Disappointing to hear that they don't think Rinehart is at least ready to compete for significant playing time in 2009. Maybe I was actually wrong about him. Wouldn't that be something?!
yeah, to me that was the worst news (assuming accuracy) of the article. I wonder if he can be coached up along w/lots of work in the offseason to get him to the point that by maybe mid season when we'll need him, he'd be ready to step in for whoever is injured? Or if they seriously question his long-term ability to ever start in the nfl. Just goes to show us again how the lack of picks over the years comes back to bite us. Because they're always trading picks, the lack thereof means that the ones they have need to be starters. Little to no margin of error for each pick. |

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
Building a team takes time. We have some pieces in place but we need to keep getting younger. The team should look to accumulate as many draft picks as possible and be weary of signing any free agents that are over the age of 27. Build from the trenches outward. How do you think the Gibbs/Casserly combo won 3 titles with 3 different "veteran" quaterbacks?
I don't think we should get rid of ALL of our older players, but we should be selective and not be so damn worried about keeping together a core group for a "one last run at it" kind of thing. The Ravens, Flacons, and Dolphins all proved that if you build the lines, you can succeed (overnight) in spite of other weaknesses. IMO, we should adopt that strategy and move forward.
i agree with you 100% that we don't HAVE to be horrible next year in order to rebuild - it IS possible to succeed "overnight" but addressing the lines... but the Ravens and Dolphins both had far more draft picks last year than we do (at this time), far more salary cap space, and far more accomplished men making the decisions. I would love for us to build through the lines and have instant success, but right now, i dont think we can "count" on it. Miami and baltimore greatly improved in one year, but neither of them are playing in Tampa this sunday. Anyone who is not in our plans for 2010 and beyond, and is eating up a large chunk of salary and a roster spot should be jettisoned now. theres no reason to waste salary cap room and roster spots. Yes, we may or may not take a hit in performance in 2009 because of it. But for every old declining veteran we get rid of, it opens up another spot on our roster and/or practice squad to develop future talent. Guys like Griffin, Washington, Taylor, Thrash, Daniels, and Springs should be cut. If Springs or Griff wanted to come back at a reduced salary, i'd consider it, but it would depend on what else is out there. Kendall may be worth keeping, but in the end, he's not in the plans for 2010 so he'd be more of a stop-gap depth guy at the vet min. anything more and i'd look elsewhere. Guys like Jansen, Rabach, and ARE or Moss may stick around another year because theyre more valueable to us this year than they are cut (price v. performance v. depth), but we need to start looking for their replacements as well. |
Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
Just read JLCs new article after my previous post, so its got me thinking slightly differently.
JLC has been reporting for over a month that the team doesnt like Rinehart. I like the fact that Bugel is finally admitting that his old guys dont cut it, cut its saddening to hear that we wont really try to do anything about it. I do not understand why on earth we would try to keep Griffin without asking him to take a reduced salary. Good to know Taylor will probably be gone and likely Springs too (at least at his salary). I wouldnt mind extending Springs at a reduced annual salary (no more than 3.5M/year), moving him to FS and Landry to SS, but i think Springs would rather be a FA and sign with Dallas. The only thing I can think of to explain the FOs thinking here is if we plan on letting our defense suffer another year so we can focus in the draft soley on offensive line. That logic makes sense to a degree: -our defense was our strength last year -Its JCs contract year (and essentially the same for Zorn) and we need to get them as much help as possible on offense to see if theyre worth keeping around... I personally dont know if I agree with the strategy (assuming its their strategy). What do you guys think? |

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
I am not surprised to read that Redskin players and sources are saying Jason Taylor and Shawn Springs will NOT accept a pay cut or a contract renegotiation. This is going to make for an interesting offseason.
The Reinhardt comments are not really a surprise. He is clearly in Bugel's dog house and that fact despite all of the injuries to the OL, Reinhard was not even considered for even a few minutes of play time is very telling. This guy must be stinking it up in practice. This rookie class is not really showing signs of improvements. |

