Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
this is interesting
Redskins will use Alexander at outside LB in 3-4 scheme In another sign the Redskins plan to shift to a 3-4 defense, versatile defensive lineman Lorenzo Alexander will add outside linebacker to his duties next season, two people familiar with the situation said during the scouting combine at Indianapolis. Although Coach Mike Shanahan has been noncommittal about his plans for the team, including the defensive scheme he plans to run, several league sources said the Redskins are laying the groundwork for the shift from a base 4-3 front to a base 3-4. Some within the organization have privately raised concerns about Shanahan's plan, citing apparent personnel problems to making such a switch. Adding Alexander to the linebacker corps, even on a part-time basis, is among many moves that could help in the transition process. Alexander played a key role on offense, defense and special teams during the Redskins' late-season run to a playoff berth in 2007. In 2008, he was an effective pass-rush specialist as a defensive tackle. And with his role expanded on defense last season, Alexander was credited with 23 tackles, including 18 unassisted, two sacks and a forced fumble. Alexander is among the team's restricted free agents. The Redskins hope to reach an agreement on a multiyear extension with Alexander, sources said at the combine. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
That is interesting, dude was just an offensive guard a couple of years ago.
I'd heard about Jarmon lining up at OLB but not Alexander. Not sure what to make of that |

Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
He was actually a very ineffective offensive player in 2007 and 2008. So that's one thing he can't do.

Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Lets add Marshall Newhouse to the list of guys who could be good in shanny's offense. The guy was a top performer in the 3 cone drill 20 yd shuttle and 40 yd dash, and it says in his bio that he gets to the second level and blocks there very well. Sounds like a good zone blocking guard to me.

Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
One prospect for Haslett's new 3-4 might be Suh or Gerald McCoy. If our favorite QB and Okung are both gone before our #4 pick, the best value might be to take one of the big-time defensive tackles. In this scenario, at least one of Suh or McCoy would have to be there for us.
Perhaps we could make the rookie DT our nose, in the small/quick Jay Ratliff model. Kick AH out to one end, make Jarmon the other end. Voila, the conversion of our defensive line to a 3-4 is largely accomplished. Just one idea. |

McCoy on the other hand I'm not so sure about. I think a few teams might try to trade up for Berry but even then I'm not entirely sure. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Suh and McCoy are penetrators who go for the QB and don't use up space like 3-4 DE's DT's do. I think if you get Suh we would have to stick with a 4-3

Talking about Suh as trade bait. |

ya add Cody to that, one of those guys could be starters at NT for us from day 1 I believe and Add anthony montgomery to that list of possible NT starters for us, but I think Dan Williams will go in the later rounds to either minnesota or pittsburgh. |

I could see him going in the late first or second. He's rated higher than Thomas and Thomas may have moved up into the second after the Senior Bowl. It's going to be interesting to see how things fall. If there's a run on o-linemen it could change alot of things. |

I agree. They are prototypical space eaters. But I'm looking at Suh or McCoy as one of the smaller, quicker, Jay Ratliff types of NT. Instead of being big cloggers, such smaller NT's also can be playmakers, as Ratliff has shown. Suh or McCoy could be the super-Ratliff, and that would not be a bad thing. I'm also wondering about who would provide value for a #4 pick if our favorites are gone. I'm not sure that we want to pick Thomas at #4. |

Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
As others have speculated, maybe Haden at #4? Or Berry? Or McLain?
I don't know about others, but I am not convinced that the second best OT or second best QB are worth the #4 pick. Then, barring a trade-down, we have to ask, who is worth #4? If our favorite QB and OT are gone at #4, what do you think, 53Fan? |

I think Bruce Campbell, Brian Buluga, Eric Berry, Joe Haden, Suh, McClain, or Gerald McCoy could all help us. If Okung and Bradford are our first 2 choices and they're gone and we can't trade down, we have a tough choice to make. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
We could take Anne Hathaway at #4. That would keep everyone else off balance.

I'd get horizontal with her, that's for sure.

