Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
we should impulse fire our coach and get a new one...clearly a new coach is the direction this org. needs...I mean it's worked before right...right!
Let's not forget what this team really is. Whatever shades of the Joe Gibbs 2007 playoff team faded away at the midway point of 2008 after a 6-2 start. Beginning at the 2-6 slide to finish that season, and counting last season plus this year's games, the Redskins have lost 20 of the last 27 games.
That puts us in the same class as the Browns, the Lions, the Chiefs, the Raiders and the Rams of the league. And it's going to take a while to get out.
It's going to take Shanahan & Co. at least 3 yrs. to construct a roster of players that could possibly win at least 10 games. First he needs to purge the roster of it's dead weight, stop trading away it's draft picks and reconcile to a new beginning of building a team that will be able to compete for an extended period of time. In order to accomplish that they've got to bury that win now philosophy. This team does not have the right players right now [on either side of the ball] and I think they'll figure it out sooner rather than later. The only problem with my reasoning is that if the team dosen't begin to win quickly after all the happy talk leading into the season, Shanahan himself will start feeling the heat. He's going to find that the same rail out of town that all his predecessors have experienced will be just a heartbeat away. Question? How patient are the fans going to be with this administration if the team dosen't begin to show some promise? Patience!!.....Time!!...Oh Boy!! |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Three games into the season in a gutted/ripped out/Vinny fecked over/short on draft picks team and a lot of guys want to burn down Redskin Park already.
Yea Irish let's be honest, how many teams in the NFL are we better than talent wise? Cleveland, STL, Detroit and Buffalo. That's probably it my man
You are correct. The Skins losing to StL isnt like if NE had lost to Buffalo yesterday. The Skins are a bottom of the league team like those you mentioned so yesterday's game was one weak team losing to another. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Definitely bottom of the league right now. There's no way in hell you go from a consistent top ten defense to number 32? The 3-4 isn't that bad. Haslett is horrible, no other way around it.
|
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
98 and 30 are the only 3-4 players. Maybe Moore.. Fletcher doesn't fit the scheme, he's out of place and his tackles are way down.
I agree, but what I'm saying is out of all he seems to not being doing as terrible you know? I mean I'm jumping the gun, but I don't see this crap working out, we have a good 3 years till they get this whole team in check. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
The defense has issues but firing Haslett 3 games in isn't going to solve anything.
|
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
The problem I have is, why bring him in when the 3-4 isn't fit here? I can understand getting rid of Blache, but bringing in Haslett only sets us back a good 2 years maybe more.
Just wasn't a smart move. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
I've always heard it takes 7 years to field a team to the point where it is dynasty/repeatedly competitive, like New England, IND, etc...
By the time this team is ready to go, McNabb would be 39 turning 40, probably retired. Portis will be retired. Cooley will be 35, our young players will be nearing 30. The whole team should be ready to go but we would probably definitely need a new QB by that point. And thats saying Dan sticks with Shanahan that long. Even if it takes 5 years to get competitive, most of our standout players will be nearing retirement if not retired. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
7 years?

Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
I agree that Haslett has sucked but in all honesty we just dont have the talent to be a great D..... Orakpo is amazing so he can play any defense, 92 is a really good DT not NT! Our corners are avg at best, Hall has games where he looks great and then he has games like yesterday. Carlos Rogers is a bum, the guy gives up stupid wide open plays every game, he can't catch worth a shit and is slow. Landry is a monster and run d and pass rush but his cover skills suck. Moore is young and athletic so he's also a keeper. Fletcher is a border line HOF player, but he doesn't fit the 3-4 scheme. Everyone else on the defense just isnt talented enough to carry this team. Look at Dallas for example, they have a great pass rush and very good Corners. Jenkins and Newman are as good as it gets.
Either way we have to rebuild and plan for the future, we don't have a win now team imo |

Just wasn't a smart move.
Obviously you're not going to get every player you need in one offseason, and that goes for any system change, offense included. It's going to take another offseason to get closer to where things need to be on both sides of the ball. |

