Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
We got him for the right base price that's for sure. Portis will play one more year of his contract and by next year we'll have a young buck ready to take over from LJ by next season's end. Great move
|
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
People exaggerate the whole locker room thing. I don't think his locker room presence is going to be a distraction at all. He's not gonna be 'the man' here. With CP, Santana, and Cooley around, hes not the only probowl level guy on the squad.
As for how i feel about him being here? I'm totally okay with it. I'm one of the guys that was bangin my head agaisnt the wall when Spurrier let go of Steven Davis. We NEED a tough guy that can pound away at weaker d-lines and isn't as fumble prone as Sellers. I wouldn't want him to get 300 carries, but allong with CP, we can seriously wear the hell out of a defense with our running game! Shannahan is seriously working on our o-line. I'm feeling a lot better about our team now. I mean, it's early to be optimistic, i know, but both our o-line and d-line are being adressed EARLY. Old baggage is GONE. new guys are signing PERFORMANCE based contracts that encourage improved play. All and all, i am more than happy with the Shanahans' and company's approach! HTTR! |
We have a coach and GM that have a plan for the future of the organization. We as fan need to sit back and let them make the decisions to get our roster ready for 2010 season. I trust that they know more about football than 99% of us on here. LJ signing is a low risk high reward signing due to his incentive type contract. If T. Owens can become a model football player than why not LJ. I think he just really wanted out of KC so he became a distraction. He from the DC area and he has alot to prove this year. I say lets wait and see how this plays out before we make a determination. We just dont have enough picks to draft a RB this year so we needed a veteran to back up Portis if he gets a season ending injury. LJ is the big brusing back we need to wear down defenses in the NFC East. I hope LJ gets off this season. 2 good backs are a must now.
Four words in your post says it all..."Let's wait and see" There's power in positive thinking, it relegates pessimism to second guessing. |

Oh yeah. And those faces appearing on Mount Rushmore are naturally-occurring phenomena.... Sad to say, this team has historically been enamored of freaking has-beens, and apparently, is willing to continue the tradition. |
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
Another reason this signing makes sense is this.
Shanny knows that he cannot improve the Oline ALL IN ONE YEAR....not realistic. The proof is in the pudding....he went out and signed an older back with ethics issues. When has Shanny done that before?...I can't remember. This is the guy that everyone was expecting to just use a different rookie 5th round draft choice every year to be the leading rusher...well...it looks like he has his head on straight and realizes our line sucks right now and he's going to need some Senior RBs to drag tacklers down the field for another year or two until the Oline gets corrected. Not a huge fan of this pickup due to ethics, but from a talent level AND value perspective AND transition strategy perspective....it all makes sense to me now |
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
Well I think the thing that worries me is the guy is coming home to his old high school buddies.
The old gang maybe a problem with him coming here. But this is all conjucture on my part as I do not know LJ, I do not know the area he is from, and I do not know who his old friends are. Now if he used to be pretty docile guy around the area and his family kept him in check as a kid who knows maybe he will be better off back at home. And the fact that being a Redskin maybe enough motivation to push him to be a better player and man. Only time will tell. |

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
i am satisfied with this signing. not thrilled, but as others have said, hes cheap and hasnt carried the ball as much as others his age. LJ and CP can run out their careers for us over the next couple of years, its a good stop gap while we address much more pressing issues along both lines.

No, actually, I'm not dissatisfied so far; and, following the "Great Purge", I DO realize we are in need of some running backs. But it seems as though we have this annoying habit of judging talent based on peak performances rather than on recent history (e.g., ARE, Stubblefield, Wilkinson, Sanders, etc., etc., just to name a few.) I feel that we've had MORE than our fair share of failed experiments. Based on the last four years, I'm of the opinion that LJ is on the decline rather than ascension. That DOESN'T mean he can't contribute, but as far as I'm concerned, I had hopes for a higher caliber back, since hopefully Portis will be shown the door before the beginning of the season. |
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
I like the move, and I think in a zone blocking scheme LJ has enough vision, speed, and power to be effective. I think he's matured and hopefully he'll be an asset in '10.

