I would guess we'll only see DJ returning punts in critical situations.

How does being a #2/#3 = a terrible player? Is Andre Roberts a terrible player?
I beleive he was saying they are terrible becasue their talent level is 2/3 but their salary is for a 1.

At this point you put Santana Moss back to return punts every game and who cares if he gets hurt!

We pay players for their production now, we don't overpay. Some teams overpaid this offseason, we didn't. We played a bit of chicken and it paid off for us.

Funny how being smart in free agency works. You know how many GMs are kicking themselves this morning reading the numbers? F*ckem, we ball. :oink:
Winston gave up 7 sacks last year, pass
I recall reading somewhere that nearly all of those sacks were given up early in the season and that more than half of them happened in one terrible game. Then he settled down and played well for the rest of the season.

Somebody correct me if I'm mistaken about that.

I think Winston is probably worth a shot on a team-friendly contract. I'm not saying that he should be handed the starting job but just that he or another vet, perhaps Clabo, should be brought in to compete for the job.

Yep, if the negotiation was over in 30 minutes, it would be a sign we paid too much. The fact that it stretched on well into the night tells me Bruce hung in and did what was prudent, he made sure not to pay more than market value.

I think this is a little under market value too because of the timing. Only a handful of teams had the cap space to make this happen. If he was released at the end of February, he gets his $10M per season.
Andy Reid also limited him in terms of returning punts and I hope we do the same. You don't let a marquee receiver get hurt on punt returns.
Id be fine with him returning 15-20 punts a year. Kickoffs too. Imo you can get hurt just as easily in practice, at wr, or on returns.

I was thinking the same which made it even more of a Dick move by Philly; if they had released him before FA started he would have easily been the number one FA this year.

Rather just draft a Tackle in the 2nd or 3rd and let him compete with Polumbus/Compton

Paintrain 04-02-2014 12:06 PM

Re: Redskins Sign DeSean Jackson

I was crushed in '08 when we passed on Jackson in the draft so I am certainly happy now.. The contract makes it even better since it doesn't seem like it straps us financially or will prevent us from doing anything we need to do over the next 2 offseasons either.

On the field, I have zero concerns. He opens things up for everyone else, not to mention the production he can put up. FINALLY, receiver is not a position of weakness. I'll put it out there that we've got the best skill position grouping (QB, WR, TE, RB) in the division even though we don't have the best player at any of the positions. This is a sum is greater type of deal.

In the draft, it opens up so much because now we can more easily either target Moses or Ward or decide to trade back and get an extra 2 or 3. If we spend a pick on a WR, it may be in the 4th or 5th but it won't be someone we're counting on to make an immediate impact. Also, now anything we get from Hankerson is a bonus.

All in all, great signing, HTTR!!!

I've been saying for a while now that I think the cap penalty saved us from ourselves. Hopefully the Redskins have learned after the ordeal that it's important to not overpay players and to have depth. These two things go hand in hand. I think the Redskins went out and tried to win the offseason by adding the most depth and getting better deals at more spots instead of snatching up the best/highest payed players. Even though the DJax signing screams of the old way of doing business, the salary numbers suggest they are doing this much, much smarter. Color me impressed.

Back in the 80s & early 90s with Sanders, Clark, and Monk. We haven't a group like that till now.

It was awful. Maybe Kornheiser's bitterness has stuck to him. I'm sure they could have found a person off the street to do a better job this morning on the radio.

Good words from RG3. The team has a lot of work to do. I'd like to see RG3 practicing deep bombs to D. Jax right away :)

This is the first offseason that Bruce Allen has really been in charge of player personnel here in Washington. Past FA mistakes, or the "same old Redskins" if you prefer, weren't Allen's doing, as far as I understand it. Is it a big change of culture, or is this merely Bruce Allen's way of doing things? I don't think a huge change came over everyone in the Redskins' FO; it's just that Allen's in charge now, and this is the result. I bet if Allen weren't here this offseason, we would have been the "same old Redskins."

It has to be, schedules are due out in what a week or two? No refrigerator magnets have been printed yet. We should be good to go for a DJax payback game. Him and his "gang" (garcon, griff, reed, almo, etc) should be amped up for a good ole fashion beat down of the birds!

Re: Redskins Sign DeSean Jackson

While I'm excited at the prospect of what Jackson is going to do on the field for us,I just cant get over this bad feeling the Eagles have fleeced us somehow.
They definitely got over on us on the Mcnabb trade and while this is not a direct trade with us its just to good to be true.

We talk all the time about how somebodys worth a draft pick,Cousins is worth a 2nd,Fred Davis is worth a 4th,etc.I dont know for sure whether the Eagles tried to trade him or not,but how do you not get something in return for this guy? The Eagles know him better than anybody,I dont see any of his Eagles teammates having his back. Like I said it just seems to good to be true, and you know the saying about that.

As far as him doing any returns,I doubt he will.Skins have a long history of not using their best punt returners as punt returners for fear of injury and I've never understood it.
Other teams have used their starters as punt returners,Rod Woodson,Deon Sanders come to mind. You cant control when a players going to get hurt, your paying him the big money so let him do what hes good at.
Skins should have used D.Green as a returner.I can forgive them for not using him in that role in his prime, but he should have been used more.Especially his last yr,he still had the speed, only saw the field in nickel package, there was no reason not to.
Should have used Moss more or DeAngelo Hall last yr when we sucked so bad
