If you're just looking for best QB prospect available at no. 10, scheme be damned, Ponder is probably the best bet. But no one is taking Ponder that high because he has questions about his physical tools and durability, and no one wants to consider a "damaged goods" quarterback that high.

But if you're looking just at an elite guy with the entire package, and deeming everything else (average starter, for example) to be a failure, Ponder makes sense at no. 10. If he stays really healthy, he could develop into a top ten NFL QB.
Go find your own bandwagon!

If I were Cam Newton, I would follow Tebow's lead & start working w/a QB coach that can fine tune my footwork & mechanics. Maybe that's not as viable a project to work on w/1 person like Tebow did w/his throwing motion, but just by doing something other than working out, it would up his stock.

He could get his dad to hire a qb coach. :)
Go find your own bandwagon!
Bah!

I'm not suggesting we take Christian Ponder at no. 10. I'm saying it makes sense under the "epic success or bust" philosophy at quarterback because 1) Gabbert will be gone by 10, and 2) There aren't a lot of true believers in Locker/Newton/Mallett as elite players. I think people believe in them as potential starters in a weak class.

As for me, I'm not a buyer in the "you need an epic quarterback to compete" philosophy. Teams need to do a lot of things well to compete, that happens to just be one of the few that isn't below everyone's radar. But competent quarterbacks are absolutely everywhere, and that doesn't fit with the narrative about "winners" and such. Competent quarterbacks can appear to be either winners or losers. Just that the "losers" can be acquired much, much cheaper.

After watching Newton's workout yesterday I'm convinced that this man wants to be the best he can be. And he looked damn good too. I know it's alot easier when there's not an actual pass rush, however he looked remarkable. I just hope he's still there at number 10 when we pick.

Indeed, currently Warren Moon is working with him. He's also trying to cajole Farve into assisting as well, which Farve said he would. But we all know how lazy Brett is during the off-season so who knows. Hopefully that will change now he's retired.

Aftere watching him work out on TV, you were able to discern what is in his mind and his level of motivation? :nono:

Actually yes, how else am I able to evaluate an athelete I don't personally know? If you can direct me as to how I can forumulate a sound opinion devoid of any visual or printed media then I'm all ears.

Did you bother to listen to his interview? Did you bother to listen to the details about the amount of work he's putting into his off season regimen? Based on what I heard and observed, his actions convinced me that this kid wants to be the best he can be.

If this regime drafts Newton (which I don't think they will), then you can throw the next 5-6 years out of the window.

At the very least Russell didn't have even close to the charisma that you get with a guy like Newton. Still I don't know how Russell was looked at in terms of preparation going into the draft but everything I've heard about Newtons prep and ability to accept coaching is very good. Not Peyton Manning good but certainly enough to warrant a closer look while not worrying to much about him getting lazy after payday.

I can't wait for the team to go to Dalton's Pro Day so When my banwagon thread gets started I can get all excited too about how he's the best QB out there and how he has the most potential. ;)

For the last time. We're not going to make Charlie Frye our franchise QB. I'm sorry did I say Charlie Frye I meant to say Andy Dalton :D

Yeah well I tell you what if them TCU fellars done be in the SEC they done would have been like negative 18 and twelve. SEC done be the best conference from top to bottom. Vanderbilt would win the PAC 10 with ease never mind TCU's cute little wanna be college conference. Yes sire I tell you what.

You've spent waaaay too much time in Georgia. Despite my alma mater, I'm not a southerner, but if I was I'd be offended. :)

But admit it, if TCU was in the SEC, they certainly wouldn't have 12-0/11-1 type records the past few years. 10-2/9-3 is definitely possible, but not this undefeated stuff.

Oh I have no mistake, I absolutely detest the concept of SEC fans, not to mention the conference itself. I respect the conference as the best in college football but not by the gap that "SEC fans" seem to create between themselves and the Pac 10/Big XII/Big 10. Scud knows this very well.

As for Dalton, I just can't jump on board yet. He's a spread QB (which I don't necessarily hold against any QB to much) that doesn't have great physical tools. I don't know about his football IQ either as I can't find a scout thats been able to talk about it in detail.

What I see when I look at Dalton is a mid round spread QB with average physical tools all the while knowing little if anything about his football IQ. And even though I respect TCU for going out looking for tough games only to be turned down time and time again (allegedly a handful of SEC teams along with numerous others turned down frequent request to have TCU travel to play them) the fact is the only teams they did end up playing weren't to impressive until they beat Wisconsin.

Wouldn't mind acquiring a guy like him as an insurance policy "QB of the future" with a more touted prospect on board (a la a Gus Ferrote to compliment a Heath Schuler) but I just can't trust the franchises future at its most important position with what I see as an average prospect being the best option (even the Falcons had Michael Vick when they drafted Matt Schuab). As of now the only Mid round QB I have any confidence in is Ponder and even he makes me nervous.

And you're right I have spent to much time in the South.

If I was a GM and was looking for a QB I wouldn't even attend the pro day workouts.

Sure it's useful if you want to get a look at a LB prospect, but evaluating a QB in a choreographed rehearsal is close to useless and is probably one of the reasons these talent evaluating clowns are always blowing it on bust QB's.

That's one of the reasons I am pretty intrigued by Jake Locker. Go watch the guy play in real lives games against the pro farm team USC over the last two years.

Thats how I evaluate college QB's.

JaMarcus Russell had the best workout that the scouts had ever seen. Not saying. Just saying.

I'm going on record and saying that whoever picks sCam Newton in the first round is going to be set back 3-5 years. Said the same thing about Tebow, and Vince Young too.

The Best Qbs probably are not even the big names in this one. I was wrong about Bradford, and maybe wrong about Cam, but damn, he only started one year, in one of the weaker years for SEC football IMHO. On top of that, the off the field crap only makes me wonder about his work ethic, and what he will do when he isn't handed everything on a silver platter right off the bat.

Andy Dalton looks like a good overall guy and QB. He has the tools minus the off the field question marks. His work ethic is pretty strong. The work ethic is why I am down on taking a chance with Cam. Plus, like JC, Cam had one hell of a team behind him in a rather weak year for the SEC. Other than really Bama and Auburn, with LSU tagging behind, the SEC wasn't as strong as usual.

They're two very different QB's. Only real similarities are they played at Auburn and they're both black. Outside of that they're not too comparable. Different systems (west coast vs spread), different personalities (introverted vs extroverted), and different styles of play (pocket vs mobile). On top of that they're different in how they project to the NFL. Newton is looked at as a low floor high ceiling prospect, while Campbell was looked at as a medium to high floor, low ceiling type prospect.

It's like saying that Heath Schuler, Rick Clausen, and Peyton Manning are similar players because they all played at Tennessee. I'll admit it's hard not to compare Newton to Campbell simply because of the two similarities I listed but they really are quite different.

I didn't say they'd be similar. I'm just saying is Newton going to really be any better. That meaning, will he ever become an average NFL starter. I just don't see it and I hope we don't draft him.

I don't know about will be better b/c i'm not into the prediction thing.
But, Cam is a better prospect then Campbell.
Cam has a stronger arm, quicker cleaner more compact throwing motion, greater mobility , greater athleticism, greater playmaking.
Also Cam comes off as much more confident.

Bills are probably going to take him. They already run a spread system and are in desperate need for a face of the franchise. Plus if you want to have any hope of beating the Pats your best chance is to find a quality QB. Otherwise hope that you can find a defensive genius that can find 20 guys that fit his system.