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
Pretty much all that's out there right now for backs are veterans teetering around the age of 30. LJ has the least amount of mileage on him so from that perspective this move makes sense.
I don't like the off the field baggage at all, but we didn't dedicate a ton of guaranteed money towards him so the risk isn't too high. |

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
With only 5 picks in the draft it's obvious some holes are gonna have to be filled with free agents... which happens to mostly be older vets.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
I believe LJ still has a lot left in the tank. At this point in his career, LaDanian Tomlinson has 141 games played, Larry Johnson 82 games. If he can stay healthy our running game is going to be sick next year.
|
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
I am going to abstain from voting on this one. I don't care who is pounding the rock, unless there is a significant upgrade on the O-line, it just sounds like a status-quo.
I think the team got better with this signing......financially. Who is/was a better back at age 29? LJ now? Or CP when he was 29? |

As I understand, one time he was charged for waving a gun during an argument with his girlfriend, another time he was accused of throwing a drink in a girl's face at a club. They have been on the job a couple months and made a few relatively minor moves so far. Every player they signed so far could just be backups meant to create the "competition" at every position that Shanny is looking for. IE: if LJ's presence makes Portis get his ass in gear then that's a good thing whether or not LJ gains a yard for us next year. |

Hopefully, every pick we have will be for a decent offensive lineman :) |
Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
SmootSmack is right, I think some of Larry's off field issues have been blown a tad out of proportion. To the best of my knowledge the guy has never been accused of sexual assault, and not to hijack this thread, but the Commish has been curiously quiet, yet again, on Big Ben's case. Just saying.
I think LJ will work out just fine here. His stats in terms of games played, career carries, and total yardage speak for themselves. He just doesn't have as much wear and tear as some are trying to suggest. Some may be forgetting that Larry Johnson has really good hands and can be a threat out of the backfield. We'll see though. I'm cautiously excited about this signing. |

Re: Redskins Sign Larry Johnson
Speaking of wear and tear. I checked Adrian Peterson's stats and he's on pace to shatter anything we've seen recently.
Over the first three years of his career, Adrian Peterson has 915 carries. Larry Johnson over the first five years had a very comparable 1,050 carries. For his career LJ has 1,421 carries. Adrian Peterson could come very close to LJ's career number of carries by season's end. Especially now that Chester Peterson is no longer coming off the bench to spell Peterson. Just adding a little perspective. |

I hope he does reach all the incentives, that would be a first in a signing like this for our squad. I just think his production could be equaled (spelling) with a younger back taken in the mid - late rounds of the draft. Its not a reach to think that with Shanahan. And for the people that keep quoting my posts acting like I am an idiot because I dont put names of possible alternatives to LJ in them, think about what you are saying, and then think about what I said. The RB's before shanahan molded them didn't have any real degrees of success, or were not known previous to entrance into his system, or RB factory, so to say. Just knowing his tendencies and track record with young RB's, this signing just didnt make sense. I hate the fact that we only have five picks. I think if we had the 7 or maybe 8 picks, this move doesnt even get made. But, heres to hoping. I can see the upside at the end of the tunnel now, one might say. Mechanix, I was primarily referring to this line of yours in a previous post "On an additional note, I love how noone questions these moves, or lack thereof"
Several people have questioned many moves since Shanahan came on board, even his coming on board. It would be wrong, totally wrong, to say there has been absolute blind faith in all the moves |

One has played 123 games in his career, the other 103 games, and the third guy 82 games, you'd probably put LJ at the top of that list. Granted, comparing apples to apples, LJ probably has the most wear and tear on his body. Even that is arguable when you look at Betts injury history. I don't think anyone's trying to shoot you down, bro. This move doesn't preclude the Redskins from drafting a really good back in the latter rounds. CJ Spiller could still be on a radar, as a matter fact, so I wouldn't interpret this move as the Redskins not willing to address their need for a future starter or current depth at running back. |

The backs were "great" because the o-line was great. Also, 1421 carries is very moderate milage, only slightly more than what Portis had circa the end of 2006. |

Honestly I never followed LJ much cuz, well cuz of who he played for...I mean c'mon the Chiefs are high in the runnin for most boring franchise. Like others I've just thought he's more of a headcase than anything else. I don't think there's any disputing he's the best FA RB, possibly by a wide margin. Johnson is tough as nails and hasn't had near the line to run behind most marque backs get. He's a bit like CP in that regard but Johnson's line was even worse. I could see him have at least two huge seasons. I think the big question now is whether Shanny tries to make CP into a slasher again. Not sure Portis has the speed/agility to get there again, which makes me wonder if CP is headed out the door if we get a solid prospect. Best case scenario we have two vet RBs rededicating themselves to career and team along w/ a great young prospect who can break some big ones. |

According to some people there are young budding future All-pro runningbacks falling off trees who are just waiting to be signed... I would be happy with us using one pick in the backfield. A lot of people are calling for Blount but I am not convinced that he makes it to our 4th pick. We aren't the only people who know about his 2008 stats (which were off the charts). Does anyone think that Dexter McCluster is worth our second round pick? He is sick... He is just as dangerous catching the ball too. |