True, at this point we're married to Has and this crappy ass 3-4 defense. Scrapping him or the defense just isn't the answer right now. But he's done just a horrible job of implementing this system and an even worse job making in- game substitutions and game planning. Where's Jeremy Jarmon? Where's Chris Wilson for crying out loud!? Look, the 3-4 works. But there's no way in hell we should be dropping from #10, or whatever we were last year, to last in the league. That's more than a personnel problem in my opinion. They came in here married to this defensive philosophy and now we're paying a dear price. |

I agree, I guess it's easier to change both things at the same time rather than fixing the O at one point and the D at that other, would take twice as long. Guess I'm just becoming impatient with the team, same old story since 94 for me, it's depressing. |

Absolutely. Its not the defense, or for that matter the offense, its that they dont have players talented enough to make it work. Getting that talent will take time. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
7 years?
Yes. I'm not over-exaggerating. I watched a special on NFL football 2 or 3 years ago, and they were examining the major/most winning franchises, and they showed their stats and barring the occasional one bad season, it took most of the teams 5 to 7 seasons before they got to the point where every season was at least a wild card or playoff appearance. After they achieved that point, it was easy to replace the players here and there. We are failling because each time there is a new coach, they fail to bring in the proper players that is needed. The closest we ever got was when Saunders was here and he had his own QB, who they should have started because he knew the system, and at that point Collins was young enough to have a few good seasons. Collins did eventually prove his worth in 07, but by then it made little different because in 08 they went back to Campbell. In hindsight, if the organization stays with Shanahan and Allen, they need to bring in the correct personnell over the next few seasons...we do not have that right now.... |

I've been listning to 106.7 the fan all morning and "not surprisingly" many of the callers are all blaming Haslett for the teams woes. It seems to be a never ending cycle among Skins fans.....as soon as things take a turn for the worse, start firing everybody, always the easy way out. It's going to take a while to get this team up to par, we're not going to get there by firing caches every year. Sometimes I wonder about some of these so-called Redskin fans. |

I'm listening to 106 too, Longtimefan. Who should the fans be blaming? Please tell me who? Seriously. The stats don't lie, we're the worse defense in the National Football Legue. The word is out on the street, you can run and look for certain blitz packages when you play the Washington Redskins. Sam Bradford, a rookie without his best running back, looked pretty darn good yesterday. We've effed around with our best defensive lineman for the entire offseason, plug him in nickel packages, Andre Carter is covering running backs, and Kemo, who can't be cut fast enough, is playing on roller skates the entire game. This falls squarely on Haslett's shoulders. Yes, yes, yes, yes...this team is rebuilding and we don't have all the pieces right now. But what team has all the pieces? The Jets, horrible example I know, lost Kris Jenkins for the season and didn't skip a beat. My point is, teams adjust based on their current roster personnel and they move on. This is why there is so much outrage at Has and justifiably so. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Just getting a head start on it. No Haslett wasn't responsible for that McNabb pick, but we already knew the game was over. I know the offense has problems, but I've seen enough of the offense to know it's not anything that can't be corrected. The rushing game started to come around today before we abandoned it, and the passing game is good enough and will only get better if McNabb keeps gelling with his receivers.
The real issue at hand in this thread is our defense. I was willing to give a pass for getting gashed by the Texans offense, but letting a rookie quarterback missing a Pro Bowl running back in the backfield look like he did today is unacceptable. I don't believe the players are at fault as much as the scheme is, and the scheme sucks. The players aren't made for it. The majority of the players on our defense were damn good at being in a 4-3, and while some players have emerged in this scheme, namely Orakpo and Landry, I just don't believe that Haslett's defense will be successful in this league. We're not even 4 games into the season and the secret is out, and everybody knows it. Our offense isn't to the point yet where we can get into shootouts and win, and the more I see of this defense the more I think our offense is going to have to keep putting up more and more points on the board if it expects to win games. All we heard all offseason was about how the majority of our defensive players would have an easy transition to the 3-4. Well our defense has looked historically bad so far, and honestly I do believe next season we would be better off going back to a 4-3. I understand making the transition to a 3-4 from a 4-3 isn't easy, but we shouldn't be this bad this early in the season. Jim Haslett's defense is trash, and I just don't believe that if he can't make adjustments this early in the season then he won't ever be successful here in Washington. Instead of throwing away the majority of the players this offseason we should just go back to the defense they are comfortable with. Btw congratulations St. Louis. We just gave you your first September win in 4 seasons, and your second overall win in your last 29 games.
So we should look good now and bad later in the season? |

