I don't really see Ron Rivera as an option for here, or Mangini (I actually hope he stays on TV, think he's really good there). But if we're going to with a fired/soon to be fired head coach, what about Romeo Crennel?
He's certainly a good coach, always liked Crennel and his players seem to respect him. He knows his stuff. However I'd prefer we go out and get a young guy and not a retread. Mangini is great on tv, love listening to him. Does he even want to coach anymore? |

Yeah I don't see the point in switching now, and I seriously doubt it will happen. Shanahan came here with the intent of having a 3-4 defense. I don't think he's going to give up on that. |

Hey Mat or Smot. I was listening to 980 and they are talking about Shanny. One thing that got me is they said if shanny leaves the possibility of cerrato coming back. I spazzed out... In your opinion how would you react if that happened. If that did happended I would be done with this team. If the 980host said "I would be done with this team". |

when you look at our numbers, our rushing defense is very solid, even with our injuried players out-which says our scheme works. If we revamped our secondary with a new starter at FS, Merriweather at SS, J Wilson at 2nd CB, new #1 CB, and a round 2 or 3 CB or Crawford at the Nickle with both Orakpo and underrated Carriker back in the line up rushing the passer...I think we see a defense in the top half of the league, maybe a top ten. |
re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)
I see no point in switching to a 4-3 either. We've been drafting for the 3-4 and it can be very effective with the right personell and coaching.

well its in the discussion if we get a new defensive coridnator. Its pretty much a given Haslett is gone after the season. So if we hire someone who runs a 4-3, obvious it would set us back do to personel. Its a legit question. |

Couldn't agree more and when it's all in place the Offense will also look even better. Hate saying 'Next year', but that's the way it's headed. |

The contracts of Cofield, Bowen, Merriwether, Garcon and Morgan together are greater than Haynesworth, no? You can give Cofield the benefit of the doubt, which I do, and say he's out of position. The rest is just blah. Guys that for one reason or another don't contribute much, but the overarching theme is we spent a wad of cash on high-risk/uncertain reward type players. Garcon and Morgan have done nothing in their careers up to this point to justify what they were given. I don't care that another franchise may have given them the same. How are those franchises doing btw? The Niners clearly let Morgan walk, and appear to be better off because of it, no? In short, Mike's FA moves overall have been a gigantic failure, as were Cerrato's. It's the reaction (talking about fans here) that's been different, but again I don't suspect it will last much longer. |
I wish I could find the article I read about how we play the Steelers defense......but not the way they play it. They usually start out pretty basic and then bring on disquised blitzes etc. And they are very good at disquising what they're doing. With Hasletts defense they rarely fool anyone and without that our defense is pretty easy to read. The Steelers offense was a step or two ahead of us all day. Haslett may know the 3-4 but he definitely doesn't have the creativity to get the most out of it.
I remember that read, it was excellent. |

I have changed in the last few seasons, since Gibbs Ver. 2.0. Long view, hard as it is to maintain as a fan. With RGIII we now have a great (possibly the greatest, potential-wise) QB to build around. |

Cofield has not been Ratcliff-like at the NT, but has been serviceable. and at times very good. Morgan has been a solid option in the passing game and, more importantly, has been written up as a great blocking WR. That's not even considering what Garcon and Merriweather may end up contributing over the life of their contracts. To compare those five pick-ups to Haynesworth in terms of contribution is just about as divorced from reality as someone suggesting that we should hire Jack Del Rio as our next coach. |

Not going to quote the guy but just want to remind people that Garcon turned a contract from the awesome, amazing 4-3 Indianapolis Colts as well as the unbelievable, how could they have possibly lost to the Redskins Minnesota Vikings, not to mention some team up in New England. He's a young WR who's proven he can play in this league and has (hopefully) his best years ahead of him. That's why he got a big contract.
I would also remind people that the 49ers in fact wanted to keep Morgan but the Redskins have the benefit of playing where he grew up and he wanted to come home. |

Garcon being hurt is uncontrollable. Morgan other than the ball at Finnegan has been a good signing for the little we gave him (2 years 6 million right?). I have no clue why fans here are suggesting we get Dwayne Bowe (or Greg Jennings). They don't make our defense better. And frankly, we're good enough without even Garcon, because RG3 makes everyone look good. We can win on Offense with the guys we have or had (Fred Davis going down Definitely hurts us). Next year I'm thinking Garcon will be a lot healthier and won't miss so much time for us. |
re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)
Right now I'm pretty upset with 'ol Haslett but it is not impossible to believe that we're going to be much better simply because of getting guys back from injury. Getting all of our guys back is going to be huge and I expect huge big things.

That play/attitude brought some penalties on us, which is going to happen from time to time. And I'm ok with it. Garcon and Morgan will both have big games by season's end, but like you said our offense doesn't depend on either guy. |

abandon ship w haslett. let the new defensive mind have time w shanny and allen before free agency and the draft.
Definitely stay the course with Shanny. For starters our offensive personnel is now tailored to his scheme and as Denver learned it's very hard to switch back. On top of that not many coaches can find Running Backs like they're long snappers. Also they've not only done a great job developing RG3 but Cousins looks to be coming along as well. Denver realized they made a mistake letting Shanny go, the best COA is to keep him and find a defensive guy that can bring the D back to where it was the past decade. |

someone that sees the real issue. Look, two of our best pass rushers are on IR. playing with basically 3rd string safeties and lets be honest, our corners are horrible. Hall included. You could pay a minimum contract and get the same output as what he is giving us. Haslett took our D from last, to top 10 I believe last year. We have no safeties at all. One thing I have noticed, or haven't noticed is the big blitz on 3rd down. Now I know the coverage is lacking, but in my experience you blitz to cover up the lack of coverage ability. We just aren't getting to the QB like we did last year, which is obvious by the last in the league stat we have against the pass. Against the rush, top notch. So lets not get rid of Haslett and lets get some quality players instead |
re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)
Shanahan won't fire Haslett. Not even when the season is over.

re: Hey Ho, Haslett has to go! (or maybe not)
It can't get worse, and something has to spark them. I am not a big fan of in season change either, but this has become worse than bad. Give it to Morris, and if the team responds than we dont have to worry about the search. If they have someone in mind for next season as SS would lead (or tease) us to believe than bring him in next year regardless. For the sake of the fact that we are rite there in a boat for the second wild card position full of about 5 other teams with basically identical records (two of which we beat head to head) - do whatever it takes to try and be the last mediocre team standing in that damn boat.

Carriker is a run-stopping d end and rarely put pressure on the QB. Haslett took a top 10 defense to bottom of the league, and then last year we were middle of the pack. Back to the bottom this year. Carriker is a huge loss on the pass rush front because he would push the pocket right up the middle in the face of the QB causing the QB to either not step up or try getting out of the pocket where our pass rushers would get him. Believe me we miss orakpo a lot but carriker is equally as huge of a loss. |
