Re: Who Will Be The Redskins 2011 Opening Day Starting QB?
Why the crush on Locker? He never really has impressed me that much, especially this season. Rex wil be the starter come week one no matter what happens or if we draft a QB. We have a firstand second round pick in 2011, I say give Trent Williams some help, and make the scout team work overtime to earn their inflated paychecks. Whoever these guys are, they have been epic failures overall in terms of talent evaluation. I like Trent Williams a lot, but he isn't going to last long or be worth a damn if he keeps having to line up next to a bunch of bums for the next several seasons. Draft some damn guards with the first two picks then go for the best available tackle in the latter rounds. If Mallet is available for our #1, I admit I would be tempted to go for him, but I wouldn't pull the trigger. No matter who our guy is, our line sucks so much that he would be ineffective. Both lines need to be addressed in the offseason, and I would look at a CB and LB. Fletch can't be the man forever.
If we don't develop a QB that can play on a consistent basis then stocking the line with early draft picks is going to produce results similar to that of the 49ers.

As of today they have 3 first round picks, and two early second round picks all drafted by them. Their record is 5-9 in the NFC West.

The best teams are able to find 3rd round picks and beyond and develop them consistently enough that the team not only has a great starting line but enough depth to deal with injuries. The Jets are the only elite team right now that has a line stocked with guys who were 1st rounders, either taken by the Jets or signed as a free agent. Yet their QB has a measly 74 QB rating.

How is that when he has all these great receivers and all day to throw? The fact of the matter is the QB more times then not is the problem. Weather it's a system problem or inability to adjust to the speed of the game problem. The fact remains that if you have a good QB you're at least going to see something.

Aaron Rodgers and Big Ben have lines that at the very least are comparable to ours. Yet they top the league in passing stats year in and year out. Peyton Manning has a line that would make most of you shutter and Brady's line has one measly first round pick.

Despite the McNabb experiments utter failure I still trust that we have a coaching staff that can develop a young signal caller. And history suggest that our odds of stumbling onto a Schuab or even a Romo is very low. You're much better off using the first round to draft a QB. Especially if you think that QB is a great fit for your system and all indications seem to suggest that Locker is a great fit. At the very least Shanahan is impressed with him and in the end thats all that matters.

I might be in the minority but I think we need to drop this idea that we need to stock the line with early draft picks. As of now we probably just need one more 1st or 2nd round pick along the line but beyond that I would rather get a pipeline going of 3rd rounders and beyond on an annual basis like the rest of the leagues elite team and develop a line that way.

I strongly encourage everyone to look at the ESPN depth charts around the league and look at the O-Line depth charts. You'll see where many of the best teams have lines composed of 5th, 6th, 7th, and UDFA's with one or two early round picks serving as the anchors. The real problem with the line up until this point hasn't necessarily been a lack of binging on early round picks (though it had been a problem before Trent came along) but rather an inability to develop late round guys past Heyer.

Above all I don't want to go into 2012 with our hopes hinging on a rookie QB especially if it means passing up a guy that fits our system in 2011.

Re: Who Will Be The Redskins 2011 Opening Day Starting QB?

I think we did a good job addressing a big need in the o-line last year with T. Williams. And one could say that a healthy Jammal Brown could set our team at the tackle position for the next 3 seasons (the LT position has been pretty much set for the rest of T. William's career).

We do need to address the interior line, however I think we could do that with later round picks (i.e. let's get the other Pouncey on the 2nd round, and maybe get a veteran center in FA). We also need to address the interior D-line, which I think we could have addressed by picking up T. Cody in the second round (trade down that is) or Cam Williams in the 3rd round; and we could have bee developing a true NT this year.

If Rex works out as an in-between guy, then we should go after a 1st round QB, let him develop and hopefully have ready to go when Rex gets the ax. Last offseason, I was campaigning for a tackle and we got it, now I feel we need to address the QB position.
I voted Locker, as Smoot keeps saying the shannys dig him alot. Hopefully, this will be the final year we have a draft pick this high in the 1st round, so this is the ideal time to draft a franchise QB.Right now, i'm assuming we have a draft pick no lower than 7, and, if we took a qb that high in the draft, he'd be expected to start opening day.

Although Rex seems like the safe pick, I also think he's in a position to make him the #1 FA QB available. That said, I don't think any team will break the bank for him, so if we want to, we should be able to resign him.

Personally, i think we should trade whatever we have to to get Luck. Seriously, the dudes going to be one of the best QBs ever. I'd trade our 1st and 2nd this year, plus our 1st rounders the next two years to move up 5-6 spots to get him.
Then we can give him the David Carr treatment, leaving him to be savaged behind a subpar O-line. No thanks if it means trading away the top of our draft for the next three years.

