Re: To All The Liberals
Another good point...about the Depression.
We're in a severe recession. Unemployment is sky high. A few years ago, home ownership was at an all-time HIGH, now it's at an all-time LOW. Inflation is coming next year. Energy costs are rising. The "Healthcare" bill is costing people more money RIGHT NOW and giving no benefits. They're raising taxes dramatically in 2 months DURING A DEEP RECESSION. (tax rate hikes for everyone, reduction of child credits, re-reinstatement of inheritance/death tax, lower standard deduction, etc...all from expiring Bush tax cuts they refuse to extend). Then, the President wants to pass Cap-and-Trade, meaning higher energy costs on top of the current rate increases, plus higher food/product/service costs and less jobs... Most of working America has realized that if we don't stop this President's agenda NOW, we'll be in a real Depression. Yes, the economy was struggling when he came into office, but he's done the exact OPPOSITE of everything that needs to be done. More spending AND higher taxes...taking over companies/banks, trying to detroy free markets, especially in healthcare/insurance fields, discouraging employers to hire more...it almost looks intentional.
Buster, with all due respect homie, this isn't lining up with the economic data that we're seeing and have seen over the past twelve months. This is the fastest post recession recovery we've seen in a generation or better. How we go from here back to a Depression is beyond me. The auto companies have returned to viability, TARP has been repaid with interest and at a profit to the taxpayer. You know that, right? You can't cut corners when you inherit such an economy as Obama did. You have to spend and cut taxes. You know he's done that too, right? What's troubling coming from, what I believe to be, reasonable people like yourself, GMScud (hell, I'll throw in Firstdown) and others is had we elected John McCain, the size of his stimulus program would have been very comparable in scope to Obama's. Definitely scaled down some, but he would have had to do something nonetheless. The bank bailouts weren't even optional, so I wont' go there. I'm not economic prognosticator, but let's see how things play out over the next 12-24 months. I think the economy will be better off and not worse. |

Well I can tell you that Obama doesn't think government is the solution to all problems. In fact, I don't think he believes that government is the solution to most of our problems. But that's neither here nor there as I'm sure you'll believe otherwise even if the man was standing right in front of you saying it in six different languages. What he believes (why do I feel like I'm constantly defending Obama when all I'm really trying to do is clarify and debunk myths) is that government needs to expand in some areas and needs to be reduced [drastically] in some areas. It's not an either or proposition, I think it's this and that. We can't just slice government to the bone to satisfy our ideology and political point of view. The quality of life of the average American would be impacted in a negative way if we had less firemen, fewer police officers to keep our streets safe. What if we didn't regulate and properly inspect our meats, produce, and dairy products, as well as over the counter drugs that make us well and reduce visits to the doctor's office? How about if we suddenly did away with the EPA, an agency started by Richard Nixon, how do we then implement environmental laws and safety standards that big business must comply with? How can we have a safe enviornment in which in our children and ederly citizens live, breath, and lead healthy lives? I don't know about you, but I think that's the role of government. With the growing threat of terrorism everyday from every corner of the globe, should Congress reduce the size or do away with Homeland Security; The agency charged with protecting our borders and making us less vulnerable to terrorists threats? I'm not making an argument for big government, I'd just like to know what people mean when they say 'reduce' the size of government. Again, what's the prescribe policy to achieve this? Shall we subscribe to the Rand Paul and Ron Paul school of thought, where they would like to abolish the Department of Education and the Federal Reserve? Or do we need more regulation to govern our equity and bond markets to ensure Joe Investor doesn't get burned by Enron, AIG, and Lehman Brothers sending a ripple effect around the world? What's the happy medium here? |
Re: To All The Liberals
Should government not be concerned with the welfare of our ocean and sea life, as well as the livelyhood of the hard working Americans who live in the Gulf Coast region when oil companies get careless and are more concerned with profits than safety? Who's going to protect the little guy, who by the way is still getting back on his feet from Katrina, when BP is gushing millions of gallons of oil in our waters and onto our beaches for an entire summer?
Should we trust big oil to clean up the mess and govern themselves or should Big Brother to be there with, at times, a heavy hand to ensure that foreign and domestic companies are playing by the rules? I'll take the EPA with all of it's warts everyday of the week in that scenerio. |

