What a disaster for Boise State. Va Tech was obviously WAY over-ranked. Losing in Blacksburg to a subdivision team? Wowwwy.
Boise State went from, "hey, we beat a top 10 team on the road" to "wow, we only beat a team by 3 that got handled by a subdivision team at home."
damn shame that its a "rebuilding year" with a senior qb thats started games the last 4 years, all of our running backs have experience, all our receivers are upper classmen pretty much, upper classman o-line...its damn sad that its come to this. we suck on both lines and our linebackers arent good enough, bottom line. congrats to jmu for the win today, but no offense its just inexcusable that VT loses at home to a 1AA team. again, i mean no disrespect to jmu fans or their team, but this is a disgrace.
Two things happened today. One, our defense is good...especially at pressure. That killed their o-line. Tech's o-line is an embarrassment. Especially that left side. Two, a short-weeked Tech didn't show up. Right now a lot of their players look like they are going through the motions (looked a little like that last week to). What sucks is that Tyrod is in the top 5 in QBs in the country. On a good team with a better o coordinator he is a Heisman candidate. Tech isn't nearly as bad as they looked today but they have fundamental problems on their lines. For some reason they never seem to recruit along the o-line very well and on the d-line they have to get lucky that their undersized athletic D linemen that they recruit end up being special. Otherwise they're just...undersized and useless. Tech also has way too many average players starting to be a real contender. They have to get better at recruiting. They were killing it for a while after the Vick years but now London is recruiting the state better and JMU, Richmond and W&M recruit the state very well. They still pull the top players but they lose out on the depth players that would be good starters in the junior/senior years. Especially on the lines. |
Re: ***2010-2011 College Football Thread***
Oh and the other thing. The top teams in the FCS (JMU, Montana, Richmond, Villanova, etc...) would compete in the ACC. They certainly would be bottom feeders but they'd be 2-3 win teams. Last year I believe both Richmond and W&M beat ACC teams and JMU imploded late in the game to lose to Maryland. The ACC was almost 0-3 against CAA teams in one day.
Why teams would schedule top level FCS teams is beyond me. It is too risky. |
Re: ***2010-2011 College Football Thread***
tech has been losing recruiting battles to unc lately especially on the lines. the tech o-line coach likes quicker guys rather than heavy guys on the o-line. same with the d-line. our lines will always be smaller and quicker as long as he is there and bud foster is on d. not a fan of the o-line strategy, we have been weak there for a while.

They lost out on on a top caliber kid from my area (2 hours north of Tech) to UNC. Tech supposedly never had a chance. UVA consistently beats them on o-line guys. UVA blows. I don't get it. It's like they don't even try. |

No I don't. The fact that Boise had to come back against a team that lost to James Madison at home is a joke. It just shows how much Va Tech sucks and how good Boise isn't. Like I said, they are a 5 loss team in the SEC. |
Re: ***2010-2011 College Football Thread***
VT needs to hand the headset over to Bud Foster. Along with FB, the whole offensive (and yes they are quite offensive) staff needs to go.

Come on now. Take a little bit of humble pie at least. You were touting Boise hard after Monday's game. Turns out their opponent was soft and they still only won by 3 (and allowed 30 points- that beastly James Madison defense held them to 16 in Blacksburg). |

I feel like every single year since Mike Vick, VT has had the defense, special teams, and running game to be a national contender, but they just haven't had a QB worth a shit. Now they've got one, and...... It's too bad to, because of all the "local" football programs, they're my favorite (don't really care for Maryland or UVA football). I'd like to see them do well. |

I did not see the game but from th score it sounds like the D did their part and it was the O that could not do anything. IF that was the case people cannot blame that loss on rebuilding because the O has plenty of upper classmen. |

the D sucks just as much as the O. tbh im more worried about the defense because their tackling has been atrocious and the depth is very poor. lots of injuries there, no experience, and the talent level is just lower. when we were top class on defense we had all american linebackers. vince hall, adibi, james anderson, cody grimm, etc. now we have bruce taylor, jeron gouveia winslow, and lyndell gibson. 2 3 star guys and 1 4 star. but from watching them they are just average at best, and winslow is not good at all. and my comment wasnt stating that we are rebuilding. i was saying its a shame to call it a rebuilding year if we have so much experience on offense. this was not meant to be a rebuilding year with tyrod as a senior plus a full stable of receivers and backs. |

Im just happy they didnt show the game on TV. Tech blah blah blah, if it is one thing its another thing with this team. Same issues on offense every single year. There are no excuses for that loss. ACC been a second rate conference for awhile anyways. How did FSU make out? But I did hear something interesting about the Big ten vs the SEC on the espn pre game show, the last 10 meetings between the two before any match up yesterday...the Big Ten held the edge 8-2. I didnt check up on it, and it doesnt sound right, but that didnt sound too dominate. |

Nope I was referring D-Bag to my above post in response to his previous post. Admit? lolololol funny dude you are. Id admit as defensive as you are about the subject shows your uneasiness with SEC vs Boise State question. Yeah I still stand by Boise State could beat just about every team in SEC, I think its just humerous how defensive SEC guys get at a statement that is not ridiculous. Relax it just second rate amature football. |

Hold on, so we are going to write VT off because they went into a gome over confident and played down to a lesser opponent. The season isn't over yet and VT will be playing an SEC team in the Orange Bowl.

