Well I'm glad that you guys have such great inside sources.

Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
you do realize that these are voluntary and that if the Skins management team looked like they were forcing AH to be there, they could be fined or have draft picks taken away right? AH has said he's not going to miss any mandatory ones.
If you reread my post, I never said anything about attending the voluntary workouts. I just don't think a (professional) player that makes an obscene amount of money has the right to decline a request to play a position their coach wants them to play. It's not unreasonable for our best defensive lineman to play NT. They're not asking him to play safety or guard. They're asking him move down the line and knuckle up. It's not unreasonable at all. |

Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
For me it's more about the principle. Maybe I'm old school but I don't believe in pandering to over-paid athletes. Kemo if he ever gets healthy is an ideal NT (i forgot we'd signed him) but like you said, that's a big if.

To the other, if your employer tells you to do something you and you think you could do a different task better, are you saying you wouldn't try to discuss it with him. NFL players just have more spotlights, and AH has a ton more. Did AH ever not play a down where Blache told him to play? IF Haslett tells him to play NT, do you think he will simply not go out onto the field? If he's on the team he will do whatever football position is asked of him, will he be the happiest camper probably not, and if it's really out of his comfort zone then I imagine he won't be as good at it, or as motivated. This is no different than any other employee in a business. Shanahan/Haslett will either fit him into the scheme and get him to buy in, or he will be a good player who never lives up to his potential. But he's not going to just walk off the field and pout. |

Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
The Redskins are not trading Hanyesworth unless its for a top 3 draft pick this season. We would have another hole to fill then. We be better off hoping to move Andre Carter and JC and hope to get a least 3rd picks for each. Why do the Redskins every year have limited draft picks. This just doesnt seem to work every year they try this same old crap of giving up draft picks. Maybe Jarmon can start at DE in the 3-4 defense. We look like we just wasted a 3rd pick on him if he can not play in the 3-4 defense.
|
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
Top 3 as in Rams, Lions, or Bucs? Can't see that happening.

maybe he means top 3 in the 2nd round? i'd absolutely love to get the lions 2nd round pick. with a whole night to sit on the pick, we'd certainly get all sorts of interesting trade offers. or, if we had the pick, we'd have plenty of time to make sure we were making the best selection. |

What makes you think this? I really am curious why you think our FO would expect that type of compensation. What precedent is there that a team would send a top 3 pick in the first round for a locker room cancer? Granted, Al is talented, arguably the most talented defensive tackle in the league, but he is a huge pain in the ass. I have argued that no team would give us any first round pick for him, let alone a top 3 pick. I know we fleeced Carolina for Sean Gilbert but the league has changed dramatically since then. If a GM sent us a top 3 pick, they are putting their job on the line for a guy who doesn't give a crap what his coaches want. For the record, I still want him on the team. I think if you are paying a coach 7.5 million he can figure out a solution with your problem child but I certainly understand where Shanahan is coming from on this. |
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
Forcing Haynesworth to play NT is not optimal. When you're paying 100 million dollars to a guy, you don't put him in a position that gives less returns JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ****ING SAID SO. It represents a satisificing attitude, not an optimizing one.
It was the same with Jason Taylor. An undersized pass rusher trying to be a "disciplined" run stuffer that can hold the point of attack? DIDN'T WORK. |
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
Still trying to figure out what makes Al a "locker room cancer." If he's any type of cancer it's probably more of a "coaching staff cancer." You guys act like he's the only one in the league doing what he does. It's not like he's holding out or anything.
|
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
This whole idea of signing all-pro players then trying to change what they do to fit your scheme is kinda stupid if you ask me. Pick a scheme, stick with it, and sign the appropriate players. If you're gonna make a change, get the right players for it first.

Unfortunately Shanahan is a 3-4 guy, he's trying to get the appropriate player for that scheme, Haynesworth just doesn't want to switch to NT. Can't blame AH since when he signed he specified a 4-3 D. There was nothing wrong with running a 4-3 which Shanahan should have kept and everyone would be happy. |
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
And it was no secret that Haynesworth would not participate in voluntary off-season workouts, no matter who's coaching the team. I still wonder about the premature talk about switching to a 34 front.

