Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
So with that thought Jason Garrett should be a super bowl coach by now , right ?I mean he grew up with his dad a coach with a couple of teams and the Cowboys (scout)
Bruce is the son of George Allen. I like that. He grew up a Redskins fan. I like that. If he had one burgundy eye amd one gold eye, I'd like that, too. Also, I forgot to mention that he was the GM of two Super Bowl teams. Give me a break. I've got enough doomsayers who claim to be Redskins fans to deal with here. I don't need a Giants fan to pile on. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
I look at it this way. This set up is better than having the coach have all the power. For the most part, that way hasn't really worked. I think we're fine. It seems Brown will run the pro personnel side and Campbell works college. Allen has the final say. It sounds like he's going to lean heavily on those two. Not sure why anyone has a issue with this set up. Allen has been the GM of two Super Bowl teams. I trust him.
I feel the same way. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
I really don't understand your position, but it seems to be one based out of pure speculation/distrust of Snyder. By most all accounts he stayed out of Gibbs and Shanahan's way, and mostly out of Cerrato's way as well. You say he has a track record, but his last 8 years of owning the team has been mostly with him on the outside letting the people he thought he could trust handle it. He is still a work in progress as an owner, but he's by no means the same guy who fired Marty brashly.
I just hope we get something that works for the Skins, regardless of how long the process takes
You pretty much nailed my position. I don't trust Snyder, and would like someone other then a head coach (under qualified to make personnel decisions) to have total control of the organization. I'm envious of your optimism of Snyder's rebirth as an owner, but I just don't buy it. I understand it's a tired subject to bash Snyder's ways... so I'm going to do my best to steer clear of it as it's a considerably moot point. Moving forward, I've heard that those involved in personnel currently within the organization are talented- and I support empowering them by promoting from within. |

He deserves your trust, and so does Bruce Allen, they are Redskins fans, lifers ya know. Who would you rather have at the helm? You must be a Cowboys fan . . .:laughing2 |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
I got news for everyone. DAN SNYDER OWNS THE REDSKINS AND WILL FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. Get on board with him or find another team. Otherwise you're going to be miserable.

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
FRPLG, I was just having a bit of fun. Honestly, I have long ago accepted that Snyder is the man, and I really do hope he is learning from his mistakes, and that the people he is surrounding himself with will really be able to turn things around. That said, I am very much allowed to question and/or criticize his decisions. It won't do me any good, but I'm still allowed to. But I'll tell you, I wont waste my money on Redskins memorabilia or tickets and fuel the machine until I see that things are going better. That's the only way I can vote.

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
I am simply tired of hearing people bitch and complain about the one thing that is almost certainly never going to change. Not only is it a waste of time but too many refuse to believe there has been any progress in his approach. They look at any failings of the organization and ascribe them directly to DS's past short-comings. The old saying is "you can make some people happy all the time and all people happy some of the time but never all people all the time" When it comes to DS the saying should be "You can make a few people happy some of the time and most people happy never ever no matter what because they are whiny grumps"

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
Well, if they were winning consistently believe me, I would be (and I'm sure many others) kissing his @$$. When you are "the man" of any big organization you are going to be criticized. I am training to be a nursing home administrator, and everyone of the people I'm learning from will tell you, it is lonely at the top. Really, I have very little sympathy for him, he makes a ton of money, he is not a very good person in his private life, and his organization has done very poorly since he's taken ownership. I am not blaming him for everything, (and I get your point, some people do) but I don't think it makes anymore sense to say he should not receive any criticism.

You are right...I am seriously considering the option of finding another team root for. I am in a transitional form. |

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
Per Ian Rappaport's twitter, it looks like Lovie wants Morocco Brown to be the GM in Tampa. We're going to have to promote him if we want to keep him.

Kind of suspect Brown will take Tampa GM over DC GM, all else being equal. I think SS and others have said we can do better than Brown, maybe we found out soon. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
You are a front runner.
Guess I am too then. Maybe the Redskins died (and were only briefly resurrected) when Joe Gibbs left. One more "charlie foxtrot" drama of a Redskins HC , and I feel like just being an NFL aficionado, not a fan of any team. Rooting for the "Daniel Snyders" sucks.

I'd be a little surprised if the Redskins even allow the interview since they are in the midst of a process themselves. They may block it. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
Allen did say that there's a chance at adding someone else (maybe it's Doug Williams) to the front office. Maybe this means Brown moves to Tampa Bay and Williams takes over that position. Maybe it means once the head coach has been chosen, Allen is promoted, Brown is promoted, and Williams takes Brown's place - or Williams comes in as the new GM? Who knows? I just think there's someone else coming into the front office before it's all said and done.

