I agree that we could have moved more quickly on Lowery and/or Pool but I don't question the FO for not retaining Landry or Atogwe. Landry has missed far more games than he's played the past two seasons and has bucked team medical advice. Right or wrong, that would raise questions of loyalty and responsibility to me, not to mention long term durability.

For Atogwe, he was rarely healthy, coming off of a couple of seasons where he was less than 100% healthy as well. Also, when he played his performance was subpar.

If we were responsible for '2 of the 5 best safeties on the market' as you stated, that has a lot to say about the quality of the market and not much bad to say about us.
I can say that the decision to not slap the Franchise Tag on Landry raised a LOT of eyebrows across the league. I mean, it's one thing to determine the safeties are the main reason we had poor pass defense (I don't disagree -- particularly when Landry was out), it's another thing to fear a player in the prime of his career so much you let him walk for nothing. He's damaged goods, so he's probably not going to get guaranteed money in excess of $8 million, but still. With all the options the Redskins had to keep Landry around, it's safe to say they would have released him even if he had a year left on his contract.

The way we as fans felt when Eric Winston got cut? That's how other teams felt when Landry didn't get the tag.

Atogwe was the kind of guy who you don't cut if you don't like the market, but move on from if you have a better option.

I do think they view Meriweather more of a Landry replacement than an Atogwe replacement.

A lot of the Landry issue comes down to who you trust to recommend the best interest of his future: Landry and his doctors, or the Redskins and their doctors. I know a lot of teams with medical staffs who would be very happy to get their hands on our 'problem' at a medical discount.

If people are this fed up with the team then maybe is time to seek another team to follow. And I try to say that in the most respectable way. In my opinion I have seen worst decisions made by this team in the past (McNabb, Haynesworth, TJ Duckett, Spurrier, Archuleta, etc., etc.) But if signing Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, and Brandon Merriweather are what cause fans to boil and lose it...then maybe nothing the team will do satisfy you. Just my humble opinion.

Although I will admit that I have no season tickets, so I don't have a lot of money invested/tied to this team. So maybe that changes my perception.

Merriweather is simply another stop gap saftey. If a late round gem is found in this year's draft, he'll be replaced. If not, June 1st cuts or next year's off-season may yield a better option.

Oh right...so you're aware of all the interest in LL how then?

C'mon dude, let's hope Meriweather can turn things around here w/ a great DB coach. My assumption is Morris has significant input on our secondary now, so he probably thinks Meriweather can do something here. Let's give them both a shot.

I like that Mike Shanahan is decisive. I neither know nor care why MS doesn't want Atogwe and Landry on his team. If Mike decides that a player should go, then I'm fine with his getting rid of that player and moving on to someone else as quickly as he can. I trust his judgement. You apparently don't.

It seems to me that you don't think that Redskins management is performing their due diligence and making well-reasoned judgments and decisions about players. I do.

I think that they have a plan that they are executing in a professional manner. We'll know soon enough if the plan works. That's really all I care about.

Next season, Mike will be judged on wins and losses and not on individual player transactions. It's his job to build a winner and it's strictly a pass/fail test based on how many wins Dan Snyder considers acceptable.

But yes, I also believe how you build your team in the offseason is only a little bit related to who wins the big game at the end of the year, so if he comes out like the game coach he was in 2005 and wins 10 games, no one -- least of which myself -- will care how good or bad the defense was.

If his gamble is he can outscore everyone he plays, he has more than enough clout to make the gamble. He just has to win it.

It did?

It was no big secret the tag was going to be put on Davis or LL, and most were leaning toward it being Davis.

And if he is such a premium player, why is he still on the market?

would love to see Brandon Meriweather bounce back to his earlier form a few years ago. Hopefully, he will learn not to freelance so much, allowing big pass plays to happen. That was the knock on him from what I remember. I for one really like Landry but it didn't seem that he really wanted to be in DC and didn't like how he wasn't listening to the doctors.

He's picking from four teams, Meriweather had just two visits.

Mario Williams signed today, but that doesn't mean I'd take Frostee Rucker over him, who signed yesterday.

I had hope for him since the redskins drafted him. The times I liked Landry's performances though were- when he was playing with Sean Taylor and in the games he played in 2010. There doesn't seem to be a lot of options in fa or the draft for a redskins problem position(s).

Yeah lets not forget, the second best saftey to come through Washington, since Ken Houston, was supposedly a bust. Ryan Clark has been one of the best free safteys in the league, since the year he played for us.

I look at the Giants and Green Bay, neither have great secondaries but very good to great front 7's. If we resign Fletcher I think our front 7 is pretty good. Riley is coming along, add in Jenkins if healthy and every players 2nd year in this defense. We just need some young guys to come along and our defense will be fine. Gomes was a rookie last season, he is gonna surprise some people this season.

I like the signing of Brandon Meriweather, this might be his "last chance" at a nice contract. If he returns to form he can get 15-20 million more before his career is over, if not he is a minimum salary guy for the rest of his days.

We're 2 days into free agency and still have the draft. I don't think they're done addressing the secondary yet.
We're 2 days into free agency and still have the draft. I don't think they're done addressing the secondary yet.
It's hard to believe they would be at least. But if you look at the salary structure of the deals, it's clear to me that the only priority they have remaining is: No. 3 WR. After that, it's all bargain hunting.

Last year, they abstained from bargain hunting entirely (unless you count Sav Rocca). A function of the condensed offseason, perhaps?

EDIT - forgot MLB obviously. Must think they'll get Fletcher locked up if they're not bringing in a replacement.

He had really good back to back coverage seasons. I can't remember if they were 2007-2008, 2008-2009, or 2009-2010, but he was a no. 1 CB in this league for a bit.

There is no market right now for Fletcher. According to the ES insiders, they are about 2mil apart right now, but Fletch doesn't have any leverage since there really is no market for him.

Also, don't forget about the draft and June 1st cuts.

Meriweather wouldn't have been my 1st choice but it fills a need with a starting caliber player.
Meriweather has the skillset that once made him a pro-bowl Safety.
But his performance of late has not lived up to his talent.
Hopefully Meriweather has decided to re-focus and Raheem Morris can be a catalyst?
If so then the signing would be a steal.
But, even if Meriweather is merely average he fills a need at a fair cost.
My FA Safety list would look like this:
Reggie Smith, Corey Lynch, Brandon Meriweather, Craig Steltz, Haruki Nakamura, Zbikowski, Atari Bigby
If he's a week one starter, we're in trouble. But if he's still starting in Week 17, then its probably a good signing.

Decent buy low opportunity, but I'm caught wondering what 'plan A' is.
Deep breaths everyone. How many games did Atogwe and Landry miss last year and where did the Defense rank at the end of the year? The biggest thing that could benefit the Defense would be a halfway decent Offense that doesn't turn the ball over, can control the clock and give the Defense a chance to play with the lead. Every team has holes and the Redskins are no exception. Giants had a crappy running game and the Pats had a crappy Defense. So what?

There is still the draft and free agent signings will happen through the summer. O-line did fine last year despite injuries. Besides, with a rookie QB, we will still be in rebuild mode next year.

Re: Redskins Sign S Brandon Meriweather

Not particularly crazy about this head case Meriweather.
A great pass rush and many sacks will cure a weak defensive backfield. Kerrigan will help. Orakpo needs to step up fulfill his potential. He played very undisciplined at times last year. It also seemed like Orakpo played worse as the year went on, which was a major disappointment.
Amazing that we can now say $2M is a small salary.
I am really tired of the salary cap. I wish it would go away. It destroys good teams.
