Gross, and stupid.

These weather reporters out in the elements are so dumb. We get it, it's raining, it's windy. I can look out my window to see that. I don't need some dumbass standing outside to get an idea of how bad the storm is.

I was watching the reporting during the storm....it's comical stuff. I guess is it was my job I would search for things to make it seem...worse or more dramatic to make it more interesting, appealing?
Funny....

Agreed. I enjoy watching them get battered around. Serves 'em right. I was laughing out loud last night at the reporters that were wearing goggles out there.

That pic is about 2 or 3 miles from my house. Its south of the james right before the nickel bridge. Its a pretty nice area with mainly old houses that have slate roofs so I guess that was part of it. I think the Richmond area has 70% power outages. I just drove around the fan, vcu, and the southside and there are tons of trees down.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)

We didn't get anything bad here, the "worst" part of it was 40 mph winds whipping the trees around and very minor rain spraying everywhere. I could post of pic of some leaves lying in the street so you guys get the idea but I think you guys already get it by now. That was a very weak storm, the power never went out except for a couple minor restarts last night. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Also, that reporter is retarded. He's basically covered in ass juice. What was he thinking? No update is worth that.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)

I know I am safe in the Detroit area, but the way they covered Irene was like it was Andrew or going to be like Katrina. Most of the deaths were because of sheer stupidity, and the damage done to the DC area was akin to a very bad string of thunderstorms or tornado it sounds like. Bloomberg wanted NYC to evacuate, now they are going to open NYSE and the US Open is set to go. The media needs to get its shit together. I know in the 24/7 news cycle demands stuff, but more people could have been hurt if sheer panic were to take over.

MTK 08-28-2011 06:56 PM

I've got no power, lots of trees down and flooding in the area.

I will never date a woman named Irene. Spent all day today cleaning up the debris and yard left by her mess.

Here are a few pics from the area. Let me know if you can't see them. I have the access level set to public though.

That looks really bad Mattyk. Vermont got owned too. It's funny, people here are talking about how the hurricane is overhyped because it wasn't that bad locally. They fail to realize dozens of people died, over 7B in damages and 5M power outages.

Yeah I really don't understand people b*tching about this "overhype." People should be thankful if nothing happened to them and that they were prepared for the worst.

it was a lot worse in richmond than most anticipated. no power at anyone's house i know right now except my sisters. I have 2 neighbors where trees have come through their roofs. its alot more damage than expected.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)

Heres a pic of my neighbor across the street 2 doors down (it hit the persons house next to him). There is TONS of this around Richmond. Fortunately we didnt really get any real flooding. Theres a 1 foot wide by 40 foot tree that is suspended by power lines i have to drive under to get out of neighborhood . Ive done it 3 times now and i cringe each time.

One thing that is quite remarkable is how fast the clean up has been. Yesterday morning there were a lot of tree like this blocking roads, by the evening the majority of them got cleaned up.

Im still without power. At least half of the people i work with are also without power. Sucks. Ive heard Dominion is supposed to come out with a timeline later today.

Yeah a lot of places in my area got hit really hard with flooding. I don't live too far from VT and they got hammered. We had some recent storms so the ground was already soaked. All this rain just had nowhere to go.

I agree, this storm wasn't overhyped. Maybe for some areas it was, but in general it's better to be safe than sorry, especially considering what happened with Katrina.

I'm sorry for the damage to your communities, guys.

And yes, when it comes to hurricanes it is far better to be overhyped than underhyped.

Obviously loss of life is the heart wrenching and by far the worst thing that happened, especially that 11 year old kid from va beach. I also feel terrible for all the people that lost their homes or had property damage or money they loose from not being able to work or having to throw all their food away. But i also hate seeing a lot of these huge really nice mature trees come down, especially considering how many of them fell.

So do you know how your parents cottage did through the storm and looks like its going to be some time before they get the road back open? Our place from the photos sent from our neighbor looks to have no damage but I cannot see all of the roof.

We got hit pretty hard and lost three really big trees. One fell into my neighbors yard and the other two are in the back of our lot so I can cut them up a little each weekend. I have several buddies who want some for fire wood so we will cut it up and rent a splitter.

There are always some locals that are hardheaded. They ignore the mandatory evacuation and stay in there homes. I can (somewhat)understand staying in your home and looking after your own property, but getting in your van and sightseeing during while it's hitting you? I'm wondering if they are truly locals or people that moved here and have little to no experience with hurricanes.

Most locals I know that have places at the beach don't hang around. The move inland until the storm passes.

That's usually the norm with surfers. They like to take advantage of the big waves prior to the storm rolling through. Most are smart enough to get out of dodge before it arrives though. I emphasize "most"....lol

Its not gud apparently. He talk to a guy this morning who had to evacuate the same place and hes gonna drop his boat in sound side today and boat up to the area. He told dad no one is allowed in on hatteras island because 12 is gone and the beach and sound meet across the land in 5 diffent areas. He told my father Manteo got f*cked up bad and Avon, which is bout 15 miles north of Rondathe, got jack up too. Expect a minimum of flood damage.

Back in my surfing days i went out in some pretty nasty seas. I remember on day going out and the waves where hitting the top of the fishing piers. By the time we got out and realized how stupid it was and went back in we had drifted 2 1/2 miles down the beach. That was stupid.

I took my backup propane tank to get re-filled so I'd have 2 tanks to cook with in case of a power loss. (meat, meat and more meat) My grill has a sideburner for boiling water too.

I have a huge case of bottled water in the attic for emergencies.

Ended up with about 3 inches of rain, some tame 30 MPH gusts and loss of power for a morning. Dodged it all. Just some leaves to sweep off the deck.

Family on LI also got a lot less than expected.

Hope everyone here was and is safe.

Coincidentally, my newborn daughter's (born 2 weeks ago) middle name is IRENE. I was born during a tornado in MD that took out the bridge to the hospital too. :D

Sounds like everyone is doing well for the most part. Just got power back at about 5am. Had the generator running, but it only keeps about 35% of the house up. Fortunately no damage to my neighborhood, some flooding but it's all receeded already.

Those are incredible photos in the link posted above. Wow.

I had turned on Dish Earth (Dish Network has a 24-hr view of the earth from a space satellite) and I could clearly see the hurricane as it was approaching NC. It was HUGE. Amazing view.
