Same here... I am defintley very happy how it all worked out overall though. Thank god Sanchez was not ours.... but I still think we need to do some more to address that tackle spot... but very happy to end up with a pass rushing DE... finally. |
Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
HELLO REDSKIN FANS!!!! I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief today. Perhaps our front office is starting to get it after all. I thought the DE from Tenn was a little better than Orakpo but I'm not going to complain about this pick. Will filled a huge need and this guy sort of reminds my of James Harrison coming off the edge. My only concern is can he hold up at DE 265lbs at DE? But someone mentioned that he's got the frame to put on some weight, which I agree with. Dude looks like a tank. And is he a better fit in a 3-4? But I've got confidence in Blache and co. Our defense now looks more like one that's going to get sacks and create turnovers.
Orakpo was not seen as a 3-4 player, which worked out to our advantage b/c of the 3-4 teams ahead of us. He's been tagged as a 4-3 player, and that should fit nicely with us. And I did hear that he has the frame to put on some weight, prob in the 270s. |

If he weighs in the 270's and keeps his speed, the guy could be amazingly beastly. |
Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
Does anyone know if they are doing a presser today to introduce Orakpo? I thought I heard them say something along these lines, but I don't see anything in the Redskins website.
Hey I love the enthusiasm but slow down with all this best D-Line front crap. We have not played a down of football yet so lets just see how they start out against the G-Men. We as fans still need to remember games are won and loss on the field not paper.
That's why I said "once the chemistry was there". On paper we are certainly as talented as just about any team up front, but that doesn't always translate to on field success. Cerainly hoping we will work out any kinks VERY quickly. |

Rak-Attack? O-Sack-Po? or maybe simply, "Rak?" haha... |

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
I don't know that any real smokescreen was in play with Sanchez, in my opinion. I know that Orakpo has been their true top choice for a while, and Vinny and co. had been going around saying "He's too good. No way he drops to us." Maybe his rep as a talent evaluator scared off teams ahead of him? And I also know that we should be happy that a) we had no 2nd round pick that we may have offered to move up to get Sanchez, and b) Cerrato is one guy who wasn't as keen as others in the organization on moving up to get Sanchez, this was Zorn and Snyder driven.
Zorn wanted Sanchez, as well? |
Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
Accidentally hit "d" when I saw the thread grade the skins draft...I thought this poll was for that....outside of orapko, I was quite a bit disappointed.
We definately needed Oline youth and depth. I do like orapko...but I am concerned about his size a bit...I'd hate to have 2 small ends pushed around in the run game again. Thats what hurt us last year |

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
A few thoughts:
-The interest in Sanchez was legit, but they weren't going to trade up any higher than 8th to the Jaguars and they were relatively stingy in what they were going to give up. Plus, the deal would have had to have been coupled with a Campbell trade (or possibly someone else) for another 2nd or 3rd round pick -A bit surprised that Orakpo fell, though not entirely (I had in my mock to the Skins a couple of weeks ago). His stock seemed to be falling recently through no fault of his own really. But this was the guy Vinny has wanted for a long time. He was definitely the driving force behind this pick. At the last minute I thought they might pick Cushing (he's another guy I know they liked), but I'm glad they went with Orakpo (Matty, sorry about the Maualuga text-my USC guy was messing with me) -It is kind of funny though how we put so much focus on the dinner and private meetings they had with Sanchez, yet when a few of us pointed out the same exact stuff was happening with Orakpo...it was ignored. -As for the pick itself, I think it's a good one. The knee issues obviously are something to monitor closely, but he has the ability to do all the things we envisioned for Jason Taylor (and he's a decade younger). He'll be exciting to watch.
You know that QB isn't the same as every other position. The fact that the FO was even thinking about it kind of makes you really wonder. I'm really looking for JC and the young guys to take off this year. |

It made me wonder too, but the team never tried anything with Sanchez. Had Sanchez been there at #13, we would have traded with the Jets. I'm glad the team didn't have to trade up to get Orakpo. |

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
A...Outstanding selection. The Skins have needed a standout defensive end for years. Orakpo is a workout fanatic. The defense is much improved. I'm still a little concerned about linebacker depth, but guys like Fincher and Blades may step up.

Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
Can we not act like Orakpo and Carter are going to start across from each other at the ends? We just went through a situation like this last year.
They'll be on the field at the same time in pass rushing situations, but on first and second down, it's going to be one or the other. |

That's why they brought back Dainels and Wynn to play 1st and 2nd while Orakpo plays Strong Side, then on 3rd, Orakpo moves to DE so he can rush the passer. |

Will he be able to cover and make plays in space as we require of our LB corp? Edit: Also, how far is he from being a solid LDE...i mean both talent wise and bulk? |

Edit: Also, how far is he from being a solid LDE...i mean both talent wise and bulk?
Most teams treat LE as a different animal than RE, so as our future pass rushing stud, I think it would be a mistake to work him anywhere but RE as a rookie. I think he should split time with Carter, and I'd like to see him rush the passer from a standing position on third down. I think he could handle all the responsibilities of a linebacker in this defense. I wouldn't play him there though, at least at the beginning of the year. If we're going to be blitz happy, we might as well, but again, I'd rather have Blades on the field than Orakpo. Ultimately, defensive lineman have a high bust rate because teams tend to mishandle them, so I think the critical thing is that we develop him properly, and don't be shortsighted with him. The last time a Blache defense had the 13th overall pick, they drafted some DE named Michael Haynes. Just sayin'. Orakpo is a much more dynamic player, but he's not a sure thing if mismanaged. |
Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
I think in the preseason we'll see him lined up all over to get a feel for what he can do. I know some people are already dead set against him playing some LB, but if he can handle it why not?

HTTR
People can say what they want about the FO and the talent level of this team but after listening to Campbell after all he has gone through and now hearing Orakpo, I am proud to have these guys representing our franchise. And I'm not even including London, Chris Samuels, Andre Carter, and the list keeps going. It is a class group. |
Re: Meet the Beast: Brian Orakpo
You know, in a lot of ways I feel Orakpo and Carter are alike . . . early first round draft picks, speed rushers with strength, physical specimen, possibly lining him up at OLB, etc.
I don't mean to draw the comparison to imply that they should just keep him at end or anything. I just think it's awesome, I think with Orakpo and Haynesworth, Carter is going to have a great year. I can just see Carter getting pumped up by Orakpo's presence especially, both on the field and in the weightroom. I think it coud make for some very constructive friendly competition, and that the unit is going to be playing inspired this season, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the younger DT's improves enough with this talent around that they oust Griffin by the end of he season. I am extremely excited about finally having a solid DL . . . and with Barnes rounding out the secondary, this D is not only sick as hell, but it has some talented depth. HTTR |
