I'm hoping we get Shanahan though, man is an offensive genius. Our defense is on par as it usually is, add in a good offense, oh my lord.

Back to the good ol days!
while i'm happy about Shanahan being hired, i simply don't understand the timing. How can you hire a head coach when you already have one who's getting the ready for a MNF game?

If Shanahan is hired in any capacity, Zorn had better be fired immediately. There's simply no justification for stringing him along any more. I know Snyder needs to do whats best for the franchise long term, but there's got to be some decency displayed here. I'll be disgusted if Shanahan is hired as Team President and Zorn stays on to coach 3 games, then is fired and Shanahan becomes the head coach.
Someone mentioned in the other thread about the possibility of him being named President or something now.. and head coach later. I know that if we hire him in any capacity right now it's nothing but inevitable that he'll get the HC title eventually though.

LOL, nothing gets accomplished now as it is. LOL.
I thought I read somewhere that it was Shanahan who told Snyder (per rumors) that Allen would be a good fit. Plus it all sounds like Allen will for the most part be dealing with contractual stuff vs. player aquasition.

Shanahan was contacted back in Oct. I don't doubt that a deal was arranged in regards to him coming in at the end of the season. Plus the reports are Shanahan is trying to assemble a team of coach's or has been calling around. You don't hear that about Gruden.

Lastly I don't think the Rooney Rule states when a HC is fired that's when the interview process starts and a minority has to be interviewed. It has been reported that Dungy was contacted and he turned down the job. Rooney Rule taken care of.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Irish minorities?

I'm just hearing about it on ESPN980 myself. Someone very high up in the organization (either Snyder or Allen) is adamantly denying that Shanahan was there this morning. Frank and Thom pointed out that it really wouldnt make sense for them to meet at Redskins Park. where Zorn and the rest of the staff is preparing for the MNF game. JLC will be on shortly to pass on what he knows.

ESPN980 says that Fox has retracted their initial report as being incorrect. Shanahan was not at redskins park today. Zorn will be the coach the rest of the season. JLC is up next...

I totally agree, Zorn should be given every opprotunity without looking over his shoulder the rest of the season.... Disfunctional organizations
start looking for coaches while they stilll have one...This is crap, if they arent going to retain him...Fire him right now.....

Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins

I was leaning toward Shottenheimer, Cowher or Gruden only cause I felt we needed someone who was not going to take the crap from the players but I guess I would be happy with Shanahan. I hope he's able to bring in Kubiak with him and Alex Gibbs. Alex had the Denver OL working like a fine oiled machine. I presume he would bring in his son.

What is the other front office position that they might be looking to fill besides President? I think we can figure Shanahan will want the HC/President position. Is it the head of scouting or some other position?

I hope whoever comes in picks up better talent scouts and better positional coach's (cough, WR coach, cough).

Why? so he can sit on his sofa at home instead of sitting on the sideline collecting DS's money?

Zorn, Zorn, Zorn....why are we even worried about what Zorn thinks? He's not game planning, he's not calling plays, and he has not gotten this team in a position to play in the post season. The team is 4-9. They are out of contention. I really don't care if the team lost the last 3 games, we are out. The only thing we can do is play spoiler and check out our rookies and see what they can do for next year.

It's not like Zorn has turned this thing around or something. I think we all know Sherm Lewis fixed what Zorn could not.

Kubiac is a head coach and that wont change unless he is fired and the other guys work for him so it might be difficult to get them

Ehh I don't know about this this is a distraction, And for all those that don't think campbell will be back....I think if we win out (and their is a chance we could) San Diego will have nothing to play for that last week I'm gonna predict if Campbell puts up numbers like he did against the saints against New york this weekend he will be given a contract extension

(and I'm gonna be in SD btw for that game too)

Why Dungy over Shan?

While I like Tony Dungy, Jim Caldwell has proven b/c you win w/ Peyton Manning it doesn't mean you are necessariy mean you are the best coach in the league.