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
That JLC article was deflating:
Rinehart can't play NFL football (how could we have so grossly misjudged him??), neither Heyer or Jansen are viable starters anymore but will both be back in '09. Thomas and Kendall are both in decline with health issues and will both be back in '09. We may go after a guard who could push for a starting job but nothing fancy. Hopefully we'll draft a tackle with our first pick. Sounds like our O-line (our biggest problem) won't be fixed much at all. No mention of Rabach either. I guess he'll be around. We need a home run hitter compliment to Portis but can't afford one in free agency and are limited in draft picks. Jason Taylor may come back, but if he does it will be for an overpaid $8.5M, and it sounds like he doesn't want to be here anyway. Griffin isn't going anywhere and it doesn't sound like we'll be a player for any real FA D-line contributors. I guess the possibility of landing a Connor Barwin type in the 3rd round is cool. We desperately need help with kicking/punting, but we'll do little more than give our current bums some competition in training camp. And we're stuck at WR. It's not looking up for 2009. |

I still relish in the idea of Vinny sitting at the end of the table with everyone in the room asking with a straight face "so why did we faulter during the second half of the season." Joe Bugels getting held back, Stan Hixon's hiding under the table, Zorn's curled up in the fetal position, Blache is yelling obscenities and asking why doesn't he have the new Defensive Tackle he's been asking for the last few years, all the while Snyder is counting his money.

I wouldn't say that. Our secondary is pretty good. They couldn't trait bait Rogers if he was garbage. Our defensive line is holding up a lot better than the O and we do have younger players there ready to step up. |

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
Well maybe I'm just feeling optimistic cause i ducked out early today from the office but I actually see positives in this article.
First to dispose of the unequivocal downers: 1) Rinehart. W T F. A third round o-lineman should be ready by his 2nd year. I'd call him a bust officially and being that he came from small ball in the f'd up college divisions someone in the FO decided to take the chance on this guy... damn it! If he's not even providing depth the way Stephen "Baby Fat" Heyer could as a rookie maybe Rinehart should be dropped. Just wondering out loud. 2) Marcus and the FO, evidently, want to go separate ways. One of my favorite team personalities and a guy I thought we could cut/resign or restructure on the cheap. Oh well. On to the possitives... 1). It's great the coaches/FO recognize JJ cannot compete @ RT any longer. Like JLC said this means we probably draft one of the top 3 or 4 OTs this year. IMO that's a major upgrade to the line and therefor an overall benefit for the offense... i like it. But secondly it means JJ can compete for an interior position and I won't be surprised if he plays and does well. Jansen has struggled w/ his lateral movement mostly from what I can tell. He should be more effective on the inside w/ less "space" around him and he's still a very good run blocker. Thomas is back for sure cause of the cap, so be it, I hope JJ is our other guard unless we luck out and get a quality value starter in FA. Kendell's age and inability to practice w/ the squad should mean he's headed down the road. 2) It's good news Taylor and Springs are likely to move on (based on their greed but any reason is fine by me). It frees up a ton of cap space giving us at least some hope of FA signings. Also both players have negatives. Springs' are more obvious in terms of injuries but Taylor also has negatives as I'm not convinced he's a great fit in our system. AC does a solid job on his side, but we need help at left end. Nothing mentioned about Daniels in there which worries me. As much as I like him the age/injury factor is too big. Cutting Daniels also frees up more cap room to sign a value DE as his replacement. ... last positive to Springs refusing to restructure is it should keep Los here. Great news IMO. 3) Glad to hear Griff will be back. He was a GD warrior for us last year regardless of stats. Signing a monster tackle would be a nice luxury but doesn't count as a priority. Golston and Monty will continue to improve and Griff will be back. An upgrade at DE, which seems more likely now w/ Taylor's situation, should improve the pass rush somewhat. To sum up I see good things out of this, despite the uncertainties. Clearly we'll need to replace Marcus. I would like to see a OLB drafted in the 3rd rd but who knows if the kid would be ready to start (maybe a college ball guru could chime in as to who should be available). Otherwise the d looks to be on the '08 level for quality. London is the key, make no mistake about it, and while he'll be a year older he's still a tackling machine. After getting snubbed on the pro-bowl (again) i wouldn't be surprised if he played w/ a chip on his shoulder, and God willing he'll get the nod next year. Our secondary will be even better w/ Hall/Los and Horton/Landry. Los, Horton and Landry will all continue to improve and Hall brings a lot to the table... bet we have more INTs in '09 than we've had since Champ/Smoot were our corners. Basically, with a decent upgrade @ DE and a solid replacement for Marcus our D is on track. Offensively i just hope our new franchise tackle (fingers crossed) starts immediately and dominates. I hope Jansen fights his guts out on the interior and Thomas rebounds from a down year. I hope at least one of our young wide-outs develops into a bona fide starter by opening day. But mostly I hope Zorn/Campbell can put all the pieces together and make the offense fly. |

