Sorry, my sarcasm wasn't obvious enough. Watching RG warm and practice all preseason you knew there was no way in hell anything would hold him back from starting. I'm beyond excited for this season, just praying our man plays smart, coaches call smart plays, and the gods favor us :) |

Really weird.. Here it is.
The key moment in that video is Kyle stating for the whole world to hear the read option works because the QB is a running threat. Couldn't even begin to count how many posts here tried to argue against that simple fact all last season, hopefully it can be put to bed now and forever. The question is how much do they plan to use RG as a runner. Given his already terrible injury history, the new NFL rules about running QBs and the way all defenses will target him I think still using the read option is beyond irresponsible. It's really concerning how Kyle admitted he relied on RG as a runner to minimize blitzes and pressure. Hopefully pass protection and scheme are improved this season, so we have a "sustainable offense" if you will. |
Re: RGIII cleared to start week 1
Of course the read option works because of the threat of the QB running. Who argued against that?
It's been said all offseason but RGIII holds his health in his own hands for the most part. Get down or get out of bounds should be all that's going through his head for the rest of his career once he leaves the pocket. |

Could this statement be used to characterize that the injuries did not happen to Robert on "design run plays", but rather improvisation on Robert's part? |
Re: RGIII cleared to start week 1
For all the read option drama, it's interesting to note we only ran it on average 8 times per game. It's not the basis of this offense.

I thought you were concerned with his health? RG3 would not have been injured once the entire year if he had just ran out of bounds twice (Atlanta and Baltimore). Its on RG3 to get down or out of bounds. If he doesnt do that, it does not matter what scheme we run, he will get injured. But then again, thats true for any QB. |
Of course the option works b/c the QB is a running threat. Please show me any post that asserted that the threat of the QB running was unimportant to or not an essential element of the RO.
Running the RO 10 times threatens a QB run each and every time even if he only keeps it once. I would suggest, at this point, in any given game it is unnecessary for RGIII to keep it even once for the him to be a threat on each play given how dangerous he has shown himself to be as a runner. |

With his "new" interpretation of the rules on hitting the "qb" the read option should be on the way out this year. So the Shannys will have to find a way to block a pass rusher. |
Re: RGIII cleared to start week 1
Griffin cannot be exposed in the RO option as he was last year due to the new "rules" he can now be demolished on each and every handoff when he is an "option". Get it! There is a difference between this year and last, last year he could simply show that he was not the runner after the handoff, now he can be hit as defensive insurance that he doesn't have the ball or so that he won't have the ball. Big deterrent to the RO. Defenses are now on an even plane, they don't have to fall for the fake the qb stays a 'live player" through-out the play inside the tackles.

They didn't write "new"rules. Basically they clarified that a qb in a RO play can be tackled like a runner(hits on lower legs) as opposed to being protected by qb rules. If Griffin declares himself out of the play he isn't getting hit without a penalty. The concern about the hits that harbaugh raised was looking for protection to the legs and head that a pocket qb has on a play action pass. Griffin demonstrated for most of last season that he understands how to protect himself on the RO. The concern, until Griffin proves otherwise, will be scrambling situations late in games that we are behind in and he feels internal pressure to make plays. |

“The basic concept is, the quarterback position is not defenseless throughout the down. It’s the posture he presents that will dictate his protections,” Blandino said. Still, that doesn’t mean defenders get unlimited free shots on quarterbacks on all read-option plays. If it’s obvious that the quarterback doesn’t have the ball anymore, he can’t get hit: The rules say that if a defender drills a quarterback after he has handed off or pitched the ball and isn’t taking a running posture anymore, it’s unnecessary roughness. “If the quarterback is out of the pocket, he’s clearly out of the play, he cannot be unnecessarily contacted,” Blandino said. |
Good clarification.
There are no "new rules". Once he gives himself up by putting his hands up he's safe.
If you did as much research as you do defending the RO, you would note the quarterback once he is established as a runner or a running option on a play to a "defensive player he is to be treated as a runner until a run fake is carried outside of the tackle box" Also, I stated new "rule" I was incorrect, they are re-interpreting the rule. The fact that it allows the defender to hit the qb as a runner(at or below the waist), it spells DOOM for the RO. |

Just for clarification , in a case where the ball is turned over ( fumble, interception ) and the QB is either going for the ball or to tackle the ball carrier he can also be nailed( hit ...yeah hit) |

Yeah that's nothing new. We're talking about the read option. |
Re: RGIII cleared to start week 1
whistler really doesn't like the read-option, does he? On average, the Redskins only run it 8 times a game; it's not like our offense depends on it. I think whistler is getting worked up over nothing.
The read option is a gimmick offense at this level. The right personnel and defensive scheme would stop it flat! A defense with a hybrid SS/LB on the outside(s) behind a 4 man line w/ends wide and 2 inside linebackers that fill is the answer (correct=single safety see-Texas in the 80's), personnel is the answer. Griffin is best in a spread type of offense where he can scramble if needed, with up-tempo and plays called at the line of scrimmage. I forgot that would require the Shannys to relinquish all of the play calling and game mis-management. NEVERMIND

This just indicates that the Shannys are going to stick with the gimmick offense, instead of maturing the system into a less hybrid and more of a spread type WITH AUDIBLES.

The option play is not sustatinable in the NFL if you want to keep your QB healthy in the least.
|
Re: RGIII cleared to start week 1
The Read Option offense is just not sustainable. Do you really think you'll see a 30yr old quarterback running it? So, what happens to RO quarterbacks after 30?

If people want to play to stop the read option, it opens up other areas for the offense to exploit. The defense that you quoted him as saying is a 4-4, seeing as they have to cover both the right and left side out of the pistol since it can go either way with the same formation. That defense is highly susceptible to a good passing offense, which we do have. Listening to some of these people would make you think that RG3 threw all of 10 passes for the entire season. |

The read option is only an offense when it is run the majority of the time. We have it as a single play within the offense that we run. If people show a defense to stop it, we can run other plays. |

I think I'll worry about that when we have a 30 year old qb. Basically, a good OC always measures and gameplans based on the strength of his players. Not utilizing Griffin's RO abilities (which in my opinion are amazing) is as foolish as putting Carson Palmer in a full fledged RO plan. |