I like TD and he's a winner everywhere he's been. I guess I just don't like his god awful offenses in TB. His defense...excellent.

Seems to me, Shanahan is more of a complete coach, offense and defense. Just MO.

Re: Report: Shanahan in Talks with Redskins
I'm sorry but your post seems a bit unintelligent. Nothing in the Rooney Rule says that a minority candidate should be interviewed before a non-minority. The Rule just wants to make sure that owners interview at least one or two qualified minority candidates. Nothing in the Rule says that owners have to hire these minority candidates. And many agree that the rule at the least gives these candidates exposure in the league and/or the opportunity to go through an interview process that historically they have not gotten.

I highly doubt that in the past couple of years, a less qualified minority candidate has been hired over a qualified non-minority; or that non-minority candidates have lost opportunities because of the Rooney Rule. Also, the Rule gives teams the flexibility of bypass it if an assistant becomes a coach-in-waiting (i.e. Mora Jr. in Seattle).

For people that are "concerned" about how this affect minority candidates in regards to having these interviews when there's a clearcut candidate in mind, well they have the option to decline these interviews just like it happen in Detroit when Mooch was hired. Otherwise, I'm sure some young minority head coach or executive would see an interview as an opportunity.
Good post.

My question is would the Redskins be disrespectful enough to name Shanahan coach while Zorn is coaching with 3 games to go? Why bother playing those games and not firing Zorn on the spot since he's being replaced? Something doesn't jive with the story that it is a done deal.

I wouldn't mind if Zorn would stay on as QB coach/Campbell mentor. I doubt he's accept such a demotion, but he has done well with JC despite his overall failure.

Yes, i'd agree, he's more known for offense. But they've also had some decent defenses. I haven't looked up the stats but going purely from memory.

i would mind if he stayed as a qb coach, what has he done well with jc? jc is still jc pretty much the same through out the season, if anything improved it was after sherw lewis got here, i wouldn't really credit zorn with anything this year except terrible play calling

Shanahan would ALREADY have a top defense built for him coming into this job. Unlike in Denver, he can concentrate solely on building the offense, which is our area of need....and still have a dominant defense. I believe he should keep Blache and not change a thing on D, except to upgrade. (Carlos, add a LB to get 'Rak on DE full-time)

Campbell's game and fundamentals have improved. Zorn wouldn't be calling plays as QB coach. Zorn knows how to play the position.

doesn't mean he can coach though, i used to think zorn was gettin burned for no reason but the better we get with the less control he has i don't see any need for him

and people like to say he is a great qb coach for what he did with hassebeck, and imo hasselbeck isn't even that good now if we were talking about grooming brady, or brees it would be a different story

Shanahan is being locked up by Snyder NOW since Dallas is waiting to lose the last few games before making a decision on Wade staying or going.

Smart move by Snyder to take the Cowboys' rumored next coach away from them.

This is why they're locking up a new coach before the end of the season when it has been stated Zorn will stay the remainder of the year.

Well Sherm does not even talk to JC so I'm guessing durn the week its Zorn getting the team ready for what ever scheme they are using against the other team. I would say the only thing Zorn is doing differently now is he is just not calling the plays but like others have said not all coaches call the plays. Who was calling the plays for Gibbs before the 700 page game book came to town?

my point was simply the fact that the team is functioning a whole lot better the further away from the controls zorn is.

Gibbs was calling his own plays in 2004 and 2005, because gibbs at one time was an offensive mastermind....Jim Zorn never has been

If this is true then the one thing I do know is that Kyle Shannahan will be named the Assistant HC/OC. The Bugel situation should be an interesting one to monitor. Does he want to coach another year? If he doesn't could the team get Alex Gibbs, after all he's already an Assistant HC? Will Bugel be able to handle himself on draft day when for the first time in 100 years the Redskins spend multiple picks on OL, including early picks?
