Like I said, so did Sanchez. What are we going to be saying when his regular season stats aren't good enough to carry the team into the playoffs? I suspect that'll be happening this year.
Granted, I realize he's a much better QB than Sanchez in the regular season, just will people be saying the same once they stop missing the playoffs?
Sanchez was never very good to begin with, Flacco has been very solid in the regular season and great in the playoffs. Not sure I really understand the comparison. Don't you think 5 playoff appearances in a row and a SB win buys Flacco some credit for a while? What else does the guy have to do? I think most fans would be elated if Griffin puts up a similar run. |

He's started every game for the Ravens since being drafted and they've been a playoff team every single year he's taken over. He brings stability and he can make all the throws. Sanchez is not in the same league as Flacco, and I don't care what the stats say. He doesn't play in a wide open offense so his stats probably will never be great. But he's a pretty damn good Qb. |
Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)
Joe Flacco is now 7-4 in the postseason with five road wins, tied for all-time best with Eli Manning and Roger Staubach. In his past six playoff games (four on the road) he has thrown 12 touchdown passes to just two interceptions.
Comparing to Sanchez is crazy. Ravens still have a good offensive line and a good RB. Ravens might not make it back to the Super Bowl, but teams that make it 2 years in a row is rare these days. |

Sanchez has more ints than tds in his career. He's rex grossman

However, hist stats are average at best in the regular season, and YOU all keep harping about the post season. There is more to the game than just the post season. I understand many of you put a heavy weight on it, but it's laughable to do so. See Giantone's Eli is better than Peyton statement for a good example.
Do you think this year will mark a run of endless playoff-less seasons for Flacco and the Ravens?
I think they miss the playoffs this year. I thought last year was the last year of their window to consistently contend for a championship. They almost blew it getting into the playoffs. A run of missed playoffs? I think that depends on how well they draft the next year or so. Their defense is nothing like it used to be, and Flacco is really too inconsistent to carry the team. One minute, the guy looks like he's a elite QB in the league, the next minute he's blowing it against a shitty team like the Jaguars. Way too inconsistent for my liking, and losing talent isn't going to help them any. The one thing that helps them is that Pittsburgh is on its way down as well, and the Browns are.....the Browns. |
I don't see Baltimore in the playoffs either. They lost 10 starters from last years team, that's going to be very hard and Pittsburgh won't be as bad and also Cincinnati is very good.

I think the Ravens make the playoffs this year...says the guy who had them in the Super Bowl last year (or earlier this year if you insist)

