Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I'll agree I think we drastically need zone blocking OL help but lately I've sat back thinking we probably should take QB next if the team still sees someone on the board they liked or perhaps NT. Taking NT would hopefully fix our defensive woes, if the QB's they were interested in are gone then look to resolve the OL and maybe pick up a late round WR, CB, and RB.
I'd really like to see us be able to add both Rodney Hudson and Paea with our two second rounders. That or trade out of one of the seconds for a third plus extras. |

It seems like they favor Wisenski over Hudson if they decide to go that way. |

I just want us to draft one of those guys. No preference, just get a Rabach replacement. If we do, then getting a QB will become a smarter choice too. I do not want Andy Dalton to be lost in the preseason to a broken ankle inflicted by his Center. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I agree. Great job by the front office. Solid pass rusher with high character/high motor. My only concern is Kerrigan played end in a 4-3. They're going to ask him to play OL in a 3-4. That didn't work with Andre Carter so this concerns me. But can't complain too much about moving down and getting a 2nd rounder plus filling a need. That was a steal.
Almost all 3-4 OLBs in the league(successful or not) played DE, like Suggs. How many colleges actually run the 3-4? |

Well done sir. But you could have easily gone with " With all due respect, you're a feckin' idiot. Well bless your heart, you must have been dropped on your head as a child." |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
F - I think Shanny made a big mistake in passing on Gabbert and picking an undersized defensive end in hopes of converting him to an outside linebacker. There are already at least two failed attempts on the current roster of converting defensive ends to linebacker. Since Shanny passed on a quarterback, I would rather seen him get a shutdown cornerback, Prince Amukamara. The Giants got him and the Skins are going to pay twice a year.
at least 2 failed attempts? who? |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Lot of talk radio is saying that! "Did we not just draft a younger Andre Carter?"
The difference I see here is that Carter was a tried and true failure at the position in two different locations. It's unfair to compare when we haven't yet seen Kerrigan atempt to master the position. I'm confident the team is reasonably sure the transition can be made and because they released Carter and drafted Kerrigan is sufficient enough for me to believe their intention is not to repeat the same mistake. |

Old article, but for those who are concerned about his transition to the 3-4, read this excerpt:
Some teams think he's athletic enough to play standing up as an outside 3-4 linebacker. I see him as a 4-3 end. To help prepare for a possible transition, Kerrigan spent time working on linebacker drills and did some at the Purdue pro day last week.
|

Kerrigan will be fine. |

Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I just hope Haslett is finally smart enough to move Lorenzo Alexander to ILB next to London. If so and with the addition of Kerrigan, we will no longer be ranked near the bottom against run like we were last year. If we replace Golsten with a legit NFL 3-4 DE that will complete our transition into being a good 3-4 defense. I still see Golsten as the weak link. He is a good back up and good as a pass rusher, but weak against the run.
3-4 defensive linemen have to be able to stop the run or else catastrophe like 2010. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
For me, the real wildcard is Jeremy Jarmon. He's battled injuries and losing/gaining weight (per team request). Will he finally step up as a factor this year?

Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
The trade down is crucial--we need live bodies, especially on D.
As for Kerrigan, I like what I've read, but, as with any pick, there are no sure things. Given what we know today (and that's all that we can take into account here), it's an A. (And, to be honest, I'm just glad we didn't shit the bed as we have so often in the recent past. We did the obvious thing. Trade down in a deep draft and pick up help for our woeful D. It's an A for the skins. Just being normal is awesome!) |

Something about draft day that can revive that old fan magic and make you a believer all over again.

Amen brother, Amen.. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I gave it a B. Kerrigan is a starter for sure, just wish we were in a 4-3 to use him in. I still rather have Orakpo and now Kerrigan play the position the were drafted in.

Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
lets just wait and see........... AJ Hawk, was suppose to be a stud, and he is a sub par player.......... they got it right with Clay Matthews, but he is rare..... there arent many clays out there.

Hawk a sub par player? Really? Do you watch football? Maybe he doesn't get sacks, but he's pretty darn good in coverage and makes tackles from sideline to sideline. I'd take him in the middle in the Skins D any day. |

AJ Hawk was affected by the transition to the 3-4 but still was able to adjust a bit. Put in as a 4-3 LB and I think he'd be much better. Ppl tend to dismiss how much scheme can affect a player effectiveness. |

Hawk is an ILB. Kerrigan an OLB. Cannot compare the two. |

Worse case scenario Kerrigan did play a good amount of LDE in college so if we switch to the 4-3 again we'll be able to put him opposite Orakpo. Still I remember last year people were saying we were a 4-3 team trying to run a 3-4. Now I look at the moves they made, Drafting Perry Riley last year, trading for Cariker last year, Signing OJ, drafting Kerrigan to play OLB, getting Jenkins to play the nose. I'd say we are now officially dealing with 3-4 personnel. Oh yeah, and if Kemo is recovered from his achilies then thats another 3-4 guy. |

Now we have two young NTs (Bryant, who had a good end of the season), I'd like us to get a veteran healthy NT if there is one available out there. I do think we are in better shape for the 3-4 now, hopefully now we can focus on the offense in free agency (and hopefully we can find some gems in the next couple of rounds. |

Man I love to hear that ... can never have too many great character guys in the locker room especially if he translates and becomes a stud at the next level. He would be an awesome influence in the locker room for younger guys coming in. |

im sure you would, thats why Green Bay was trying to dump him for a cheese burger and fries.......... right? you take him! |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
I gave it a "B". At first, I thought that among all of the defensive needs, another pass rusher was a bit further down the list.
But then you have to consider: Orakpo is getting held practically the entire game, and if he's not getting pressure to the QB, then we're not getting pressure on the QB. The coaches obviously saw that. So sometimes even one great pass rusher isn't quite enough. During the glory years it was Mann and Manley -- hopefully Rak and Ryan can come somewhere close to that. |
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
AJ Hawk is more like a Brady James than anything else

Compared to Rocky McIntosh? Hell yeah. We have to find a replacement for that bum. Still, there's a fairly solid consensus is that Hawk has been a bit of a letdown. |

F ing Jamie Dukes just said on on the NFL Network that Ryan Kerrigan was a BAD PICK. WHAT?!?!
|
Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
Fug Jamie Dukes.
This kid smashed Michigan last year. He had 10 solo tackles, including 5 for losses with 4 sacks, two fumbles forced and one recovered. I think he'll be aight. |

Re: Redskins Made Smart Choice With Kerrigan
On a team that needs a tackling machine, someone with good fundamentals, this kid fills that need. He had a lot of tackles for losses, which is a good thing.

So quick question. Who do you guys got. Kerrigan vs the Field (any one of the 11 other rookies)?
