Re: Coaching Staff update
This is not good for us. It sounds like Houston either fired or let Alex Gibbs go and Seattle picked him up. :(
Another person wrote that a former Bronco fan mentioned M.Shanahan fired A.Gibbs son while in Denver and Gibbs has not talked to M.Shanahan since. Alex Gibbs leaves Houston and goes to......Seattle?!? - EXTREMESKINS.com |

NFL.com Blogs » Blog Archive Bengals retain defensive coordinator Zimmer «
Not really. While I was innitialy intrigued by Zimmer, the more I read about his track record the more unimpressed I was. He had one great year in Dallas and that's pretty much it. There are much better options out there. Romeo Crennel is by far the best choice in my opinion, but I don't think we're interested. Haslett's a possibility , but I think we end up promoting Jerry Gray. At this point, it appears to be the lesser of two evils that Shanahan seems to be considering and one I would begrudgingly accept. |

Some more bad news or good I don't know....
JLC [Twitter]: Zimmer re-signs with Bengals, Haslett will be new DC? - EXTREMESKINS.com Apparently Zimmer resigned with Cinci. Maybe it's Haslett's time. 3-4 here we come. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
For those of you who want Haslett, consider this:
Redskins Insider - Your daily source for news and commentary on the Washington Redskins, by Jason Reid
As for Haslett, his most recent NFL defenses haven't been ranked particularly high, but few in NFL circles are going to question Haslett's defensive expertise. As interim coach in St. Louis in 2008, the Rams finished ranked 28th overall. In his six years in New Orleans, the Saints' defenses were ranked eighth, 16th, 27th, 18th, 32nd and 14th.
That's an average position of 19th. Why on earth would we want that? |

Redskins Insider - Your daily source for news and commentary on the Washington Redskins, by Jason Reid
Yeah I went looking at both Zimmer and Haslett's record and was not impressed with them either. If I was Shanahan I'd push fast and hard for Romeo Crennell. Although it sounds like it's almost a done deal in KC. I think he's trying to get back with coach's he worked with in New England in hopes the chemistry is right. Who else is out there? I keep hearing about coach's that might get the axe that we might be able to use. People have said Wade Phillips, Jack Del Rio, but who is out there that is not coaching? I'll take them if they are 70yrs old. Unless we go after someone like a Gray (whome I'd rather just get away from) who is an Asst. to a DC. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Apparently DeWayne Walker might be joining Carroll in Seattle as well. Interesting on Zimmer, I thought he would be considered for a head coaching job somewhere. But the options are limited.
I guess Slowik is still a possibility for D-Coordinator, and Jeff Jagodzinski for OL |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Ironically Gray seems like the best option right now. Which begs the question, how similar were the defenses under Williams and Blache?

Re: Coaching Staff update
I wouldn't mind us shocking everyone and going with Kirk Olivadotti...he doesn't really have the credentials though.
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
I bet in the end it ends up being Slowik at this point.
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
I think he's always been the safe fall-back
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
Jim Mora Jr. is out there also and by the way.
Alex Gibbs to join Carroll And if there was any thought that Shanahan might be bringing long-time assistant Alex Gibbs with him to Washington, you can forget about it. ESPN is reporting that Gibbs, most recently the assistant head coach of offense in Houston, will be joining Pete Carroll's staff in Seattle. Gibbs is considered to be the guru behind the zone-blocking scheme that has given Shanahan so much success over the years. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
I didn't think about Mora Jr. I wouldnt want him for the sole fact that he could leave for a head coaching job at the college or possibly even pro level at any given moment.
Gray appears to be the best bet for us at the moment. At the very least, we wouldn't have to go through the growing pains of switching to a 3-4 and it would allow time for his eventual on-staff replacement (probably Olivadotti) to develop so he could step in when Gray eventually lands a head coaching gig. |

Re: Coaching Staff update
I really hope a 3-4 isn't the outcome of whoever they pick.
Maybe just because I'm resistant to change & want to see tradition maintained, but also because we're lacking LBs & we have DTs that have never played true nose tackle, though I know one side of the line is quite similar to that. |

Re: Coaching Staff update
This is how a Jim Haslett-run defense (as DC) have fared:
1996 New Orleans #20 1997 Pittsburgh #11 1998 Pittsburgh #7 1999 Pittsburgh #12 Given how some good DCs have not done such a good job as HCs (i.e. Grilliams, Spags) this may be a better way to determine how well Haslett can be as a DC. |

Actually the years that I posted there (1996-1999) were the years when Haslett was defensive coordinator (and the rankings his defense got each of those years). |

I thought he was DC in NO in 1996 and was DC in Pittsburgh from 1997-99 |

I get what you're saying if you're combining the three years together, one in NO & two in Pitts. My bad, I understand what you mean. |

Hasslet doesn't have a good track record since being a D-Coordinator for Pittsburgh in the 90's. Maybe he had bad personel in St. Louis but Gray has overseen a top defensive unit more recently then Hasslet did. If he plays an attacking style of defense and is willing to use Haynesworth properly then I say we go for it. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Go with Gray or Romeo...
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
If Gray brings a new philosophy in than great. If he tries to plug guys into roles they don't fit into because he won't build a scheme around what he has, I will vomit, loudly.

I guess I wouldn't mind Romeo or Haslett coming in here and implementing a 3-4/4-3 hybrid defense like the one the cardinals had the year they went to the super bowl.

Re: Coaching Staff update
Interesting that we - so far - don't see MS/BA throwing money around to get the people they supposedly want, I wonder if it's patience, or just not settled on who they want, or if they can't for some reason attract them. I know it's only been a few days, but certainly the old style was to get them in as quickly as they could and offer a bunch of cash.

I thought he gave himself 2 weeks, I didn't realize he was trying to have it complete by tomorrow. I would think we ought to see a DC named soon then. |
