Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Nice article, from a Denver fan. A friend of mine is a huge Denver fan and he probably has a bit of a different opinion from this article. But in the end these are fan opinions.
Still, your argument against Shanahan just leads me to believe that you don't like him personally, which is fine since you are entitled to your personal opinion and I'm not here to change your personal opinion about the guy. But your facts to support your argument are really not strong at all and some are even incorrect. Is Shanahan right for the Redskins? Only time will tell. He has experience, has coached a Superbowl winning team and has been to the playoffs many times. To me that sounds like a pretty good resume, but no one can come here and claim for certain that he is going to succeed or he is going to fail. I personally go with facts and previous record.
I agree. It's not like you land a perennial winner everyday to take over your team. I mean, how many coaches are available with just one Super Bowl win? While I like the fact that Shanahan has won two Super Bowls, it seems to me some people around here measure success and failure by that alone. Truth is it's damn hard to consistently go to the playoffs, much less win a Super Bowl. In addition to playing well, so many other things have to go right for a team to find itself in the playoffs and Super Bowl. Unless you're playing for the Pats or the Steelers, it's just damn hard to establish that winning culture. Is Tom Coughlin a good coach? Damn right. Would I rather have Shanny though, probably. All I'm saying is unless you bring in a Bill Belichick, a Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy or maybe Andy Reid, there are no guarantees. I'd probably take Shanahan and his track record over most guys in the NFL right now. He may very well come here and pull a Jon Gruden, but it's also highly unlikely he'll pull a Steve Spurrier. Like you said, only time will tell. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Well Zorn did the best he could but it did not result in wins. I like the coaching staff we have now except Zorn is not head coaching material. If Gruden or Shanahan is not the next coach let Blache or Sherm Lewis get a shot at the HC positon. Didn't Shanahan draft Maurice Claret in the 3rd round?. That was a reach pick.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
talking to a good friend of mine, who is also a big time raiders fan. he said one of Shanahan's best attributes is his game day coaching. as a coach, i dont know much about him, other then they were always competitive, as far as the playoffs

It's amazing how the first thing the anti-Shanahan crowd thinks of is that he only won one playoff game without John Elway. Nevermind those two Lombardi trophies -- they mean nothing. |
Here's the scoop from SS who texted me:
-Shanahan was not in DC today -Terms of a deal have been in place for a while now, the holdup was he didn't want Vinny in a decision making role, he doesn't want to take over during the season, and he wants to wait until after the Texans season is over to bring his son Kyle with him. -He's also waiting to see what will happen with Dallas, but his focus has shifted to the Skins now. -Skins are also interested in bringing in Doug Williams but it probably wouldn't happen until March, if it does at all. DW might not be as interested as the Skins though, thinks he may have more upside with Tampa.
Thanks for posting it Matty |

Was Shanahan in Denver when Portis was there? It will be interesting in the decision to keep Portis or not.
Well that pussy finesse offense went to the playoffs a couple of times, had a number of winning seasons, and won the Super Bowl twice.
Also, you are talking about great QBs being good regardless of the team (since you mentioned Brady), not good QBs. Brady is a great QB, Brees is a great QB, and Peyton is a great QB. Cutler is not, and most good QBs need good teams, yet you mentioned great QBs. Hell, San Diego didn't think Brees was good enough and they let him go..and well we know what happened. The same you could say about Chad Pennington...although both of these guys also had injury problems...but anyway. I am by no means saying that Cutler is great, all I was saying that maybe he would be as successful as Marshall, Schefler, and Kuper if he had stayed in Denver (and not the "maybe"), but my main point is that this draft was for the most part successful.
Exactly. And couldn't it be that Cutler's performance has suffered due to Shanahan's departure? |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
My biggest problem with Shanahan is that he's clearly more interested in coaching again then he is in winning ever again. I'd rather he go play his games somewhere else than my team.
He'll bring in Bob Slowik to be our DC, and Kyle Shanahan to be our OC, and well, we won't have much by way of a coaching staff. I don't think we'll have much of an edge over other playoff teams. But he would correct the major flaw in our rushing attack without majorly overhauling the blocking schemes, and we'd never have to worry about having crappy QB play, because I don't think Shanny would ever trade in Campbell for someone markedly worse than Campbell. I think a Mike Shanahan offense would be fun to watch, but ultimately, we'd still play most of our games on the margin, and just never be a great super bowl threat under him. I really don't think Shanahan is coming back to win another super bowl. I think he just enjoys coaching a lot. Which is fine. It's great actually. But we're only going to go as far as our talent carries us, and we don't have very many GREAT players, especially on the offensive side. We have functional talent (and youth), at times, around a pretty good quarterback, who again, isn't a guarantee to be back. A defense coached by Bob Slowik may or may not be better than a Blache coached defense (I can't imagine it would be worse), but again, Shanahan builds around the concept of comfort, rather than excellence. In other words, I can see why Danny and Shanny are a good fit.
Let me get this straight: You believe Mike Shanahan wants to coach again, but doesn't care about winning?
To clarify: I'm not saying that Shanahan doesn't want to win. I'm saying he won't do what's necessary to win, if his initial try doesn't work.
But he already knows what's necessary to win, because he's won. Your statement sounds like this is a guy who doesn't know what he's doing, is going to try something that hasn't worked before, and won't adjust if it doesn't work. But it already has worked with Shanahan. Good grief. Some people are really reaching to find a reason to hate the man. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Is Shanny is in and CP is out do we look to FA for an RB or the Draft? I still think we need to use the draft to shore up the O Line.
|
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
yes shanahan was the head coach when portis was there, and he drafted portis by the way in the second round. And just to make him look more appealing to us, he did trade portis for champ bailey and if you ask me he got the better part of that deal, cause a good running back is a lot easier to find than a shut down corner.
And I don't know what shanahan will do with portis but we have other proven backs, and a lot of running backs, even undrafed ones (mike bell of the saints now was with denver) have been able to run shanahans offense very well |