You're doubting one of the best run franchises in the NFL. And IMO, they got better on Defense. Ed Reed isn't the same disruptive force he used to be. Matt Elam is a rookie but I thought he was hands down the best safety in the draft. I think he'll be as good, if not better, than Ed Reed was last year. MLB, yeah they lost Ray Lewis, but he had strictly become the voice of the team as opposed to the great player (and voice) he used to be (aka he slowed down and showed his age and became a liability in coverage, also got injured more). So they replaced him with young Fast and great coverage man Arthur Brown. On the field, they upgraded that position. Off the field, they didn't upgrade, but honestly no one would be an upgrade over Ray. And they got Ladarius Webb (who is a top 3 CB in the NFL when healthy) back from injury. They replaced Bernard Pollard with Michael Huff who is much better in coverage than Pollard was (injuring patriots though, he is not as good as him in that category). And I haven't even mentioned that they got Dumervil to rush the passer, who right now, is a better pass rusher than Suggs, Upshaw, and the prior starter Paul Kruger. I can see why you doubt Flacco for losing to a team like the Jaguars (whom they lost to 2 years ago not last year; you're probably thinking of the Chiefs game which they won 9-6), but even the elite QBs will get tested by very bad, losing teams. Hell Tom Brady got beat by Arizona ( and tested by Jacksonville last year; ditto Aaron Rodgers who got out played by Blaine Gabbert), and Drew Brees got beat by the Chiefs. I'd consider all those QBs elite. They'll always have tough games against the Steelers, because that is their Redskins-Cowboys rivalry (no matter how good or bad the teams are, they always play each other close), and the Bengals are a very good team on the rise, but the Ravens are still the best team in the division with all their recent addtions and subtractions they've had. Sure they've lost Boldin--its a big loss-- but they draft well. One of their guys will step up. Sure they've lost Pitta for the year, but people don't realize that he and Ed Dickson would go back and forth in terms of starting; and Dickson is more atheltic than Pitta. They're OL will be better and they have a 1-2 punch in the ground game with Pierce and Rice. |
Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)
They miss the playoffs. Elam will not be Ed Reed right away if at all, Webb is coming off 2 major knee surgeries so who to say that he will even be the same, there left tackle can't even practice because he is over weight, Dumervill had 11 sacks last year but only 4 came at critcal times and Ed Dickson is no Pitta. Also I think they brought in way to many free agents at one time to build any chemistry. Time will tell but I think it's the Bengals division this year.
|
Ravens will be a 9-10 win team again and right in the hunt for the division.
Seems that some can't wait for them to collapse, I just don't see it happening anytime soon. Too good of an organization. You don't have that type of sustained success on accident. |
Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)
Also they were VERY lucky to make it by Denver.
|
Re: Around the NFL 2013 Offseason (Episode 99)
Ravens, Steelers, and Patriots are three teams that have been too successful to just say they are going to lose this year. Those three teams have been to almost all the super bowls since 2001 and all have won multiple super bowls since then. Until they actually start losing consistently and not due to a major injury, I do not think its very wise to bet against those three teams. I think its just hopeful hatred and jealousy of a successful organization.
The Ravens and Patriots will most likely have a better defense this year than they did last year, and the Steelers got younger on defense as well and got rid of some old pieces that weren't that good last year. Plus if Big Ben stays healthy (big if) they make the playoffs this year, and they probably would have made it last year if he hadn't gotten hurt. I hope the Redskins join the class of these organizations because once you are there, everyone just hopes you lose and they try to find reasons you won't be successful but you just keep racking up the wins. But I personally believe it all depends on RG3's knee. |

Early reports on Webb is that he's looking better than he did before. Elam being better than what Reed was last year was a prediction of mine, not a know fact. McKinnie is always overweight yet always ends up as their starting tackle and doing well. What is this ''only 4 came at critical times'' stuff? So JJ Watt had 20.5 sacks last year, but only a few of his sacks came at critical times, so now he's not a good player?!? Orakpo had 4.5 sacks against the Raiders his rookie year, but I guess that doesn't matter or get counted or add to his credibility of being a very good, pro bowl caliber player because it came against a bad team... And Ed Dickson started more games (11) than Pitta (5) last year. He also played in less games (13) than Pitta (16). Why is Ed Dickson starting more than Pitta if he is "no Pitta". |

The only team I feel that way about is the Patriots, and that's only to wipe the smug looks of their faces and their fans. I have no problems with the Ravens. They are a well run organization, and they have a very good coach in Harbaugh. That said, I still think this will be a down year until they can recoup some talent on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. Also, I don't think Flacco is a bad QB, just a overrated one due to his playoff performances. I think he's a slightly above average QB who's inconsistent. |
I don't hate or dislike Baltimore but I just think Cincinnati and pitt are going to be slightly better. And Cleveland will be improved I believe as well so overall it's a tougher division

I distinctly remember having serious discussions around new years about how Flacco might not be the answer at QB for them. They believed it. Man, tough crowd.
It is just not about the stats. I have seen 95% of his games and he is just not a guy that makes you all warm and fuzzy that he can carry a team on his shoulders to victory. Throwing 11 touchdowns with no picks in a postseason is an all time great performance and not just luck, not even manning could do that. He outplayed every quarterback he went against (including two that everyone agrees are two of the best to ever play) Plus you look at flaccos numbers and compare them to Brady, manning, and Big Bens numbers from their first 5 years playing and they are actually pretty comparible. (Not better but comparible). I think you can also make a case every team that wins a Super Bowl needs luck on their side. But of course only time will tell, but out of all the quarterbacks that got big contracts this year I would take flacco over all of them. |
When people are playing the luck card you know they ain't got nothing.
