With the current front office structure? If so, it makes no difference.

An in season move for Shanahan definitely makes no sense at all. As for after the season, we'll see.
Actually, how many teams do not have key players that they cannot recover if they lose?
Ex. we get Haynesworth and the Titans D is?
Every team has key players that they don't want to lose. The difference w/ us is that our depth is really bad. Our #1 backup, Rinehart, plays 2 games and then is benched b/c i assume he isn't very good. If he was he'd still be in there. The guy replacing him, hasn't played in a couple years and just lost 100 lbs. Batiste may not be able to even make another roster. Also, Heyer is a starter for us and he's not starter quality.

The problem w/ all of this, is that we didn't address this in last years draft when we had 3 2nd rounders. Part of the reason, is that we had other areas of need too. The reason we had other areas of need is b/c we have been wasteful of draft picks in the last 10 years+. It's a giant snowball that gets bigger and bigger.

Check out this information that I ran accross the other day. In the last 10 years...

tal number of picks in the first 4 rounds:
Tennessee – 53 (56% of picks are in the first 4 rounds)
Philadelphia – 44 (54%)
New England – 43 (54%)
Indianapolis – 42 (52%)
Baltimore – 42 (52%)
Pittsburgh – 40 (51%)
NY Giants – 40 (54%)
Washington – 27 (43%)

# of offensive linemen drafted (OG+OT+C):
Philadelphia – 17 (21% of all picks were offensive linemen)
New England – 15 (19%)
Baltimore – 15 (19%)
Pittsburgh – 15 (19%)
Indianapolis – 14 (17%)
Tennessee – 13 (14%)
Washington – 8 (13%)
NY Giants – 8 (11%)

Czabe.com: Not Exactly A Blueprint for Winning Football

Hence, our depth isn't generally going to be as good as other teams. that's why we need a GM, an intellegent GM, here.

Unless someone like Jerry Gray suddenly becomes our permanent (and not just interim) head coach then any new head coach hired will also result in a change in the front office structure.

Will Cerrato still be part of the front office? Yeah probably. Will he have final authority? Seriously doubt it. Snyder sees Zorn's failure as Cerrato's failure as well. But he also likes Cerrato and will probably want assurances from whomever steps in that Cerrato is still part of the organization, even if it means he just sits around and makes photocopies of scouting reports.

Vinny would find a way to trade 3 of this year's photocopied reports and 2 of next year's for Jay Cutler's tissue bill.

I guess his relationship with Cerrato isn't enough to overcome the little voice in Shanahan's ear that tells him coaching for Snyder is career suicide. Cowher has also allegedly rebuffed Snyder several times. Dungy essentially made fun of Snyder on the air last week. So now, of the big names available in the offseason, we're left with Gruden and Holmgren. I think Holmgrens smart enough to reject any offer Snyder makes, so that leaves us with Gruden. If even Gruden won't work here, then we're left with hiring dumb 3rd or 4th tier assistant coaches and repeating the disaster we made with Zorn. When will the madness end?
It won't until Snyder sells.

I like your ideas. A lot. I still doubt Snyder will ever turn the team over to anyone, regardless of how proven they are or how big their reputation is. My guess is Cerrato is still here a year from now, two years from now, because it allows the tiny man to play he de facto GM game he likes so much. He'll continue to burn through coaches and players, but it makes exactly no difference who those people are because the shit show will always be the same.

Have to say, if anyone actually believes that the redskins will turn this season around. They are absolutely crazy. The redskins have the become the team that hands out victories to winless teams. I know Kansas City is glad their playing us next. Bring in Holmgren or shanahan. Whoever the coach will be, they must have complete control just as gibbs did.
I personally wouldn't coach for a team where the owner pick the assistants before the HC. I would want coach for a team that wants to win & show that from organizational standpoin. The NFL is a copycat league why aren't we copying from the successful teams. Get a stellar o-line & d-line like Eli, Peyton & Brady has win those battles first. Get a some playmakers but with your stellar line you exactly need a AP at RB & you could afford to trade a Clinton Portis and not skip a beat. Things like this for starters
I totally agree with you however as stated a few days ago ....DS had so much money tied up in the Gibbs2 era coach's he could not fire current coach's and still pay them according to their contracts and let any new HC bring in his people also and be paying them. Most likely why no one wanted the job or turned it down. Bite the bullet DS, take a loss for once and write it off on your taxes and get "Experienced" people in.