It's funny, they said the same thing about Joe Gibbs. A little known assistant that Bobby Bethard had to do a hard sell to keep Mr. Cooke from firing early in his first season. The last time I checked, Gibbs has a "B" in Canton, amazing what a little patience will do isn't it? |

Chuck Noll was 1-13, 5-9, and 6-8 in first three seasons with Pittsburgh. So yes, there is something to be said for patience with head coaches. Could it be that Zorn just needs one more year to "learn" how to be a head coach? Maybe. But are we willing to wait for his on-the-job-training to be complete? In this day and age, with the league structured the way it currently is, I just don't think you can do that. Whether we're a team that needs to be blown up and rebuilt from the foundation up, or if we're a team on the verge that's just a player or two away, there needs to be a coach here with experience, and a track record of sustained success. I just don't think you can afford to bring Zorn back and hope that he's the guy who can do that. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Thanks for texting that in Smoot. So what are the chances shanahan is our next coach?
It sounds like nothing will happen until the seasons over. Three weeks is a long time for something bad to happen and screw everything up - like Dallas firing wade Phillips. Dallas worries me - franchise qb, good young running backs... And Shanahan allegedly would rather coach there. And if things do fall through, what's snyders plan b? |

However , in Zorn's case management knew what they were getting. It's not like they brought in a coach with a fancy resume and handed him a team that was on the cusp of winning a championship. It's like sending a PCP to perform open heart surgery and the patient dies on the operating table......then blaming the PCP because the patient died. I said that because IMO the hiring of Zorn was a situation where you knew going in that patience was going to be required if you have any intention of seeing what the eventual finished product is going to be. But it's as you say, the way the league is constructed today where coaches are concerned, patience is a lost virture, it has come to win now at all cost and I'm not so sure in all cases that should be a mandated expectation. Remember, the more things change, the more they stay the same. You do express an interesting point of view however. |

In his latter years in Denver it seemed clear to me that he had lost his competitive fire and I'm not sure a year off will stoke it at his age. He will bring many positives to the table, to be sure. But I think that we'll end up being like his later Broncos teams: playoff contenders in good years, mediocre in bad years, but never really contending for a Lombardi. |

So I'm so sure it's a gimme that Portis is staying just because Shanny is coming here.
Agreed, but Shanahan has consistently shown the ability to get high performance from relatively low profile backs. He traded Portis 5 years ago because he was confident that he could maintain success in the running game while getting the maximum value for Portis to shore up his defense. I think Portis stays precisely BECAUSE he's not the Portis from 5 years ago, and his trade value is slightly lower than his value to the Redskins as their primary running back. If I'm Shanahan, I might as well work with somebody who is a known quantity, somebody who I might be able to motivate to get more involved in practice. Portis' mental algorithm that decided whether he practiced or not probably was based on risk-vs.-reward, which not only takes into account the state of his body, but the state of the team as well. All the up-and-comers behind Portis obviously had more to gain and less to risk by going all-out in practice. With a fresh start under Shanahan, the equation in Portis' brain changes a little. I actually can't blame Portis for sitting out, even before the concussion. The Redskins weren't a team worth risking your health for. Period. From what we've learned, Bruce Allen was hired because Shanahan wanted him. He's a GM who admittedly is more of a contracts kind of guy rather than an evaluator of personnel. Just because he doesn't like people who don't practice every day doesn't mean he has any power to do something about it. He's a contracts guy, which is perfect. 2010 is going to be exciting, and not in the "this-year-might-be-our-year" kind of way. Don't forget that the salary cap may be coming off in 2010. Doesn't make too much of a difference for the 2010 season itself, but I'm now looking down the road. With our team's value and revenues, we may not be the NY Yankees of the NFL (Dallas), but the Boston Red Sox are definitely an appropriate comparison. |

