Placing the blame with JC is just incredibly narrow minded, but yet so typical.
So far the blame has been heaped on JC, Zorn and Cerrato.. How about we've played teams that are better and/or healthier than us the past month? Portis clearly isn't right, the OL is struggling (Jansen is past well done!) and our special teams are pathetic. But yeah, it's Campbell's fault and the team should fold. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
You do realize that in the past three games where Jason had a QB rating under 85, he faced the Cowboys' 8th ranked defense, New York's 3rd ranked defense and the Steelers' 1st ranked defense? Meanwhile, Matt Ryan faced juggernaut defenses like New Orleans' 21st ranked defense, Denver's 27th ranked defense and San Diego's 28th ranked defense. Those too, are the facts.
I realize that Jason has his flaws. However, I also realize that Jason is a decent quarterback and it's absolutely unfair to judge a guy based on a 4 game streak. But, as a Redskins fan, I realize it's par for the course to do so with a Washington QB. We've done it since Gus was backing up Shuler and we'll be doing it until we have the next Peyton Manning. Compared to most Redskins fans, Dan Snyder has the patience of Buddha himself.
Good points but Gus got around 27 games, same with Shuler. JC is a better QB than those two and on game #33. By this time next season he will be on game # 47 (if my math is right). Most NFL QB's get under 30 games to prove themselves or not. He's getting more than enough time to win and improve himself. Yet, some still want to blame eveyone else, including Danny Snyder. |

If you consider me part of this group, I am not blaming Jason Campbell; he's a serviceable QB. I am pointing out that his play has fallen off late in the season, when we needed him the most. I agree; there's a lot of blame to spread around. Portis' incredible string of 125-yard-plus games masked our average passing game, and now that the running game is tougher, the weak passing game is shining through. |

Zorn did indeed inherit a team with some issues (e.g., aging O-line, small wideouts), but he also inherited a team coming off 2 playoff appearances in 3 years. So, it's not like Zorn took over the Detroit Lions. On balance, Zorn has done a good job with the Redskins. I have a few reservations about the playcalling, but he's done just fine. As for your potshots at Campbell, please review the tape on Campbell's three throws to Kelly, Thrash and ARE that were dropped on 3rd down and killed 1/4 of our 12 drives. |

JC is good. the OL and DL are going downhill and dragging JC with them. It's very unpopular to say anything negative about the best, 'home-grown', QB we've had in almost 20 years. However, our passing game is weak, for many reasons - including JC. Teams have challenged JC to beat them when they load up on Clinton Portis. Until we get better at that, we're not going to score many points. |

Last point - Gibbs II was four years long with a .45 win/loss rate. That's the team Zorn took over. Sure there were dropped balls - the WR are guilty every game. I guess they're the only ones to blame for those. |

But Zorn has put a lot of responsibility on the receivers, and between Randle El missing the final two drives against Dallas with injury, the rain today, and the pass pressure on Campbell against Pittsburgh, every part of the pass offense failed at some point. The lack of depth is creating a paper-thin margin for error with the passing game, and it's all really hurting Campbell, who has been struggling with the basics recently. |