I'm done. Oh I'll watch, but I won't expect a win. The Giants beat us ...understandably. They are good. The Rams suck....we lost to them. Detroit sucks ...we lost to them. Tampa sucks we squeeked by them. Carolina sucks and we lost to them. The only other team that we might get lucky on is KC, other then that we play a bunch of good teams the rest of the yr. Our easy part has past us by and we either lost or barely beat the teams we should have won by a huge margin. Please don't get the idea this team is going to all of a sudden pull a magic trick and look like the Giants. Especially now that we are having injuries. Zorn and even the players are saying "this is us, we have to find a way to win these games." So if you think it's DS or Cerrato forget any changes....DS is making money which any business man knows if it aint broken don't fix it. If you think its the coach's, scheme, or players ...nothing is going to change. We are what we are. Unless people start getting canned.

Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)

Shanahan was the coach/GM in Denver even when some other folks held the title of GM or Player Peronnel Director or Whatever. My guess is he will want something similar in his next job - - unless it is with Washington or Dallas. He knows that he will not get final say in both jobs in either town; neither owner will allow that.

Therefore, his asking price in Dallas and/or Washington will be much higher than in other cities AND my guess is that he will require a LONG term deal just so that if either Danny Boy or Jerry Jones does want to fire him they will have a really big severance check to write.

Mike Holmgren was the GM and coach in Seattle for most of his time there; in the last year - or maybe the last two - there was a GM in place and all he did was coach. There is some reason to believe that he would be just as happy being a GM as a coach in the NFL...

If Snyder were to "step aside" I'm really hoping it's not for Shanahan. Not when it comes to player personnel decisions. Maybe he'll prove me wrong a second time around, but I was not impressed at all with his tenure in Denver.

As for Holmgren, I don't get the sense Snyder has much interest in him. Plus going from Paul Allen to Dan Snyder would be a radical change. Allen is probably the most hands off owner, arguably in all of pro sports.

Sorry, just trying to put this season behind me already. Especially since I could see us going 7-0 into the break and maybe ending up 10-6 or 11-5. Now I have to hope for 8-8. Sorry about the miscue. As bad as this season and turning out to be my alzheimers screwed me up. I know we are 2-3 and the loss's were to one good team and two shitty teams. The two wins we squeeked by bad teams. :)

Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)

I don't like the Shanahan or Holmgren ideas.

I like M.Schottenheimer and have made no bones about it but even today on the radio the discussed previous coach's and apparently said the reason Marty was let go was because DS could not get a long with him. Perhaps thats why I like him. Maybe Marty would have the balls to tell DS to back off and let him be the GM. As long as the team is winning I can't see DS complaining too much.

I just wish they could mend any fences that may have been broken and make the move. I thought Marty got canned cause he wanted more control like a GM position and DS said no and Marty left, so I wonder if he would take the job if asked? He was pretty good at evaluating talent. Would bring in great talent scouts. Could name his son B. Schottenheimer HC. Maybe make it a family affair and bring in his brother Bruce Schottenheimer as well to learn under a great defensive co-ordinator.

SBXVII:

I do not pretend to know either Marty Schottenheimer or Danny Boy. However, I do know several folks who know both of these men well.

According to those folks, Marty is VERY difficult to work with and particularly difficult in a situation where you put him in charge of something. In that scenario, his idea is that he is the only person on Earth who should be allowed to make even the most trivial deicsion about what goes on there. AND by reputation, he is not the most tactful person on the planet when it comes to telling people to stay out of his business.

According to other folks, Danny Boy thinks that his money makes him the smartest guy in the room under almost any circumstances. But according to those same folks, he's not the smartest guy in the room - - ever. And because he thinks he knows just about everything, he cannot abide people making decisions that do not involve his "approval" or "impramatur".

Admittedly, I have distilled info here to keep these descriptions brief but if you look at the two of them and imagine how those folks might work well together, you will see that it is highly unlikely. They tried it once; it didn't work; neither one is interested in burying the hatchet - - unless it is between the eyebrows of the other one.

LOL. What a visual

Never spent any time with Snyder (no substantial time at least) but I did spend a lot of time around Schottenheimer and that's pretty much a 100% accurate assessment of him. Superbly arrogant with a remarkably annoying penchant for detail. I was very impressed by him, especially by the way he came in and took charge after the Norv fiasco, but I could see how having to deal with him or work for him could drive someone crazy