He's visiting a region hit by a terrorist attack in the not-so-distant future (hotel bombing a few years ago, still unstable region). He's taking more warships than EVER used by a President on a trip, booking an ENTIRE hotel and shutting down all business in the area for 3 days, taking 3,000 people along...FOR WHAT REASON? It's costing US $2 billion! For what reason are we putting the safety and security of our President at risk? This is not a trip he should be making for the regional danger alone...and this is coming from someone who would rather see him leave office...but he's our President and he does need to be safe regardless of political and idealogical disagreements. On top of this, it's a trip he's canceled TWICE already, so his itinerary may already be out there! Really smart. The hosts may already know his movements and whereabouts. This is extremely risky. According to the White House, he wants to "experience the festival of lights". Hopefully we can impeach him before he loses his election. He and his wife are single-handedly bankrupting us on their vacations and shopping alone. He is just completely out of touch with reality, especially when it comes to economics and responsibility. He thinks he can do anything he wants and won't have any dangers or consequences. Even in the Cold War with Reagan and Gorbechev, we didn't need that many warships. We probably didn't use that many warships in Yalta for the WWII conference with FDR, Chruchhill and Stalin. This man literally thinks he's the most important man in the world at all times. :pffff: |

Well we are currently printing 800 billion more dollars to increase our monitized debt to 2.5 trillion-ish. So that 200 million (or what ever it is) a day will actually be more like 160 million in today's dollar. I would feel the same way no matter who is in office at the time. I do not recall the trip Bush took so I'm guessing it must not have been close to 200 million per day. Isnt GM doing an IPO to the tune of 13 mil in the next few days that is going to payback most of the "taxpayers" money? Check our "predict how low the dow jones will go" thread for how you thought the SM was going to tank and compare that to what really happened? im not saying we are clear of economic troubles but the economy has come a long way in just 2 years. the dems did a poor job of spearheading these mid-term elections. instad of standing by the pres and the bailouts, they tried to distance themselves. that and the large dem voting block that is the 20 somethings dont come out and vote in numbers for the less sexy mid-term elections than they do when they get to vote on a president. now back to hatin ya'll! |

There is NO comparison in cost, timing or overall ridiculousness of the trip. If he wants to see the festival of lights, look on Youtube like the rest of us. The Obama's arrogant spending and lavish vacations/shopping sprees during this recession is only going to create more and more animosity against him. 2012 is a lost cause for him, and his party. For those who like to compare vacations of President Bush and Obama, keep him mind, most of President Bush's vacations were back to his own ranch at no cost (other than required security) and he almost always made them working vacations with foreign leaders coming to meet with him there. We pay for Camp David as a retreat for the President when he needs to get away from the WH. This President refuses to use it, but we're still paying for it, PLUS his excessive travel plans. |

Yup, the guy goes on vacations. There is a reason to can him

I don't expect you to have any understanding or appreciation of "the festival lights" since it's not an American holiday Do you not think that Obama also meets with foreign leaders on his vacations? As Nancy Reagan once said "Presidents don't take vacations, they just have a change of scenery" And what do you mean he never goes to Camp David? He's been there about 8 times the last two years. Maybe it's not the 150 or so times Bush went, but it's not like he never goes |

Most local gov'ts waste a lot less money than you think. In general they are operating at a much higher efficiency than either the states or the federal gov't Remember when they come pick up your trash or you flush the toilet a local gov't is making that happen. I'd be happier if half of my taxes I pay the federal gov't went to my local gov't instead. At least there I can identify more easily what my money gets spent on. Of course I work for a local gov't so my perspective is skewed. But I know in our case there is not a lot of waste. The community around here gets a good level of service for their money. |