The guy inherited this team. He didn't even get to pick all his coaches. He didn't get to pick all the draft players. I suppose where the ball is placed for the WR has nothing to do with the drops? Tell me that Zorn told JC to throw a ball into triple coverage? Come on. Zorn has got this team to play above itself. Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
I think for 1 person to get blamed 1 person messed up but if more than one its a ratio/fraction. You want someone to blame just call it The Redskins fault. From Snyder to the fans. Fans that sell tickets away and sins of the father who built this team/coaches, sins of the contract negotiators and signing bonus penalties for players that took steps away from progress.
We do have a Redskin problem honestly ever since 1991. We need to fix this. This team/fans don't trust our identity instead we chose to acknowledge or address wants rather needs. We are not a good team. Every team rolls the dice and only 1 team can win it all. I hope our Skins leadership is more solid and planned heading into the next season. We have to use this energy to get prepared for a season that matters. Playoff contention is faint if still visibly at all. We have to grow up before the season starts to not have our chances shot down. This is when we should be reaping the seed planted in the offseason. If success amounted to how much love we cheer with sure we win but instability and uncertainty doesn't yield good results. Actually we are reaping now. Were are Redskins fan!! Disappointment is not new or over. I've been taking lumps since 1991 but I'm still here. Some mistakes as before mentioned have a side effect like it or not. This game was a distraction in itself with the Ring. Our leadership is inexperienced and the ratio is against us. SKINSFAN69 spoke of the theme, ELI is stable, was built intelligently= TOWARD A GOAL we change Jason and the team around so much the ray of hope is our defense b/c that takes heart. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
I think we will finish 9-7, and miss the playoffs. But I think you will see an improved passing offense in the final three games of the season.
The defense is close to an implosion. I know all we can talk about is the offense, but the defense, although their 8-in-the-box schemes worked vs. the run, hasn't played well at all since the Rams game. A lot of inept offenses helped us along the way, but our pass defense is falling apart. We're not a good blitzing team, and because of that, I think a lot of the blame falls at the feet of Blache, who just can't stop blitzing. I think we should go back to a zone defense. Some cover two mixed in with cover one zone under wouldn't kill us. If Blache needs to blitz, he needs to get Landry back up near the LOS. Because he (and Fletcher) are the only players on the team who can actually time up a blitz. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
I would like a new WR coach. That's about the only change I would change at this point. I don't know Hixon, and I could be completely wrong, but how many receivers have we gone through? How many have we developed? I know Snyder has paid to bring talent in, but none really have consistently produced. I like what I see in Kelly, Moss obviously is a top receiver, but maybe we could bring in a USC WR coach to work specifically with Thomas, remember he is very young and maybe needs that extra touch.
I don't know but I believe it was Zorn who said that coming in to the game they needed to score 28 to win. So with that as a gauge, the offense absolutely failed :( |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
With the way the special teams have played, I don't see any reason that James Thrash or Todd Yoder makes it on the team next year. Keeping people around for special teams value is important, but it's hard to be worse on teams than these guys have been, and Thrash is useless against 31 defenses, Detroit being the exception.

However, there's no doubt that QB is the MOST important position on the team. I blame Vinny and Danny for this situation. Top Draft picks must go the the OL and DL on a regular basis. You can't just buy your way to the top in these areas with FA. Using the FA-only strategy means keeping players past their prime (see, Bruce Smith). Until our lines improve and get younger we will never know how good the rest of the team really is. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
We can't blame Jason for all of the problems. Today we got manhandled, punched in the mouth, and had dirt kicked in our eye. After that they told "your mamma" jokes about us while eating candy they bought with our lunch money.
The Offensive line couldn't keep 4 guys from getting pressure on us. The DB's were playing decent, but kinda on their own sheet of music. LB's and D-line did a good job in the first Qtr, but got complacent after that. Our WR's were dropping balls that were tagging their chests. Our running game.....Oh wait, we didn't have one. Portis should have been pulled out of the game in the end of the 3rd. Not because of his play, but because we weren't getting anywhere with him in or out. Why risk further injury when we are not running the ball well? We were outplayed today by a better football team. We were out coached by a better coaching staff. And on top of that, I could still hear people in the stands cheering for the Giants more than I heard our "Fans" cheering for the Skins. Fuck it......I'm pissed. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
Tripp, I know you break the plays down, and have way more knowledge than I do. I mean I love your breakdowns. But, I think you are being harsh on the D. what you say may be accurate. but if our offense can't sustain drives, and leaves the D on the field for nearly a whole quarter than they are going to have breakdowns. Our O never gives the D a chance, and I think Blanche may be overcompensating because he knows that our O won't score. I think GB was so disgusted with the offense today, but had to bite his tongue.