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
What about A.J. Smith? He's already collecting a paycheck as a "front office executive." What exactly are they hiring for again?

It would be easier to block if Brown already had the title of GM. Just sayin'. |

He's a consultant. It's not exactly a full time gig for him. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
As long as Allen isn't selecting the players, I'm fine with the setup. If Brown/Campbell/AJ are making the calls on players, than I don't really care.

I imagine Allen will be involved and have final say. Otherwise, he'd be Team President and promote Brown or Campbell to GM. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
Doug Williams officially added to the Redskins front office per Mark Maske on Twitter.

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
From all I have read, Campbell, Brown, Smith and Williams all have very good talent evaluation skills.
The question I have is whether this FO office arrangement is an unwieldy multiheaded beast or if BA is really simply conducting a well-tuned orchestra that has, to date, been held back from playing its best. If these for talent evaluators work well together to give BA top quality talent to choose from, all will be well. If it's just in-fighting and "Pick Me"ism, well - same song, different day. |

Two weeks ago I was hoping he'd be our John Elway, now not so much. Haven't heard anything negative about him as a front office executive, I hope he can continue his winning ways in our FO. |

Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
So a guy in my office is convinced that hiring Williams is just cronyism at its worst and that Williams wouldn't have a shot at an NFL job but for the Skins hiring him. Is hiring Williams just a "callous and obvious attempt to appeal to past glory"? Or does Williams have a real role to fill?
Any thoughts? |

Any thoughts?
Well, it's not his first front office gig. He worked under Allen in Tampa, that relationship is the main reason he's here not the fact he won a SB. |

Any thoughts?
I think the guy in your office is probably right. I see nothing in Williams career that should have him over personnel. He was a actual scout for ONE year. ONE!!! |

Saw this not a bad or good read.

If it weren’t for nagging injuries to then starting quarterback Jay Schrader in 1987, Doug Williams would have never seen the field in the playoffs nor the Super Bowl. During his playoff run, his numbers weren’t anything spectacular as many suspect. His highest completion percentage being 48.3 (lowest 34.6) 207 yards (lowest 119) and two touchdowns. In essence, Doug Williams has lived off of ONE quarter during his 11 year football career.
False. I'm guessing this guy is too young to remember. Schroeder isn't even spelled right. |

Any thoughts?
I think he is probably closer to right then wrong, but I doubt that it's a make or break hire either. Allen knows Williams from Tampa, he has the connection to the Redskins, and he wasn't getting wow'ed by other offers I assume. When looking at players, I tend to think as many good eyes as possible, what's important is how the person who makes the final call treats the input. We won't know that for a year or two at least. |

Saw this not a bad or good read.
The guy who wrote this is an idiot. Williams had several good games during 87, including a few where he came off the bench to win the game. Also in the playoffs....Chicago had a truly great defense in a game that was played in minus 10 degrees. Not ideal passing passing conditions. Minnesota also had a great defense as well. Williams didn't turn the ball over and wasn't taking sacks in those games where Jay S most certainly would have. Dude needs to do his homework. |

You're acting like he was named general manager. In the end, Brown and Campbell are going to carry the most weight in recommendations to Allen. |
Re: Let's talk about the front office situation
Where does AJ Smith fit in. His credentials are pretty good.
"Smith was promoted to general manager after then-Chargers GM John Butler died of cancer in 2003.[2] He inherited a team that was 14-34 in its previous three seasons, and had not made the playoffs since 1995. Smith directed the Chargers to five AFC West division titles and eight consecutive seasons without a losing record.[3] San Diego's 7–9 record in 2012 was their first losing season since Smith's first season in 2003. Missing the playoffs for the third straight season, the Chargers fired Smith and head coach Norv Turner the day after the 2012 season ended. Over his tenure, Smith allowed Darren Sproles, Michael Turner and Vincent Jackson to leave the Chargers without finding adequate replacements.[2] The Chargers' offensive line grew weak in 2012. Quarterback Philip Rivers was frequently forced to scramble and was sacked 49 times, contributing to his 22 turnovers—47 over the previous two seasons.[2][4] Due to public perceptions that he brings an arrogant approach to contract dealings and that his strategies involve high-risk/high-reward, Smith has been both widely praised and criticized by fans and media.[5]" |