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
On NFL Sunday (Saturday) Countdown Mort said Shanahan is coming but it's not a done deal until after the season. Also, he said that last night Rich Gannon said that Allen told him that Kyle Shanahan is coming also. I think that's borderline tampering but it's heresay. Either way, the Texans were the #3 offense last year and are #8 this year (#10 in scoring) with Kyle as the OC.

by all reports, the only reason allen got the job is because Shanahan wanted him. so things will get REALLY interesting if Shanahan goes to Dallass. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
At this point, there is no doubt Mike Shanahan will be our next coach. The real questions will come in the offseason..namely questions about our current players. Does Campbell stay or go? Clinton Portis? Santana Moss? Who does Shanahan bring in for the defense or does he keep GB and company in place? At least something Snyder is doing right this time is getting a GM/VP that has been successful in the NFL and a coach (hopefully if true) likewise.
I still think Jim Zorn is going to be a successful coach in this league but this was not the right avenue (obviously) for him to take in order to get a head coaching job. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Shanahan prefers Dallas and is waiting to see what happens there before signing here. It is by no means a done deal.
if the skins do get shanny does that help or hurt clintons chances of remaining on the team? under shanny clinton was awesome but he was also traded away by shanny.
Shanahan knows something that most fans (and even a few NFL franchises) don't understand. Build a good O-line, design a good scheme that makes holes and pick any decent running back; they will do good. Don't pay them crazy money, don't be afraid to bench one even if he's running well and don't be afraid to trade one for a commodity that is ACTUALLY extremely rare and valuable (a shut down corner) I think with a few exceptions (such as a Sanders, a Bo Jackson, a Sweetness, a Jim Brown) and Portis isn't one of those, that good running backs grow on trees... Don't agree? look as Mendenhall and Parker before him (They are sitting Parker now so he knows why he wont get a huge contract; and why should he if a rookie can run as well?)... Look at Shanahan post Portis (there's enough grist for the mill just with Shanahan for the last few years)... Now look at Knowshon Moreano; Corell Buckhalter looks just as good in the same system... They often split carries. In fact any number of teams that have had injuries or running back committees... Jamal Lewis replaced by Harrison and then Jennings for the Browns in the last game, all ran well... Glen Coffee ran just as well as Gore when he was injured in San Fran... Hell Portis then Betts then Cartwright, then Ganther ... I could go on. Good Running backs grow on trees, and shouldn't be overpaid for. They definitely shouldn't be skipping practices, skipping pre-season and otherwise being exempt from the rules the rest of the team has to follow due to a ridiculous guaranteed contract and buddy buddy status with the owner... |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Marty was 8-8. Zorn has won 4 games this season. it might be good enough for you. but i want more
Just like I heard people saying JGibbs1 started out bad, and the owner stayed with him and he won a few SB's for us. I loved the comparison when I heard it cause in reality there's no comparison. ....JGibbs1 went 0-5 re-evaluated his scheme and changed it to work with the players he had. That's the mark of a great HC. He ended 8-8. The following year he had a better season he didn't get worse. Zorn went 6-2 and then went 2-6 to end up 8-8. He got worse the second half of the year. Most likely due to injuries. If so one would think come this season with everyone healthy he starts out great but we didn't. He got worse. It took Sherm Lewis to come in and fix what Zorn could not over a 16 game span. I took Sherm Lewis 3 games to get the Skins scoring over 30 points. If Zorn stays he needs to go back to what he does best....coach QB's. Will he take a demotion? I'm betting not. I would love for him to stay, take the demotion, and keep his pay he has now since we will be paying him anyway unless he resigns. Speaking of because he is still under contract for one more year could DS tell Zorn he is demoting him to QB coach? I would imagine Zorn would say no way and resign but if he didn't we would have a good QB coach. I personally think Holmgren is going to take the Browns job and probably take Zorn with him in some type of capacity to help train him for he future. Just my personal feeling. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I get the impression this is not about firing Zorn...now, but locking up Shanny NOW, as he is a pretty hot commodity
I agree. I think Zorn should get another year with a working offensive line and david and cooley in at the same time. BUT, if Shanahan is willing to come on now then a proven coach is always better than an unproven one. However, as Zorn has proven to be a true man working through a very hard situation - I would suggest that Zorn stay on as offensive coordinator/QB coach with shanahan as head coach and play caller. I think Zorn is a proven QB coach and ready for the step as offensive coordinator - which is a promotion. Zorn only got the job because the real coaches available refused to work with Vinny. Keeping Zorn and Campell and the Z-man West coast in place and having Shanahan come in and add his wrinkles would be a good move. My question is - one: can Shanahan win without Elway and 2: all those 4th quarter comebacks - you know the air is thinner in mile high so teams not accustomed to the low oxygen got tired faster. Shanahan won't have that in DC. I also wonder what happens to portis? he has a history with Shanahan... |