The lion share belongs to Zorn and the receivers.[*] If you watched the game you can't help but notice has awful the play calling was. The lack of diversity in plays, the stubbornness to run the ball when there's 8 in the box. We threw down field once, once![*] There's no need to revisit the past, the discussion is about this game and this season.[*] Rookie or no rookie Zorn is expected to win. You won seven games, great! Now go and win 1, 2, 3 more games![*] If you get your hands on the ball you got to catch the rock. Eli's receivers did that all game regardless of where the ball was placed.[*] Where was Santana? Was he even in the game? Hell, where was Randle El? If they take Moss away do something to counter that and keep them honest. It's like this team is handicapped even when their best receiver is double teamed. Surely there are plays to take advantage of the double coverage.
|
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
I know that d-line will make any front five look like hell, but our front five just seem to give up. come on renaldo wynn beat the hell out of Jansen like he got his mom pregnant. And samuals seemed to not even be there either. We have to sure up the edges. Campbell got to get rid of the ball. After the ring of fame ceramony. I was ready to suit up. If you cant get up after something like that, go the hell home. Portis is a warrior. He should have never even played today. And he laid it all on the line, and for what everyone else to give up on him. Show some pride. If I were Portis I would jerk a few players up and let em know.

That is one thing they've done well.
But the blitzing is getting old. Especially on third and long when you should never, ever blitz. Because we basically allow teams to convert, and it's sad. I understand why it looks like I'm just picking a fight here, but anyone who thinks our defense is playing well right now is looking at points against and ignoring the game on the field. Today, I thought they played a pretty good game against a top offense, but giving the Giants free passing lanes by not playing to the situation is still inexcusable coaching. And as a season-long thing, there's a lot of players on the defense who are underachieving. There is another way to look at it, a more positive way: This team lost a superstar coverage safety to tragedy, quickly found a replacement, and have managed to stay respectable despite the loss of one of it's younger top talents. For that, I commend them. But either way we look at it, the perception that the defense is being victimized by the offense is 100% wrong. Both have their issues, but the offenses seem depth-based and correctable. The defensive issues look more serious, like they need Landry and Rogers to become superstars, and they need to draft a great player on the front seven to fix it. Basically, the pieces are in place on offense, and the holes need to be filled. The defense has remained solid, but has no top end talent (yet), which is a bigger issue, IMO. |

I can't figure out why, with all the veterans on this team, that the Skins can't "get up" for key games. It's something that Riggo mentioned on the post game radio show...

I don't think they are depth-based and correctable at those spots. Our RT is a major weakness for us. Jansen is consistently getting pushed back into the face of Campbell. Rabach and Randy Thomas at times have been overmatched physically in one-on-one matchups. I have no beef with Samuels, he's not pass protecting like his all-pro self but he's doing pretty darn well considering the knee. Kendall has been the best of the bunch, clearing a path in the running game rather well, a role Randy Thomas used to play for us but now seemingly does not. We never get him out in space anymore, which is either an indictment of the coaching staff or it says that Randy is slowing down. But whether it's Rabach making the line adjustments or Campbell doing it, the line is failing to pick up blitzes effectively. And when it's not a mental gaffe, one of them simply gets physically beat one on one. RT has to be our top priority entering the offseason, and G and C aren't far behind. I agree that our WR play has been miserable and is a major problem. But I don't see the offensive line being an easily correctable issue. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
What Schneed said. It's kind of scary that we will need to take a hard look at RT, RG, C and LG (Kendall is a UFA) after the season and Samuels is no spring chicken.