Re: Who Will Be The Redskins 2011 Opening Day Starting QB?

Luck is a first overall pick no matter what. Please grasp this guys. I want Luck more then anyone but there is zero chance that we are in position to draft him short of trading our first round picks for the next five years in exchange for the number one overall pick. This guy is bar none the best draft prospect since Peyton Manning. Others come close based on their draft day value but no player will be as highly regarded on draft day as Luck will be.

On top of that the only way to get Luck to come out this year is to have a CBA that allows the current rookie wage system to stay in place for one more year. Other then that it's back to Stanford to try and win a national championship.

Locker is actually better then I thought. The way he runs the offense is actually pretty impressive. Give him a year or two of coaching under Shanahan and we could have something special, especially with his ability to make plays off of play action.

Re: Who Will Be The Redskins 2011 Opening Day Starting QB?

The reason we need to take our quarterback in the first round (if not now, next year) is because it improves his odds at success. Last year, ravens, jets, chargers, colts, bengals, eagles, packers, etc all had first round quarterbacks. I am hesitant to take a wide receiver so high and risk getting burned, because that position is very renown for high round busts, and middle round steals.

I really think people need to forget about Luck. If he comes out, there's almost a certainty he'll go #1 overall. He's the best can't miss prospect of the last decade, and the top of the draft has qb needy teams everywhere except for Detroit. There's no way we get him even if he does come out, and he might not even come out because in recent interviews he's said he wants to try to win a national championship at Stanford and also get his degree before he leaves. There's no way Andrew Luck would fall all the way to where we'll be picking, and I doubt we'd trade up for him either.
Well, there's a problem here because we don't have playmakers offensively. And it's pretty clear Donovan McNabb was at one time among the most talented QBs in the league, but not anymore.

The system seemed to work well in Houston.
Then hopefully we can find the next Matt Schaub in the draft. He was a third rounder, so it's not out of the question.

Carolina likely has that pick. I don't know a lot about them, but they are a smaller mkt & probably not a rich team per se. They may not be too happy w/spending #1 pick money.

If Luck is comin out this year, I wouldn't put it past the Skins to make a play for him. The most encouraging factor in that is that Allen will get a much better deal than vinny would've.

I may be really, really wrong about this but Locker seems a little Shuler-ish for my taste. I don't see him looking down the field, don't see him reading the defense, it's one read and fling or one read and go. His 'speed' will get eaten up at the next level (see Smith, Alex) and I don't see any other elite tools.. Are you seeing the same thing or what's your scouting report?

Yeah but if you think Carolina would rather have a guy like Clausen over Andrew Luck I want what you're smokin. Fox will be gone after the season, and Clausen was Fox's guy. The next coaching staff will feel no obligation to Clausen and I'd bet the next coaching staff will be hired with regards as to who would make the best coach for Luck. The whole point will be moot if Luck goes back to school for next season anyways.

The way I see it is, if Locker didn't do as well this year as last because his team wasn't as good, what does that say about him? He's only as good as his supporting cast. Last I checked, he wouldn't have a good supporting cast in Washington for a couple years.... If we are lucky.

I disagree, in philly history they've been known not to break the bank on a 30 year old player, and Mike Vick will be looking for one thing only next year, a big pay day, i promise he will not be loyal to a team, he still in debt and needs to get back on track in his life by catching up on his bills and im sure he go to the highest bider........ plus he mobile like Shanhan like, plus he is playing his best ball....... dropping, AH, DMC, CP, S.Moss maybe even letting a aging fletcher walk, they wouldn't have to give up draft picks, just make the highest bid for him..... I can see a 6-7 year contract......

They can get Luck in the 1st round, pick up a DT for their 4-3 defense, and another 2nd.

We would get a yound promie QB, 3rd round pick, and pick up some good talent in our top 10 pick?

1. Why do you want Claussen?

2. When Skins traded for McNabb, they tried to get Philly to expand the deal and take Haynesworth off their hands. That was BEFORE all of the drama of the 2010 season. Philly - - ever so politely - - declined. So, what makes you think Haynesworth would be an asset in your proposed trade that would hold such value?

3. If Luck is in the draft, the team with the #1 pick will take him. They are not going to trade out of that slot.

Bulger also might be a decent veteran option but I'd like to see a rookie with a reclamation project. Either our very own John Beck or Alex Smith. Marc Bulger if they want another veteran because Palmer is going to be looking for a decent chunk of change coming off a $100 million contract, not to mention all but a guarantee to start.
