Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
Never suggested we have ed reed I was going by the whole premise that you can't get FA's to fill in your secondary to be good. Houston did it a few years ago with Johnathan Joesph and Daniel Manning; their defense went from 32nd to top 5 I believe.
Steelers aren't a good example anymore because they've really gone down hill. Seahawks I'll agree with.
What I think their not getting is Josh Wilson is not very good. He's ok. Hall is slightly better but cost the team 2 games with his antics and 15yrd penalties. If Hall is not being brought back at a lower price then we need a Talib or Toler, or Smith. You can't go into the season with Rookie CB's and expect them to know the defense 100%. As well as technique. It would be nice if colleges taught technique now a days but they don't have time for that. So whoever the team drafts might have problems at the start. That is why it's nice to pick up a seasoned Vet to help out and to help teach the new guys. Basically there has to be a mixture of Vets and Rookies. and... if there is someone out there better then Wilson we'd be a fool not to try and get them. |

Are you sure about that? if they have 30M in dead cap, 15M in cap space, that would mean their current cap charges are about 78M, 13M of which is Carson Palmer alone. I don't think you can field a team at the 65M mark, can you? Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
Are the Skins gonna have to trade a current player for a CB/S on another team? Is there a big June 1st cut looming? I can't see how any FA difference-makers can be afforded.
|
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
We cant afford it now without a restructure. But keep in mind, its a deep draft for secondary. I think there will be a lot of safeties and CB's getting cut during TC due to the new crop of rookies coming into the league. So trading a player for secondary help is something I dont see happening.

Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
they killed june 1st cuts more or less. you can designate 2 june 1st cuts and release them now instead.

I think part of the plan from day one was to go down the entire roster and have veteran players restructure contracts. We still don't know who the Redskins will sign in free agency or what's left of free agency, but it's good to know that we have players that are all about the good of the team. |

Maybe i'm being overly cynical, but I think its less about players doing whats good for the team and more about players realizing what we're offering them is still more than theyd get from anywhere else. |

Not sure where exactly, but right up against it is probably the most accurate description. Where u been hiding? |
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
Sorry all, I'll get to an update as soon as I can. Info is scarce so it will be full of assumptions and ultimately will confirm what Shanahan has been saying, that we have little to no room.
Get comfortable. Our free agents will come few and far between as we search for value in character guys with something left to prove. There's something to be said for the locker room impact of having multiple guys who feel they have to scratch and claw to earn their stripes. |

Is Jammall Brown still on the roster?
His Wiki says he still a Skin....those are usually up to date. Or is his cap affect over and done with? |

I found this great site. I am sure somebody is going to tell me I should have read thru 136 posts becuse it is already been posted. But I think if thats the case it still would be worth posting again.

Over the Cap - NFL salary cap, contracts, and more
good site. They have us with $2,976,031 in cap space. the only thing that the site doesn't have (that I saw) is an update date, so I don't know what that does or doesn't include. On the team page, it has EJ Biggers as a 1.5M cap hit this year, so that would seem to me fairly updated. I believe that money has to cover the rookie pool, plus most teams go into the season leaving some in case of emergency, so it's not much play room. Also, they have us with 67 signed players, I would imagine we want to be around 80, even the rule of 51 minimizes that impact for now. |
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
Nearly $3M in room? Have there been some restructures that we haven't heard about?
|

There usually are. The past few years it happened very quietly for a few players. |

Yeah I've seen a few other sources confirm the $3M number so it must be right. |
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
I cannot believe we paid a really, really bad version of Hall (Biggers) $1.5 million this season. Totally a head-scratcher signing at this point.

Looks like we gave him: - $635K base salary - $365K signing bonus - $500K roster bonus The min salary for his experience is $630K. And the roster bonus probably only gets paid if he makes the team. So if he's a disaster they could probably cut him and only absorb a $365K deadcap hit. I don't know much about DJ Baggers so I can't comment whether this is a good deal or not. But I'm pretty sure DHall wouldn't come back for $1.5M. |

Have no idea what Hall wants, but he's not gonna command much on the market IMO, and if we're willing to pay a huge downgrade (Biggers) up to $1.5 mil I think that makes Hall a steal for, say, up to $2.5 mil based on incentives. |

winfield, followed by this year's draft picks.
or possibly hall, followed by this year's draft picks. c griffin was a 1-year deal. he was okay, but not great for the price. |

at this point it looks like Hall or Winfield. which ever one signs for a salary cap hit under 2:5 mill. |
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
We may get a decision on Winfield by tomorrow since he's staying in DC and spending tonight and tomorrow afternoon here with the Redskins Brass according to @SonofWashington: Source: Antoine Winfield Will be staying overnight, meeting with team officials tonight and tomorrow

Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
According to profootballtalk.com, as of today there are five NFL teams with over $25M in cap space and many more with over $15M in cap space. To me, that represents a disgraceful choice of greater profits over competitiveness on the part of those teams.
This information reminds me that I'm still steamed that the Redskins and Cowboys were penalized cap space on the supposed basis that they were trying to get an unfair competitive advantage. Why aren't any teams ever penalized for not spending enough to be competitive? I know we've talked about this a lot, yet we're still regularly reminded of what a farce this whole episode has become. What good has become of the players union caving in to the threat of a reduced salary cap and agreeing to penalize the Skins and the Cowboys? How ironic is it that two teams who would spend money on player salaries if they could can't spend as much while the notoriously cheap owners sit on the cap dollars that were taken from the Skins and Cowboys and distributed to them? Nobody will ever convince me that DeMaurice Smith didn't anticipate that this very thing would happen when he agreed to go along with John Mara and his cronies on the penalties against the Skins and Cowboys. The players should wise up and drop Smith like a bad habit. As for the NFL owners who pressed for these penalties, F-'em. The Skins will beat their teams despite the penalty. I can hardly believe what this episode has done to me: I now hate Mara and the Giants more than I hate Jerrah and the Cowboys. End of rant. |

Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
Yeah so much for the "spirit of the salary cap" bullshit.
Looking at those numbers, and the fact that no team was penalized for dropping below the salary floor in the unfloored year, I imagine the players understand that the "spirit of the salary cap" is to keep the owners from getting into bidding wars over players, and not about level playing fields or parity. DeSmith did a terrible job of handling the CBA negotiations on many levels, but as always, smooth talkers find ways to survive. |
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
So on Sirius XM NFL radio this morning Bill Polian was breaking down the salary cap and basically said a conservative amount of cap space GMs leave unused for rookie signings, practice squad players and IR players is $ 8.5-9 million. So does that mean we are screwed?

Just means we have more restructures to do. |
Re: Redskins 2013 Salary Cap Status
I thought teams were forced to use like 98% of there cap space.