Obviously, Rabach is a problem, and Jansen isn't all that. But I've noticed significant improvement from this group since the Steelers debacle. Which is why I'm not going off on them right now. It's because there's nothing more to say that hasn't already been said: there's some seriously under-talented pass blockers on this OL, but there was also a cohesiveness issue early in the year that killed us against Pittsburgh, and I think that has largely been fixed since the bye week. I apply the depth-based tag, because I feel one injury could bring back the cohesiveness issues. Heyer in for Jansen seems like a lateral move, talent-wise, but if Rabach is being a weak link, we have no depth to place in for him. It's not like Samuels and Kendall aren't great lineman, it's that they are part of a unit that needed to not get financially tied down to the other three guys. It's depth based only because Samuels and Kendall could be part of something great, but get lumped in with the rest only because the guys on the right side have really sucked at times. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
And I'm not trying to say that we've had great, or even good OL production recently. Just that they've been much better of late, and that if they were the only issue, we'd be doing much, much better on offense.

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
We need standout player makers on both the OL, DT, linebacker and 2nd, 3rd receivers. We don't match up well with physical teams. a serious lack of execution. Too much system football you may be holding back the reins of possibly a player being dominate or outstanding

Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
Fwiw, my Game Charting numbers say that the No. 1 problem with the receiving corps aside from no depth and development behind ARE is that Moss is a huge part of our offense, but is generally unreliable.
I would really like to see Malcolm Kelly emerge as THE go-to target in this offense, and then we can go base 3 WR with Moss and Randle El, and Cooley dominating the middle of the field. Then all we have to do is replace Thrash on the roster in the offseason with a speed threat (Devery Henderson?), and I think most of our offensive issues are solved. I would use the draft to fix OL, but I wouldn't worry about trying to fix it all in one year. Pick one prospect we really like, and draft him, and start him from day one. I still have faith that this group can do a mediocre job in the future. Well, not you Casey Rabach, but that seems like a simple fix. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
Receiver Success Rate (5 targets min):
Antwaan Randle El (70%) Chris Cooley (62.5%) Mike Sellers (55.6%) Malcolm Kelly (50.0%) Santana Moss (49.4%) Devin Thomas (44.4%) Clinton Portis (39.3%) James Thrash (29.4%) Todd Yoder (28.6%) Ladell Betts (16.7%) The loose threshold for reliability is about 50% in this statistic. As a No. 1 WR, Moss really shouldn't be below 50%. He's still good for 9+ YPA because he's a deep threat and moves well after the catch, but the general unreliability is rubbing off on Campbell, I believe. These two are essentially tied at the hip, and it would be nice for Campbell to be able to have a different go-to guy, with Moss as an effective third down target that slips by defenses unoticed. Though this is a pipe dream for the rest of this year. |

Maybe these last few games Kelly will step up. He hasn't been on the field that much this year but I believe when he gets going it will make a huge difference. I have'nt given up on Thomas yet. I think we'll see what we've been looking for, if not this year than next. Whether it's been injuries, a learning process or whatever, we just haven't put it together yet. |
Re: What's Wrong with the Redskins?
The Skins just dont have the offensive talent now to do what Zorn wants. They have a QB thats still learning and CP is great but he's the only RB they have that can do anything. As for WRs, after Moss & Cooley there is nobody that scares defenses and the rookies appear at this point to be busts. The O line is old & creaky with no young talented replacements in sight. I hope the FO can do something to fix this but I have little confodence in them.
At the same point in his career last year as JC is this year, Eli Manning won a Super Bowl. Eli is only one year ahead of Campbell, but he is far superior. And as far as the argument that Campbell is in a new system, look at rookie Matt Ryan, who is way ahead of Campbell from a development standpoint in his first year in a new system and new league. Campbell is serviceable, but he does not look like a great QB in the making. He needs to show more leadership on the field.
You are also forgetting this same time last year that NYG fans wanted to run Eli out of NY especially after the infamous Minnesota game. He was leading the leagues in fumbles and interceptions last season. I wouldn't say Eli is light years ahead of JC. Eli was an mediocre QB on a great team that why he was able to win a superbowl and consistently take the Giants to the playoffs. Statistically JC is way ahead of Manning if your trying to compare Manning of last year to JC this year. |

Does Moss really scare anyone? To me he's just an average NFL wr or a complimentary wr who had one career year. He is what he is. |