I'm actually starting to think that firing him might not be a bad idea. Sure keep the 3-4 for now, but I have zero confidence in this guy Jim Haslett. While it's true we don't have the talent to run this defense, we do have talented players on defense; two Pro Bowlers and maybe two more in the making, Landry and D.Hall. The opposing offensive coordinators seem to be two steps ahead of him and we're constantly reacting. |

I've always believed "good" coaches find a way to maximize players talents. Our D/C prefers scheme over personell and it's not working. Maybe Haslett is not a "good" coach but for now we're stuck with him. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Still seems to me that the secondary is more the issue and not the front seven. We were way too soft in coverage especially on 3rd downs.
|
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
The pattern of 3rd downs yesterday said a lot. It seemed Bradford knew where to find the slant open on a no. of occassions. I think Spag's knowledge of Haslett shouldn't be underestimated, but at the same time it doesn't seem that Haslett really mixes it up that much. At least not in a way to confuse the O.
I wonder if Shanny will have him scale back blitzes next week. Sure they got some sacks but overall our blitzing has gotten us burned & the secondary has communication/assignment issues IMO, not talent issues. |

Hall blows. He has made our Safties look bad for two seasons. Hall's best move: Blows coverage/assignment, turns around and looks at Doughty/Landry/Moore and blames them for not covering the guy he just released way too early. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
Jim Haslett doesn't need to be fired. This team is causing turnovers every game unlike last year. The aggressive blitzes have to be called at the right time and not the majority on 3rd downs. With the Eagles on deck, Laron Landry will have to keep Vick in the pocket and cause him to pass when he doesn't want to. Most people said that this team with so many new faces would struggle in the beginning so I'm not surprised. Just be patient and watch how we play against the Eagles. They will be ready.

I think the most frustrating thing right now is that the defense really did not need to be changed. Sure they could've tweaked it but over hauling to a 3-4 was stupid. You can cause turnovers and sacks from a 4-3. What seems to be most annoying is Haslett simply has no idea how to adjust. At least Blache knew how to do that.

I agree, especially when we are blitzing on 3rd down 90+% of the time. Coverage has to be tighter against the blitz especially on 3rd down. If you are giving up quick slants, bubble screens, and skinny posts for first downs on 3rd and 7+ ytg there is a problem with the coverage behind the blitz. |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
This was the worst game for our run defense this season, and our pass defense certainly wasn't good (enough) in this game. It was a below average performance from the defense overall.
The offense was worse. Turnovers, three and outs, zero ability in the passing game. Just ugly. We ran the ball better than in the past, which is a lone positive. If you can't pass, you can't win, and we can't pass right now (last week's dominance of a poor Texans defense aside). |

The defense is suppose to be the strength of the team though. We already know the offense is below average. This has been a top ten defense with many of the same guys. So how do we go from top ten to dead last? |
Re: The Official Defense Has Major Issues/Fire Jim Haslett Thread
First of all, most of you sound like a bunch of impulsive women. Man up and have some patience.
Second of all, it's clear that some of you don't know jack about 3-4 defense, yet you're calling for Haslett to be fired. Lastly, people can learn new things, but you have to be willing to give them time and suffer through mistakes. Mistakes are a part of learning. This is how PROGRESS is made. I'm not saying we'll be better at the end, but we've got to find out. Progress isn't easy. Don't panic and start whining at the first sign of adversity. Be strong and weather the storm in hopes that we'll be better in the end. |

It wasn't the problem, however, if you have a way to improve it you need to be gutty enough to go for it.
Our coverage units have been pretty soft all year, which isn't a positive, but it would have been a problem in a 4-3 zone-blitzing defense as well. Biggest difference in this game is that Kareem Moore can cover, but he can't tackle. Essentially, I don't think he's an improvement over Doughty, but we lose some run defense for some pass defense. |
