I have no problem bringing him back to be a camp body, but to think he would have a realistic chance at beating out Betts or Rock is a pipe dream.
Fair enough. I do realize the odds of Mason usurping Betts or Rock are very long. At the very least I would like for him or any of the other FA RBs pushing these guys for their jobs. I want Betts and Rock to solidly beat them out for their jobs, So in my little corner of Redskins universe I will believe we have the best person available for that position on the team. |

No now see there in lies the problem. You guys hanging out at the bar and drinking and after the half time show you guys gave up on the team knowing full well you didn't care who played the second half cause JC, Portis, ARE, Moss, Taylor, Springs, Smoot, and all your first stingers were off the field. See some of us like to look at the up and coming prospects. |

You won't get that. See Betts and Rock are the second coming of Riggo. Everyone forgets that Betts likes to fumble the ball periodically. Everyone forgets Rock likes to dance in the back field and lose yrds until he hits the 30 or 40 yrd one of the game then he's done. The only thing Rock is good for is KR. Hell he was not even PR. That's how bad he is. One duty. All he does. How many other KR's get their team to the 30 yrd line consistantly? A lot. How many times did Rock take it to the house? or past the 50? Maybe once past the 50 and maybe one td. How about Hester? |

In reality though Betts' and Rock's jobs really aren't up for grabs. So while there may be the appearance of a "competition", guys like Mason are brought in to simply carry the load in the preseason to not risk the guys that are locks to make the roster. |

Are you gonna call the Jets and Ravens FO's and tell them they need not come to work now, or should I. But see I think the problem is you didn't watch the first half when Mason was in against 2nd stringers and got stuffed. I don't know that you can get those stats, maybe so, I just remember one of the games, that Mason got his chance, and suddenly the holes weren't as big and he didn't quite have the same step. If we bring him back, great, but as was said, if you think he will surpass Bett or Rock, well, probably not. |

Completely understood. I think what we are trying to say though is we could do better then Betts and Rock. Maybe it's not Mason. Fine. But we could do a hell of a lot better then Betts and Rock. |

I am very happy with the current crop. Mason wants to come and take another shot. Fine and dandy. He is, at best, a 3rd back who doesn't run back kicks (Betts and Cartwright both do). I, for one, love Rock and like Betts. Portis, even with his shortcomings, is a prime time back. Mason can come in and sit on our practice squad this year if he wants. <sigh> Anthony Mix, Marcus Mason, all the way back to Babe Laufenburg - preseason wunderkids do not pro players make. |

But if you looked at both Balt. and the Jets it's not rocket science to see that Balt. had 2 RB's even after one went down, that's why Mason was on the PS. Then he was pulled to the Jets who were in the same predicament but put him on their active roster. Now either he sucks and they didn't know it and kept them on their teams or he was not half bad. What if Rock went down and we picked up Mason again. Does that make him good? No, but not putting him on the field cause we have Betts and Portis does that make him bad? What if Portis went down and we picked him up? I guess I was looking at him through a glass half full and liked what he brought to the table. Others who weren't concerned about the position seemed to not give a rats behind about Mason. So be it. Explain to me why we are keeping Byron Westbrook? Why did we sign him? He's had what 3 seasons on the PS and has had people like Tryon surpass him and get on the field but we are going to waste a roster spot on him this yr? |
Re: Undrafted Rookies Signed
I thought I saw that the kid, Brown I think, from Wyoming went undrafted. He sounded like a good guy to grab. Kiper liked him as a 3rd down back/returner.
Don't hate on Betts & Rock. Both are solid. I know Betts has his fumbling issues, but he still deserves more carries. Rock is vital to spec. teams & contrary to what's been posted here, he does a good job on kick returns. He always gets what he can getting north -south w/out trying to dance his way, he just lacks breakaway speed. |

Sure, but are there better options sitting out there in street clothes right now? Doubt it. We could certainly do a lot worse than Betts and Rock. I'll never get why some are so intent on pushing these guys out. |

In terms of what we pay them and how they perform, I think they are both a great value. Could we do better? Sure. There are probably several No. 2 backs out there we could get with better talent. Would we pay them more? Yup. Would their talent make up for their lack of knowledge of the system and the teammates - probably not. Betts and Rock are pretty typical back-ups. I don't think either would be a starter anywhere else (maybe Betts on a team with no RB's). Sure there's probably 3 or 4 teams with a significantly better stable - but that would be the exception not the rule. Also, who would we cut to keep a "developmental" RB? On this team, the RB's are the least of my concerns. It's a stable position with a good/very good starter and good/competent back-ups. |

See some of us like to look at the up and coming prospects.
Excuse me? Two facts you need to know: I don't watch the games at bars. And in the preseason I watch the whole game, but ESPECIALLY the second half, because I know what Portis can do but I need to learn more about the 3rd stringers. Let's go back to where this discussion started: Portis is, hands-down, the best blocking back in football. I don't say that as a homer, I say that because it is true. How about if you admit your mistake and move on? |

Claim boldly as a fact an obvious fallacy (clearly you can not be better looking than me, as I am most definitely better looking then you.)
I think he plays above his natural talent level. Smart, good kid who has probably overachieved much of his life. Still, having been around him (way back when he was in high school, granted) I think there's really something special about him. He'll go out there, work hard, and won't make mistakes.
Hey, we already have a Center who "goes out there" every week! |

Re: Undrafted Rookies Signed
Rock as a RB flat out sucks. I cannot recall the last time he busted a run of more than 5 yrds in preseason. I know he is a good KR and has saved our offense time and again with good-great field position on KR when we were behind on the scoreboard but I'd rather have Shaun Alexander (sarcasm) @ RB than Rock should CP and LB go down. I'm undecided as whether we should replace him, I hope Alderidge or Dorsey can be better or at least on par with Rock in the KR duties to justify letting him go, but if we don't have anybody better, it would be better to take the Rock even if he sole duty is KR.

Well he actually had an 80 yard run in the past preseason game with the the jets (crummey had a nice block in that one) |
Re: Undrafted Rookies Signed
At the risk of breaking up the discussion of our RBs, does anyone know the story with this WR from Oregon, Jaison Williams. His numbers aren't eye popping, but the kid is huge (the Redskins site says: Wide receiver Jaison Williams, 6-5 and 230 pounds, was a three-year starter at Oregon. He had 174 catches for 2,546 yards and 21 touchdowns in his career with the Ducks.)
Anyone familiar enough with him to comment? |

6'5" and 230 lbs? Man, if he has any speed at all and can learn to run routes and hang on to the football, he could have a future. Maybe things have come easily to him until now, and minicamp will be a wakeup call. Let's hope -- I am still not sold on last years WRs ever panning out (although I really hope they do), and we have still got to build some more depth in the WR corps after Moss and ARE. |

I found this profile on him. Jaison Williams | Oregon Scouting Report - 2009 NFL Draft Prospect

Re: Undrafted Rookies Signed
Interesting -- the scouting report had him a little shorter and a little heavier than the Redskins site. His numbers trailed off his last year, which is not encouraging. Nearly 1000 yards his sophmore year in 12 games -- pretty impressive. But it does sound like he's a project and not a lock to help our WRs. Should be interesting to follow, though.
