Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB
If you play Griffin you have to play all or at least most of the starters. Not sure that's worth it for a couple of series against scrubs.

Yeah we talked about it this morning. He is still deciding. |

I was thinking it may boost his confidence (assuming he did well). SS and Cooley both said he needs a confidence builder game. |

i agree but i wonder if BA wants to stay away from PR problems. my fan vote is for the starters to not play. yes RG3 needs a confidence boost but there is no guarantee that he will play well against tampa and that might compound the confidence issue. also, pretty clear we havent shown our true offense which i think is a major reason our 1st team offense hasnt looked great. why run RG3 out there to practice plays if we wont be running bootlegs and PAs. we are going to light the league up come week 1. taking names and kicking ass. |

Judging how our 1st team offense played this pre-season, they should all be playing. It's obvious they need the work. |
Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB
I wouldn't want to risk anyone to injury at this point. Especially playing against scrubs, I don't see where the benefit outweighs the risk. It's not like practice reps don't count.

And then when one gets injured, it's "why are they playing in a meaningless preseason game" again, just like when it happened to Portis. |

Oh god, that was the beginning of the end for Portis. It was his shoulder. |
Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB
If the offense is going to be good or bad, one or two series in the 4th pre season game isn't going to make a difference. Leave them on the sideline. The work has already been put in. We'll know week one.

You can say that about any game or any practice they are involved in. Injuries are going to happen regardless. |

Correct. But it becomes a risk/ reward scenario. It is too risky to play RGIII in a meaningless pre-season game with the reward of a few more snaps for him in live action before the regular season. Obviously I changed my tune from this morning. |
Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB
Q: How bad do we fans think the right side of our OL is?
A: It's so bad that we're actually talking about signing Richie Incognito. |

yeah, that's valid. i've been one of the ones preaching that our starters need more time in preseason because i watch teams coming off successful seasons getting much more work than us - including the seahawks. but it's hard to justify putting them against scrubs in week 4, players that are going all out to try to make an impression and land a job somewhere if not for their current team. it's hard to find a happy medium. i would have preferred our starters received more work in week 2 and week 3. Here's just some (projected) starters that got more attempts in this preseason than Griffin (who had 20): Newton - 21 Brandford -21 Kaepernick - 22 Mathew Stafford - 30 Tom Brady - 31 Geno Smith - 33 Aaron Rodgers - 33 Andy Dalton - 34 Matt Ryan - 37 Ben Rapelsberger - 37 Eli Manning - 37 Russell Wilson - 39 Ryan Tannehill - 41 Andrew Luck - 41 Jay Cutler - 42 Ryan Fitzpatrick - 43 Joe Flacco - 45 Petyon manning - 54 (lol?) There are quite a few super bowl winning QB's getting a lot more reps than our guy. I hope Gruden's some mastermind or something, because our guy isn't getting anywhere near the number of reps as many of the other QB's that are among the best playing right now. |
Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB
Incognito would upgrade our first team but also keep Long on the bench. If we think we can make Long into a capable starter sooner rather than later, we don't want Incognito.

Unless he has changed dramatically, I doubt that Incognito would be a good employee for any business. Pass. |

However, he does need the reps badly. I also don't get the whole thing around the league where coaches don't run their offenses in the preseason. The players need practice! I think that outweighs the element of surprise for one game. |

I dont think coaches really view it as saving your playbook for the regular season. What they want is to force players to win while not in the best position to do so. Nothing fancy, just go out there and beat your guy one on one. If you cant but someone else can, then that other person should make the team over you. Once the games count, then gameplan with the intention of putting your players in the best possible situation to succeed. If you really want to know Grudens offense, then study the Bengals the last few years. If you are worried that Gruden will incorporate the read option, then study RG3 from 2 years ago. Its not like teams have 50 plays hidden that no one has ever seen before only to come up with 50 more the following year. |

The right side of our line right now is not giving RG3 any time to throw. |

In a specialized system, such as Chip Kelly's, sure I agree with that. But lets be honest, most offenses have been around long enough where a few series in the preseason isnt going to make enough of a difference to outweigh making sure you pick the best available players year after year. I believe preseason is more about judging talent than it is about judging play calling. |

That's being overplayed. Robert is playing worse than the OL is. (or so in pre-season) |

It's not being overplayed because no one is talking about it in the media. I'm not absolving RG3 of his wrong doings, but the OL is not helping this team at all. Hell, we couldn't even get a running game going against the Ravens, and that's something we managed to do last year. |
The right side of our line right now is not giving RG3 any time to throw.
Oh here we go. In the Ravens game, Flacco was under constant duress and had to throw some balls with Redskin defenders hanging on him. He still got the ball off and managed 160 plus passing yards in the first half. There aren't many elite O lines in the league and QBs in general are under immediate pressure when they drop back to pass. The good ones know where they're going with the ball pre-snap and let it rip. Remember how bad the O-line looked with Jason Campbell behind it and how great it looked with Todd Colllins behind it? Same O-line, totally different results. |

And on the last play, he had all day to throw and still missed Reed wide open right in front of his face. Running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, still can't slide and jumping in the air on throws have nothing to do with the O-line. |

Or actually climb the pocket which he never does. |

And Cousins is Collins? Or is Griffin Collins and Cousins Campbell? Or is Colt McCoy Colt Brennan? I really can't wait to see what we look like in Huston, nothing else really matters stats or points wise in the preseason. RG is our guy and we have to behind him. If we get to the bye week and have 2-3 wins then you can start thinking of making a change. But it all really depends on how he looks. |

I wasn't referring to the media. Of course they want to tear down RGIII, but my reference was more about the fans. I wouldn't judge them on the running game against Baltimore because the Ravens still has a decent front 7. That said, our right side OL does need to be upgraded, and I still think we overpaid Loauva (however you spell it) way too much for what he brings. |

Just using that as an example of how it's not always the O-line's fault. Who the QB is and how they play has a lot to do with pass protection. Another example is Kurt Warner. He was so good at punishing the blitz that teams would hardly ever blitz him. A lesser QB behind the same O-line might bet blitzed unmercilessly. I'm all in on RG3, but not to the point that I'm blind to his glaringly bad flaws. |

Its all preseason, im with the thread title, or a.portion anyway, no panic button untill we see live action

Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB
Cousins is about as good as he is gonna get. He is used to being a pocket passer but he is average or slightly above average. Once RG3 adds the pocket passer game to his game he is gonna be special.

That said its preseason, and I've been around long enough to not get too excited or discouraged about preseason. I'm not hitting the Panic button; however, I do reserve the right to push the button after watching the first four regular season games if necessary....
