There is no real advantage to having gained access to the schedule days or even weeks earlier than now. The teams are in constant flux. What goes into it from ESPN's end? From the story, it sounds like ESPN puts in requests for what games it wants, and then the NFL decides who gets what games. Also, not sure if you can answer this, but does the NFL decide on the weekly schedule first and then decide what games will be the primetime matchups? |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
ESPN can request games, so can NFLN and NBC for Sunday Nights.
You'd think the games would go to the highest bidders. I think the league prefers the week's premier game to be on Sunday Nights, but ESPN does pay MUCH more per game than the other networks. Monday Night Football match-ups have not been great for a few years, so apparently the league is getting its way no matter how much someone spends for game rights. ESPN pays $112,500,000 per game in a $1.9 billion per season deal. NBC, Fox and CBS pay just over $1 billion each season. |

Taking into account various factors. There is a lot of back and forth with ESPN and the league (and indirectly the other networks). For example, let's say the NFL tells NBC we want that Bucanneers vs. Falcons game in early October because ESPN working on renewing a deal with the cable affiliate in Tampa and we want to apply some pressure marketing and heavy advertising in October, then the NFL will come back to ESPN and say "that Ravens game you wanted in November, NBC wants that now in exchange for giving you the Tampa game." Or Fox could say we've got no room on the schedule for a 1pm Dolphins game and Miami doesn't want it at 4pm because the Heat are already playing at home and traffic would be a mess, so the NFL puts them on the road that week and so on. Ultimately, it's what the NFL wants to do. But there is a lot of back and forth negotiating. There are also contractual obligations regarding prime time games. Some that are known, like max number of prime time games for each team. Others that are not as well known, such as geographic obligations. |

Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Ross Tucker was talking about scheduling and he threw out some numbers, like computers churn out 40000 scenarios initially, then through additional criteria and stuff the number gets down to around 150 schedule scenarios that are individually mulled over until the final version is chosen. Does that sound about right SS? and if that is a 16 game season, how in the world do the other leagues with 100+ games per team per season, get their schedules made. Sounds like nightmares!

From ESPN's end, there are no computer simulated scenarios. It's all people operated. And yes, 100+ game seasons are insane. Tennis is particularly difficult. At ESPN in particular, there are specific teams of people assigned to various sports as well as news and info. So everybody will work on their own schedules and casually interact with other sport teams. Then every Tuesday morning, we'd have a free for all meeting. Well not a free for all per se, but it can get intense. "I have to schedule an NBA doubleheader this Friday. But I have to put a NASCAR race on ESPN2 at 9pm. But PBA bought 2 hours of time for a bowling tournament. But I have to get 18 hours of tennis programming in this week and 55% has to be on ESPN or ESPN2. But we're expecting the NFL to make their announcement this Friday night so we have to be prepared to go all night with SportsCenter. And so on. Lot of "fun" to work through all the scenarios. |

How tough was it when you got something basically set in stone like Skins vs Cowboys for a Monday night, and then Jerrah calls back and says "I just signed Nickleback for a 5 night stand at Jerryworld for all the douchebags in Dallas, its basically our adopted hometown band. I must change the Monday night game b/c of this conflict." Is it back to the drawing board or do you tell Jerry to go to hell? Or do you try to score some Nickleback tickets? |

Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Bumping this thread rather than starting a new one. With preseason games over I wanted to look over the schedule again and predict wins/losses based on what we've seen so far. Here we go:
Week 1 at New Orleans: The Saints will play a very emotional game based on the off-season crap and recent storms. I expect us to get demolished week 1 but won't take it too hard. Loss Week 2 at St. Louis: Win Week 3 vs Cincinnati: Win Week 4 at Tampa: Win Week 5 vs Atlanta: Loss Week 6 vs Minnesota: Win Week 7 at NY Giants: Loss Week 8 at Pittsburgh: Loss Week 9 vs Carolian: Win Week 10: Bye Week 11 vs Philly: Win Week 12 at Dallas: Loss Week 13 vs NY Giants: Win Week 14 vs Ravens: Loss Week 15 at Cleveland: Win Week 16 at Philly: Loss Week 17 vs Dallas: Win So I have us going 9-7 and think I was pretty conservative i.e. we should win those games. Maybe we eek out another win or two, which would be very impressive. 8-8 won't make me surly, but below .500 would be inexcusable given our roster talent and schedule. Who's next? |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Week 1 at New Orleans: I think the Saints come out emotional, but the Skins D holds at first, and the lack of the Head Coach/play caller lets us keep it close. We open with a late Win
Week 2 at St. Louis: Win Week 3 vs Cincinnati: Win Week 4 at Tampa: Win Week 5 vs Atlanta: Loss Week 6 vs Minnesota: Loss Ponder and Peterson put on a nice display, while we RGIII is going through some tough lessons Week 7 at NY Giants: Win Giants begin there mid season drift, and Bob shows Osi his speed Week 8 at Pittsburgh: Loss Week 9 vs Carolina: Loss Can't quite handle the running qb yet Week 10: Bye Week 11 vs Philly: Loss See Carolina Week 12 at Dallas: Win Dallas will be in full meltdown by now. Romo out, McGee (3rd string) starting. Week 13 vs NY Giants: Win Fans are starting to get the bandwagon going Week 14 vs Ravens: Loss Bandwagon falls apart LOL Week 15 at Cleveland: Win Week 16 at Philly: Loss Ugh Week 17 vs Dallas: Loss Dallas saves face keeps us out of wildcard 8-8 from me. |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Losing both games against Philly? Vick isn't in his prime anymore, by time it rolls around that we play them, I'd be surprised if he hasn't suffered at least 1 injury of some sort. The Eagles remind me of the Red Sox this season, stacking talent and for some reason never getting their act together.
We'll win at least one of those games. |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Week 1 at New Orleans: Emotional game for the Saints and they're arguably the best team we play this year. LOSS
Week 2 at St. Louis: Bradford meet RG3. WIN Week 3 vs Cincinnati: I'd say we actually compare favorably to the Bengals.. Close game, but we end up winning. WIN Week 4 at Tampa: We're better. WIN Week 5 vs Atlanta: Matty Ice along with White and Jones absolutely destroy our secondary. LOSS Week 6 vs Minnesota: No Joe Webb this year. WIN Week 7 at NY Giants: Split. LOSS Week 8 at Pittsburgh: Brown, Wallace and Sanders will destroy our secondary. LOSS Week 9 vs Carolian: Newton completely dumbied us last year. Will it change? LOSS Week 10: Bye Week 11 vs Philly: Split. LOSS Week 12 at Dallas: Split. LOSS Week 13 vs NY Giants: Split. WIN Week 14 vs Ravens: A far superior team. LOSS Week 15 at Cleveland: Easiest win of the season. WIN Week 16 at Philly: Split. WIN Week 17 vs Dallas: Split. WIN |

Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
If wanted to, you could pretty much figure our schedule out for the next 20 years.
Each year all the teams of a division play all the teams of two other divisions - one in the AFC and one the NFC (so we will play every team in the league at least once every three years). It simply rotates by division. The only two teams on our schedule that aren't predetermined are the NFC teams from the "off" divisions. Those teams are determined by finish (firsts play firsts, seconds play seconds, etc.). So for example, next year since we play the entire NFC Central, we will play the first place finishers in the NFC West and NFC South. ;) |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
how is home/away decided?
|
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
how is home/away decided?
I'm not exactly sure how the home and away is scheduled other than because you play all 4 teams in the other 2 divisions, you will play 2 of them at home and two away in each case. Then obviously for the two teams that finished in the same place as you (say 1st place teams) you get one at home and one away. That's 5 home and 5 away = 10 games, the other 6 games are the 3 homes againts your division and 3 aways = 16 games. |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Just alternates. Look at the schedule. We played GB and Minn home in 2010, will play them away in 2013 and home again in 2016. Same for AFC but that is on an eight year rotation (4 Divisions to play as opposed to 3) - so this year we play Baltimore and Cinci home and, in 2016, we will play them away, then home again in 2020.
The "off" Division rivals rotate home and away in the years we do not play their division. This year we play the similarly ranked NFC West team (Rams) away, next year we will play the similarly ranked NFC West team at home (Niners on Monday night!), and the following year we play the entire division with Arizona and St. Louis home. (Away, Home, Division, Away, Home, Division). |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
So, in the course of 7 years, a fan can see every team in the league play in the home stadium at least once.
Also, I was wrong in my earlier post, it takes 4 years - not 3 - to play every team in the league. |
Re: 2012 Redskins Schedule Released Today
Before the season, I was dreading the stretch of schedule we're entering now.
After the Vikings game, it was supposed to be a daunting task. Suddenly, it looks, well, "not so bad". I'm not saying it will be easy but these teams that were supposed to be contenders are looking very vulnerable and are really struggling. We might just have an amazing run coming up: Giants - we can do this! Steelers - suddenly a .500 team that looks like they are aging and their run is over Panthers - horrible. Eagles - Vick has become a turnover machine and they can't win games they should win. Cowboys - seem to be choking earlier than usual. Dez is starting to cause issues. Giants - above Ravens - solid but a few huge injuries this week. Browns - playing everyone tough but this is still a 1-win team. Eagles - above Cowboys - above I can see us finishing above .500. Say we split the division games, I can see us winning more than half of the Browns, Panthers, Ravens and Steelers games. I could see us winning all but that Ravens game maybe. 9-7 is looking very possible. We could be contending for a wild card but I'm not sure we can do that...the NFC has so many good teams this year. |