I think Landry's hammy was more of a problem this year than we knew about and I expect great things from him this year. I think R.Thomas feels he has something to prove and will have a better year than last year. I expect more turnovers this year as I'm sure the defense does also. This should be the defining year for Campbell. With better blocking and a year under their belts for the rookies, plus a full year in the WCO, if Campbell is going to show that he can lead this team, this year should show vast improvement over last year. true, but he could start for a lot of teams on the right side. We'll see what Philly does w/their 2 old fa tackles, if anything. Usually they let older vets walk. |
Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
Well Thomas will be here at least another 2 years due to cap reasons (unless he retires), so Rinehart could still have another season or 2 to develop and replace Thomas at RG....but all i'm hearin' is wrong wit Rinehart is that he jus needs to grow a pair...that he's never sure of himself and doesn't play with confidence.

You're pretty much right. The only reason they'd do it is for fear of being cut from the team if they don't accept one, and simultaneously for fear of having trouble obtaining anywhere near the new amount on the open market. |

Tell me more why everyone is saying that 2010 will be uncapped. Where are you getting that information? I've heard some scuttlebutt myself but nothing I would say, conclusive. |

The owners voted to opt out and void the current CBA last May, hence we are heading into the "last capped year" in 2009. There have been no significant discussions (at least no progress made) between the union and the owners since. All signs point to an end of the salary cap era. This thread has lots of info on it, including links to articles: http://www.thewarpath.net/salary-cap-central/23047-wt-goodell-leagues-cba-not-working.html And here's an article documenting the owners' unanimous vote to opt out: NFL Owners Vote to Opt Out of CBA - Pride Of Detroit |

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
Just did a cap sheet update. Should be available on the site in the next couple days.
With all the new signings and the Carter /Randle-El extensions I have us at $624K over the cap. - For the new guys, all the salaries are up to date. I don't have any bonus info for them yet but any bonuses for these guys would be negligible. - Carter's salaries were updated. They weren't high to begin with so it doesn't really affect his future cap numbers. From what I can tell he converted his $2.5M 2009 roster bonus to signing bonus (5 year proration). This saves $2M against the 2009 cap. That plus a $500K reduction in 2009 salary reduces his 2009 cap number by $2.5M similar to the article posted in the other thread. - Randle El's salaries were updated. They were a lot higher than Carter's to begin with so he took big salary decreases in 2009 and beyond. Based on the article it seems he converted $2.5M of his 2009 salary to signing bonus, for a net 2009 cap savings of $2M. I also suspect he converted his future salaries to roster bonuses in 2010 and beyond, similar to what Carter has. I don't have the bonus info yet so Randle El's future cap hits are likely higher than currently listed on my sheets. |

Didn't really want to put this in a new thread (though maybe it should be)
