There is much hope to be gleaned from this prospect, although it does leave RG3 open to more potential injury scenarios
Even though we have a quality backup it would be a mistake to depend on the option because of the high injury risk. I think it could be used effectively as long as RG3 is not taking a lot of hits. |

If he chooses not to for whatever reason perhaps someone who knows him can get his sources. I'm interested in reading the actual person's(s) take who saw Cousins out-playing RG3 in 7 on 7. |

I agree. If you're going to put information like that out there, the least you can do is back it up, or if it's just your personal opinion, put that out there. My unnamed source tells me that putting unsubstantiated claims out there is not well received in the journalism business. |

Just to clarify. I'm not saying we should use the option as our primary package, or alter the system completely, but instead offer more option looks to disturb defensives predictive abilities. I don't believe the option will be used (if it is at all), as a systemic staple. Moreover what I was eluding to in saying it's a hopeful prospect applies more to the coaching staffs willingness to adopt a less popular package in order to facilitate, and reinforce the strengths of the personel. The hopefulness spawns from the logic that this microcosm could eventually permeate the overall mentality. |

Where did Mike Shanahan hint at the option (3 times)?
Had a busy weekend and hadn't heard this..... |

Re: RGIII Named Starter
I thought RG3 said he is a pocket passer, that is his strength. Not a run a scrambling QB running the option. Let him learn the offense first. Once he gets injuried running the ball, I dont want to hear the complaining. U know why the option isnt run in the NFL?

If it can be used in a way that 1.) Our QB is not taking too many hits and 2.) defenses fear it enough to adjust to it (like you said) then I think it could be used effectively and really screw up pass coverages. I agree, if coach Shanahan is sincere (I believe he is) it is exciting to hear his willingness to tweak the offense to use all of RG3's weapons. |
Re: RGIII Named Starter
Kinda didn't plan on listening to 30 minute interview on a rookie mini-camp just to hear a couple of sentences.
Could someone just tell me what he said or tell me where he spoke about running the option? |

RGIII is a pocket passer primarily. I'm not a big fan of running the option in the NFL - because defenses are much too quick for an option offense to be very successful. Maybe in a very limited, occasional option play. I'm assuming when Shanahan talks about tweaking the offense to fit it with what Griffin does the best, then he's talking about putting in more shotgun, spread type of plays rather than option runs. |

I agree -He is a quarterback with "olympic speed". If you watch him run he runs more like a track guy IMO than a RB -- more straight up speed and less "shake n bake". He is going to need to master the "slide" and getting out of bounds when he runs to avoid unnecessary hits. |

you know what would scare defenses more from the Skins? Basic, competent decision making from the QB position.

Re: RGIII Named Starter
You do not give up what we gave up and then let them watch from the sidelines. RG3 is the starter. Period.
Reading NFL defenses? This is the highest level folks! No college team, especially those crappy big 12 defenses, will run the complex defenses that NFL teams do. NFL teams disguise things to try to confuse young QB's and they will confuse RG3 just like they would any young rookie QB coming into the league. From everything I have heard about RG3, he is a film rat and that will help with these complex defenses. He will need some time and I am 100% positive he will pick up things on tape as his career goes along and he will be less and less confused the more he plays. Man to man, cover 2, 3 or 4 or zone blitzes its not rocket science. RG3 will master them all! |

Dude. Seriously? This is a football forum not a PhD program. Using a thesaurus doesn't make your points anymore valid or correct than others'. You could just say you "think the option will be used to keep defenses honest, and using the option would suit our team's strength. Hopefully Shanny continues to employ strategies and tactics based on our personnel." Much more succinct and to the point rather than unclear jargon. Might make you seem less pretentious too. |

I also misused the word elude.
Quit being a lazy fan ;)
lol, you got me. (but if i'm gonna be called lazy I would like to think I'm quite thorough)
Admittedly I don't consume every media sound bite. And interviews from a unpadded rookie mini-camp wouldn't normally break my inertia because there normally fluff. But being that they mentioned option my interest is piqued being that there's a thread practically devoted to the possibility of option and more specifically zone read in this offense. (it also has other speculations about our future offense). If anyone would like to discuss the possibiliites for option football within this thread; please feel free as I get bored updating/responding to my own posts: http://www.thewarpath.net/redskins-locker-room/47172-new-look-offense-same-but-better-6.html#post905681 But I promise scout's honor I'll listen to the whole thing manana.:yeahright |
Re: RGIII Named Starter
IMO it seemed as though Shanny was simply saying they would look to take advantage of what RGIII brings to the field. I would not take what he said as that we Re definitely goin to use the option just that it is an option givin our qb's skill set. I tend to think we haven't seen coach make changes to our offense based on that because we have not had a qb that warranted such.
As far as the ability to read defenses that will take RGiii some time to get down and I don't think we have a qb on the roster that will be able to diagnose a defense better than RG III. I am not trying to get to excited but RG III's football IQ maybe higher than his skill set which could make for one hell of a scary player. If he stays healthy he could change the game. These next few years could be one hell of a rise for our team. |