Well, they're 0-2 so far, and they got punked in their house by a 1AA team. So I'd say anyone including UNC has a chance. |
Re: ***2010-2011 College Football Thread***
I knew the SEC was overrated. Little doubt that they're the best conference with their top teams, however the idea that their bottom feeders could easily beat other conferences is a bit of an overstatement.
Anyway, there were no SEC - Big Ten match ups this year during the regular season. Coming into the Bowl season, over the past five years, the Big Ten had an 8-7 lead over the SEC (after going 2-1 against the SEC in the 2006-2007 bowls).

The SEC leads the Pac-10 62-39-5 (.608). However, over the past 12 years (1998 - 2009), the Pac-10 actually leads the SEC 11-9 (.550).

VS Big XII: Over the past 12 years ('98 -'08) the SEC holds a 24-17-0 (.585) advantage.

VS ACC: Over the past 12 years ('98 -'08) the SEC holds a 24-17-0 (.585) advantage.
So there you have it. The SEC has dominated the ACC and Big XII in recent years but has had problems against the Pac-10 and Big 10. They're the best conference in college football but I'm tired of the idea that the SEC is the only conference that has a tough conference schedule. This argument becomes more prominent when an SEC team isn't selected for the National Championship game. |

I haven't seen any of that. I have and will continue to believe the SEC is the best conference in football, but it's absolutely idiotic to think that any school outside the SEC doesn't have a difficult conference schedule. I'm not someone who thinks that a team like Mississippi State could waltz into the Big 10 and beat everybody. I mean, Big XII teams play the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ok State, Texas Tech, etc etc. Those teams have tough schedules for sure. The Big 10 this year has some tough outs in Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Those are tough conferences, but I maintain that the athletic ability in the SEC is simply a cut above. Since the AP poll made it's debut, these past four seasons are the first time any conference has ever won the national title four times in a row. Not to mention that those four titles came from three different schools. Oh yeah, in the 12 years the BCS has been in existence, the SEC is 6-0 in the title game. And right now, the SEC represents about a 1/4 of the top 25, with 6 ranked programs. Look, say what you want about the SEC. When someone else wins a title, then maybe we can revisit this. |

When someone else wins a title, then maybe we can revisit this.
Like I said, I have no problem with calling the SEC the best conference in college football. Maybe it's just a Georgia thing but the bias against non-SEC teams down here can get downright ugly. Especially in 2005 when Georgia won the SEC. There were people down here complaining about the Texas/USC National Championship (both 12-0 teams) because "Dey didn't have to play no SEC schedule" "Oh if they was in the SEC they would have lost 3 or 4 games." Same thing the year before when Georgia won the SEC after a 9-2 season. "Oh if Oklahoma and USC was in the SEC blah blah blah." Last year when Texas was selected to play in the National Championship game over Florida there were SEC fans talking about how Florida should be in the National Championship. Then of course when Alabama beat Texas the Bama fans wouldn't shut up about how bad the Big XII was. It was like 'of course you beat them, you knocked out their star QB in the first half.' Not saying Texas would have won but it obviously would have been a much closer game had Texas not been forced to resort to a True Freshman QB. A much smaller example was when I was on campus last year and I picked up on a phone conversation from a Georgia Bulldog fan where he talked about how he was glad that South Carolina beat Clemson because it helped prove that the SEC was the best conference in college football. Please if you ever hear me say that I'm glad the Cowboys/Eagles/Giants won because it proved that the NFC East was the best division in football feel free to slap me. In fact beat me with a 2X4. I feel like if the stereotypical SEC Homer was in charge of the AP polls the top 15 would look like this. 1. Alabama 2. Florida 3. Arkansas 4. South Carolina 5. Auburn 6. LSU 7. Georgia 8. Tenneesee 9. Miss State 10. Alabama 2nd Team 11. Florida 2nd Team 12. Ole Miss 13. Kentucky 14. Vanderbilt 15. Ohio State You seem more reasonable Scud and maybe it's only the more extreme examples that stick out in my memory, but in my experience the level of homerism can get pretty bad down here. Above all I think this proves that College football needs a playoff of some kind. The BCS system is a joke, the fat cats can talk all they want about the idea that every game matters and it's a year long playoff but I have a hard time seeing the significance of Southwest Southern State Juco vs BCS powerhouse. ACC basketball is similar to SEC football but I think people don't make as big a deal about it because 1. College basketball is less popular and 2. March Madness settles everything beyond a reasonable doubt. |

Barf Canes. I lost $50 on that game too. I like home dogs, and Pitt getting 4.5 at home against Miami on a short week playing back to back road games.... Oh well. I was 6 of 7 betting this season prior to tonight. Hopefully I'm not running into a cold streak. |

Both Pitt and Miami suck this season. Miami looked ok, but Pitt was so awful, you really can't tell if Miami is good or not. Wannestedt is going to be unemployed after this season I think. He did wonders to bring the program back, but I think he has gotten as far as he can. He has no QB and absolutely no O line to work with.

I doubt that( at least 6 could kill Boise). This is a down year for the SEC thus far if you can say that. Georgia sucks, the schools from Mississippi have downgraded it seems. With that said only Bama, Ark, Fla, and LSU could beat the hell out of Boise. Old ball coach at S. Carolina could beat Boise too, but it won't be a whoopin'. Boise St never has had any right to a real BCS game, nor will they ever, playingt hat BS schedule they do. Whether in the old Mountain West or the revamped WAC, that level of competiton was a joke. Remember Hawaii vs Georgia in the Sugar Bowl a few years back? That being said, Boise is still a pretty decent team, just really not ready to be a major power just yet. THe ACC in football, is to the SEC what t he MAC is to the Big Ten, a minor league, so even if t hey did beat Va Tech, it wouldn't have proven they belonged. |