I think it's a media-driven much-ado-about-nothing with Al. It's completely overblown just to have something negative to report about the Skins in this very successful offseason. Haynesworth IS working out, very hard, with the personal trainer he used to get to the Pro Bowl in 2007. He shows up when required to. He'll play and make a huge difference when the season starts. |

How is it premature talk? Its been confirmed a thousand times that we're switching to a 3-4 front. The only question is how much 3-4 we'll actually run. |

I don't want okung in the first place. I want to make sure the Lions take him, so that either Suh or McCoy will be there at 4. Then we can easily trade down and acquire more picks. |

The word VOLUNTARY as defined by Webster's - proceeding from from one's own choice or consent. Having power of free choice. Sheriff Shanahan and the other coaches in the NFL need to shut their mouths about not attending VOLUNTARY events. The coaches should be fined for creating hostile work environment. LOL! Every offseason the coaches start this same bullshit and whine like little bitches. Then the press and fans overreact. If the NFL wants to make some of these things an OBLIGATION and part of the job description then DO IT! ...other wise shut the hell up Sheriff Shanahan or whatever you think you are! |

He bashes coaches publicly. A new regime comes in and talks team, leadership and everyone being committed and then Al does his own thing. he goes on a radio show and tells the world that he doesn't see himself as a nose tackle. The team cuts him a check for $21 million but he cannot train with the team. One of his defensive teammates asks why he cannot at least join the guys and try the offseason workout. Instead of working out with the team for a week or two and making it look like he is on board he creates a national story and creates a negative perception issue for Shanahan to have to deal with out of the gate. He isn't the only one in the league doing it, but why can't he at least make it look like he gives a shit about somthing besides himself. Al was one of the first guys to come out and say that things need to be done to prevent the losing but he can't show up for a few weeks to at least make it look like he is on board to prevent another 4-12 season and finish dead effing last in the division for the 3rd year in a row? One of the consistent criticisms of the last two coaching staffs was that the inmates were running the asylum and he couldn't care less. I love what he brings as a player but he is obviously a nightmare to deal with. His coaches want him there, his teammates want him there but he just doesn't care. |
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
You know what's ironic about him bashing Blache last year is that Blache was the guy who probably more than anyone pushed for the Skins to sign AH
|
Re: Schefter: "Skins NOT shopping Big Al"
What's wrong with him saying he doesn't think that he'd be best used at nose tackle, but he'd play where they put him?
Like I've said a million times, dude didn't know what the offseason program would be, probably had it already planned and maybe paid for well in advance of all of this. AH didn't create the story, this shouldn't even be a damn story. If he feels that he can improve more doing it the way he has before, great. Unless you're there and able to professionally evaluate him and determine that he'd be better at the park then what's the issue? Show up for a couple of weeks.. he probably already has his trainer booked, you don't just sign a guy up for that the day before then tell him wait 2 weeks. Maybe he gives a shit about himself because he realizes that he can improve himself. Yeah it'd be great to have him there but face it, he's not. That doesn't make him a horrible guy. |

I understand him wanting to use "his guy" to train but why couldn't he have come out here for a week or two or even bring his guy out here? It is a story because Allen said the status quo is unacceptable and the team is selling a different culture but Al does whatever he wants. I don't think he is a horrible guy. He is my favorite player to watch. I just think he is being totally selfish and that this controversy could have easily been prevented. |

How is that a measure of how things will shakeout? It is a voluntary camp and he has already said he will not be there. When Allen or Shanahan talk about changing the status quo we are talking about level of play, level of coaching and winning. Working out together, sitting in a circle, holding hands and singing Kumbaya is not going make us a better team. There is no magical team summer workout or team togetherness activity that is going to make us a better team. If Haynesworth were a QB or offensive skill position then I see the need for him to be here. But to see him decide which gap to take in a non-contact drill is pointless. He is a DL not a rocket scientist. It is funny how Farve (a QB) can skip everything, summer workouts, training camp and preseason; show up for one preseason game and nobody in the press calls him a cancer. But when Haynesworth skips volunteer shit he is called a cancer. Double standard? |

I think only so many things could happen: 1 he shows up, and basically the media chills out 2 he doesn't show up, the media grill MS and it is clear that MS wants to move him 3 he doesn't show up, the media grill MS and he handles it tactfully and the furor dies down. Whichever option occurs, we should be able to see more. I think at least. |