Can't wait for Redskins 1st workouts on March 15 to hear the Shanahan's talk about guys like Brennan and Alridge so we can gauge what direction we may be goin in. |

Oh and it seems that Ryan Clark may become an unrestricted FA... Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
I posted in the Darren Sproiles thread a link about the redskins expressing interest. It is being reported in S.D. I am aware it could be false. BUT there is a connection with MS in that he saw him twice a year and probably really respects him as a player. Maybe someone he always coveted. He also fills 2 other needs in pr and kr. There are dots that can be connected for this to be more than a rumor.
So aquiring a guy like that would see the end of Rock, and ladell is making alot of money not doing much already. I like rock but I see the writing on the wall for the guy, he was part of the old guard. I am trying not to get to excited about this team or put some of the old stereotypes on us. I am trying to believe that all of our moves will be The Shanny's, Haslett's, and Allen's plan going into place. If this means we go out and sign all of these top notch guys spending a ton of money along the way. Then I will trust the guys and assume this is the LONG TERM PLAN. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Skins' interest in Sproles is pretty genuine. Though I have a feeling Sproles is planning to use the Redskins to get what he really wants. A big contract from the Chargers.
Not sure Sproles is aware that he'll be dealing with Bruce Allen. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Lombardi reporting that Rolle will be resigned in Arizona. They just don't want to pay him 12 mil for one year. Is there a reason why they can't just extend his contract? Why cut him so he was free to sign with another team? Just seems a little risky.

Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
This is from Casserly's comments about picking up some of the FA OL....
This year's class of unrestricted free agents is not considered an overwhelming one. Green Bay's Chad Clifton and Arizona's Mike Gandy appear to be the top tackles available. San Francisco's Tony Pashos played under Chris Foerster, Washington's new offensive line coach, with the 49ers and in Baltimore. While he seemed like an early favorite, 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said last week that he's hopeful Pashos will be locked up before he can hit the open market.
I honestly hope Pashos is smart enough to stall his talks with the 49ers until the market opens. I think since he already knows Foersters offensive scheme plus knowing the Skins need OL he would atleast wait and see what the Skins offer him. Hell I'd take whatever the Skins offered just to get away from the nut job of a HC out there. It will be interesting to see how many of those named wait to test the market or if they are slightly interested in working under Shanahan since he's known to alway have the best offensive line in the NFL. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Matty- You guys sound really silly right now. We are the Redskins with Dan Snyder as the owner. We will be in play for some free agents. The faces may have changed, but the business stays the same young fella. I honestly think it will be between us and the Seahawks for most players. Although it will be between the Buccs and Bears for the services of Peppers.

Not sure Sproles is aware that he'll be dealing with Bruce Allen.
It may come down to his personal preference as well vs. money. I mean taking the job with the Skins could mean more money then he's getting yes, but how much more is the question, then there is the fact that Shanahan always had a decent running game which will pad his stats. Then there's who do you work for.... Norv who hasn't mad it to a SB as a HC yet or Shanahan who has? |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Under the radar pick up- Kyle Van DonBosh to play that other dend position. Played with Haynesworth before and has a high motor plus size.

I want to agree with you but if Haslett is enamored as the media said with Peppers..... I can see us picking him up. Both the Bucs and Bears are not known to be teams who spend money so if it comes down to a hand full of teams I can see him coming to the Skins. But.... Peppers supposedly has made a comment that he wants to go to a team that is the hunt for a championship. I'm not doubting the Skins but 4-12 does not ring of SB next yr and I would guess as most when starting a new HC it will take 3-5 yrs to get there. Does Peppers have 3-5 yrs left in his tank? and is he willing to be patient? |

We sound silly? Really? Of course we will be in play for some free agents, some being the key word. |
Re: Prospects for Shanahans offense/Hasletts 3-4 D
Sb- normally I would agree with you, but I think this team has a faster turn around time. Last year the players gave up on Zorn. The team is better than they looked. There is a new buz around reskins park with Shanny here and Vinny gone. Secondly the Skins have the freedom to go after who ever they want with no cap to stay under. I honestly think we are a offensive line and runningback away from being back in contention.
