For the same reason the Giants weren't interested in him?
yeah they're pretty well set, they have 6 players on the DL they'd rather have over him, if not 7 not to say he sucked |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
C'mon folks....I wouldn't complain if we kept Evans, but he was good off the bench....thats it...a rotation guy who was one dimensional, who had a decent year last year.
I think he was hyped a bit last off-season, and due to the Daniels injury and the failure of Jason Taylor, he obviously became the crowd favorite....especially because he has been with the team for a while. But why have 2 ends that can't rush the passer. Daniels is certainly better, and a better teamate....and may even be cheaper. AND he's got something to prove. I would much rather have Daniels than Evans for the next 2 years...beyond that, the only advantage is age... Also,, Who knows Evans better than anyone? The Redskins. If they didn't make any major push to get him, they obviously have other plans at end. The Skins sign who they want....they didn't sign Evans, therefore, they didn't want him at that pay rate. |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
i'm calling it, not this year but next year we will draft DaQuan Bowers out of Clemson...now he is a FREAK
|
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
maybe he was guaranteed to start there?
anyways thought that he was going to decide friday, maybe it was by friday either way, some people made this guy out to be an awesome player, he's replaceable, just up to us to do it
I have no idea what San Fran promised him. It's clear that with Taylor's departure, Evans could have easily been the guy over Rob Jackson, Chris Wilson, and Daniels if he came back. I don't think Evans is awesome, but definitely serviceable if not solid. Given the hole we have at LDE, i figured 2 years $4M was pretty reasonable. Now we have no choice but to either draft or sign a DE, whether we like it or not. |

He was a true freshman this past season. He's not eligible until the 2011 draft at the earliest. |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners

not to say he sucked
All I was trying to point out is that if the fact that we didn't have much interest in Evans is a sign of our front office being inferior to the Giants', it necessarily requires that the Giants would place some value in him. The allegation that Cerrato undervalues defensive lineman is not a new one, but Evans isn't someone we just "missed the boat on." We reportedly matched the 49ers offer to get him at a cost-effective price, and he chose them over us. No biggie. It's a free market system, he's allowed to do that. Like every player I've ever rooted for (even Lemar Marshall), I wish him nothing but success in future endeavors. |
No June 1 cuts this year. Last capped year means that there's no added cap relief for waiting until June first to cut.
I suppose there could be a flurry of activity then, but it would be purely coincidental.
Don't many players contracts still have roster bonuses that come due June 1, or were most contracts written based on an uncapped 2010. |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
Well, I felt a lot more secure about the LDE position when I mistakenly thought that Evans would sign here. For me, it's not so much that I felt good about having Evans at LDE but that I now feel very insecure about having any of the others we have under contract at that position. Well, c'est la guerre!
If Daniels is healthy now and we keep him for one more year, I think he'll do a good job. He is stout against the run and we can use some other guys as situational pass rushers. We may even pick up someone to help. |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
I think Evans felt snubbed by the franchise here. Theres no logical explaination he would leave Washington, especially now that Haynesworth is here, to go to SF.
|
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
Skins Insider said that they didn't make an offer to Evans, yet elsewhere it was reported that he was deciding between us & 49ers. To not even have offered him anything is pretty insulting IMO. He played well & filled in wherever he had to.
|
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
Maybe they know something about his injury status that we (and SF) do not know?

What injury? |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
ah, whatever. I don't see any rings on any fingers due to Evans being here so adios, amigo.
|
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
Let's have some perspective. We're talking about an average to slightly better than average DE. I doubt we'll see a significant dropoff between what he'd gives us and X player/s we use instead. I liked the guy for depth/uitlity sake and sure he could have held to starting nod for an year and been OK but even then we all know we'd be yelling for them to draft a new DE this time next year. I don't think this is all that big a deal.

I agree. Bye Demetric. The 49ers are good. haha

They have a solid team and ended 7-9. Their D is improved and could be pretty good, if they can get consistent production form a QB they could be a dangerous. |

Not exactly 49ers 7-9 (in a much weaker division) Skins 8-8 |

See what a casual glance at NFL.com will get you...facts. The Octomod and his 14 spanish american children have got my back. Now I'm back to laughing at the 49er's again. haha

Bad decision...keeping Evans should have been a priority.

I thought so too. Versatile guy, well respected in the locker room, basically a younger version of Daniels. |

I tend to agree. If for nothing else 2yrs 3.8 million is really nothing in the NFL these days. But, I'm not overly worried. Daniels will be fine for a year or two with Wilson/Jackson/Buzbee playing on passing downs. I also think with the O-lineman coming in, we are not expecting the big 4 to be there when we pick so this opens up the door for a trade down where we get one of the USC linebackers and a Tyson Jackson. We will see though. I think the FO definitely has a plan in place and Evans was just not a big part of it. |

Would have been nice to bring him back if the price was really so low, but I don't think keeping him is a priority or losing him is a huge loss

Its not a "huge" loss, but considering the number of holes we have on our team and the amount of cap space we have (allegedly 12-13M), and the fact that Evans was the best DE on the market, would have cost less than 2M/year, knows our system, has a strong work ethic, plays multiple positions, etc.... its shocking that the skins didnt even try to keep him here. |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
It would have been nice to have him back but it's not a great loss that he's gone. He's a decent run stuffing end who gets occasional pressure on the passer. Hopefully Buzbee or Jackson can develop into what he brought to the table.

There is our rant |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
Lets give our young backups: Chris Wilson, Alex Buzbee and Rob Jackson a run. We brought them in hoping they will be more than just bench warmers so lets find out. Has Daniels signed with another team? bring him back at vet min and use the rotation. Also remember Haynesworth also likes to play DE in certain situations which means we can have Monty and Griff inside with haynesworth on the left!

There is our rant
We just signed the most dominant DT in football, retained a young playmaking defensive back, brought back a top-flight offensive guard familiar at great value and yet the front office is a bunch of morons for not spending a couple of million dollars on a reserve 30 year-old linemen who drew no interest from around the league, save for one (one very average) franchise. Nice guy, and yeah $4 million is probably not much in the grand scheme of things. But it's not chump change either. We could, for example, trade down and draft say Tyson Jackson and Clint Sintim addressing both DL and linebacker needs...and we'd still probably pay the two of them next year less than what Evans would get. And we have plenty of valuable, hard-working role players (Thrash, Khary Campbell, Rock). What we need are young studs, not aging good guys. Comparing Evans to Clark is highly misleading because was a 25/26 year old starting safety for us that was developing a strong camraderie with Sean Taylor. Evans is a reserve (started more than one game in a season for the first time in his career last year) close to the other side of 30, and the addition of Haynesworth more than makes up for the loss of Evans. I like Evans and it would have been nice if he could have stayed, but to rant and rave over his loss and complain about the idiocy at Redskins Park because he's not here anymore is fracking moronic. |

There is our rant
Perhaps Spence would have to answer this, but would his opinion change at all if we found out later that Vinny was offering more for Evans (say 2/$4), and Evans opted anyway for San Francisco. Is it at all possible that maybe he just wants to play in California. I absoultely agree that 2/3.8 is a bargain for Demetric Evans, but if we tried to get him at a similar price and failed, did we really fail because we're morons? |
Re: Update: Evans Signs with Niners
Redskins DIDN'T offer nor did they make a counter offer for Evans. From the man himself. Hate to see him go. Offence is where the Skins need improvement. Younger OL and some go to receivers. 100million dollar man was a waste for one person, but with that money he should be able to play DL, LB, CB,FS,RB OL, WR, K.

i wouldn't say 2mill per for evans is a bargain... fair price, but he's a role player and only moderately productive.
