromashodu is the eighth and final player on the practice squad roster.

I think it was a tremendous mistake to keep Tryon on the 53 man roster. He was the one player that I thought was an automatic cut. You cannot coach size. He is too small to compete in the NFL. As much as I love Darrell Green, he would have a hard time in this day and age of big physical receivers. Darrell Green had two things that allowed him to compete. He was faster than anyone on the field and he was a fighter. He would climb the latter and fight for the ball. I haven't seen any of these qualities in Tryon.

Frost was cut when Brooks was drafted and Frost knows it. He competed his ass off but he didn't stand a chance. History was his enemy. Redskin organization and the fans remember all those shanks under pressure. The guy is unreliable and you just don't know when he is going to kick one sideways.

I'm really surprised Tryon and Richardson were kept and equally surprized Billy McMullen and Mason were not kept. The dept at wide receiver is puzzling. Obviously we will not see any four or five wide receiver sets. Devon Thomas and Malcolm Kelly have shown nothing so far. I agree with keeping them but they needed to keep an additional receiver because of the health concerns.

I never bought totally into mcmullen for one reason...he wasnt dynamic enough.
I am however am still scratching my head over only five wrs...
If kelly's injury is sooo bad, why not pup him and keep the depth? especially with a broken randle els hand? are we being lied to by the media over kelly's severity? Is it zorn lighting a fire under his butt to get back out there?

It doesn't matter because they didn't keep six wideouts, but I still don't get all the hate for McMullen. All the guy did was catch passes when he was on the field and people act as though he should have been a one-man wrecking crew.

I'm not sure what else McMullen could have done to impress. Sounds like some people just don't like him.

JLC is making it sound like this only applies to the Redskins. It's a dirty business all around the NFL. Furthermore, unless I missed it, why doesn't he mention that a lot of these veterans were once rookies themselves who knocked out other veterans. Poor job by JLC

It gets harder and harder to read JLC. Every insider post reeks of Anti-Snyder Spin. Where's the positive take, or even <gasp> objective take on the quality of the new guys? Instead, we get bile from ex-punters and demoted atheletes. Are there two sides to every story? Not from the Post as of late.

It really is getting ridiculous. We've heard people rail on the idea of using the draft more vs. free agents for years now. We finally have a deep draft and all 10 make the team and now THAT's a problem. Good grief.

I think the problem is how they performed in preseason if they even played at all. I think we could point to a few better players who got cut over a drafted rookie. Take Frost for example some would say he had experience and outperformed Brooks for that job. Brooks got the job and we really do not know how this will work out.

The Frost deal was such a joke. Yes he outperformed Brooks but it wasn't by much. Certainly not enough to justify cutting a 6th round pick for a guy who's been consistently inconsistent for us.

And the problem with this complaint is: We do know how the people the draftees were brought in to replace played. You don't want a draftee challeging your position - play well consistently. Show the team there is not a need at your position. Even then, if you're an older player and not tagged to be a starter: Beware, when it comes to depth, youth is a benefit and age a liability.

JLC's thoughts on football seem like those of someone who doesn't really understand the game or league lately :/

insisting frost would make it, saying ecker made the PS (why would he with cooley and davis and yoder already onboard... there's just no need). thirteen posts saying backup DL guys will play if the starters are still hurt (REALLY??). minor, but consistently grating.
