The downside of trading KC too soon is that you completely hitch your wagon to what is a damaged and apparently injury prone horse.
For once me and Irish agree. If we trade Cousins away next year finding a replacement backup has to be a top priority. I'm definitely not willing to bet on Griffin having an injury free future after this one. |
I think we need to revisit this convo after Kirk has played in a few more games.
And, no, Smoot, you're not the only one who saw RGIII playing well before he got hurt. I saw it, my wife saw it (before she fell asleep on the couch, lol!) In the end, whatever and whoever gets us to another Super Bowl championship is who I'll roll with. If it's RGIII, Kirk Cousins, or Stone Cold Steve Austin, that's who I'll pull for. Team first! But for the record, if we do compare RGIII to Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien in their primes, RGIII is probably still head and shoulders over in terms of athletic ability and ceiling height.
What did your wife watch 5 minutes then fall asleep? |

Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
So evidently there are a number of QBs who suffered a lot of injuries early on in their careers and bounced back to be franchise QBs. What might present more challenges for RGIII than for some of those other QBs are the nature of the injuries he's suffered combined with his style of play. Much of his game is predicated on mobility; he's now had two knee reconstructions and pretty serious ankle injury. If this causes him to lose a step, lateral quickness, agility, etc., then he will be playing without his best attributes. I'd much prefer he'd torn his labrum into little pieces. That being said, it's foolish at this point to consider him finished.

Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
Anyone know whether Jordan Reed is likely to play v. the Eagles this weekend? It occurs to me that the Redskins-Eagles rivalry is now the most important in the division. I think the Giants are a pretty flawed team and won't reach .500, and I think Dallas has such signficant problems on D that they won't be any better. The Eagles are the team to beat in our division, and the way Chip Kelly has them playing, that may be true for some time (the Spoles/McCoy combo is pretty scary for opposing defenses -- if they upgrade at the WR position next year....) The Eagles D has some flaws, but they will score a lot of points. I hope Reed is available to us even though Paul did well in reserve last week.

I was saying earlier in the thread. I respect the commitment bias argument, but I don't think we can definitively say that going with Cousins is the better course of action, even if he plays very very well. Also, I think the advantage of staying with RG3 is that (provided Cousins has a good to great season) we can trade Cousins and still draft a backup plan for Griffin. We will not have that option of we cut our losses with Griffin. |
Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
Reed will play if he practices this week.

Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
Bottom line is this..trust your eyes! There were many plays in the Jax game that KC made that Im not sure RGIII would have..sure Robert would have showed more athletic ability..he would have ran more..BUT ..how about the reads and the quick throws KC made ..I trust my eyes and it tells me that Kirk has a firm understanding of this offense and given proper protection can lead this team to wins..only time will tell and I look forward to RGIII getting back to 100% it can only be a good thing for the Redskins to have 2 good QB's!

I've been stunned at how many career eulogies I've seen the past couple of days for Griffin. If he's back after the bye week then it's going to be quite interesting to see what some of these 'writers' have to say. With at least 7 games until then, we will fully know what Cousins brings over an extended period of meaningful playing time. He'll face all 3 division teams, the SB champs and 2 teams (Titans & Vikings) we should beat. This is as balanced of a window we could ask for to evaluate him and our QB future should be clearer, one way or the other, after they bye. Long term, I expect RG3 to be the starter, perhaps even finishing the season as such this year. |

On Cooley's film breakdown today, he said RG3 made that play much harder than it had to be. There was a play to be made way before he got anywhere near the sideline, but he didn't pull the trigger and ended up having to stiff arm a defender before making that awkward throw. I hope he comes back and is spectacular, but I have serious doubts about his durability. It's nice that he was playing well before he got injured. But the key words in that sentence are, "he got injured". Again. |

He's going to need it because he's got the Eagles, Seahawks, and Cardinals right at the door. |
Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
The skins will handle the Eagles, the difference maker will be Keenan Robinson and his speed at MLB. The last couple of years they exploited Fletcher's lack of speed up the middle and now we also have Hatcher. Cousins will be solid.

The Eagles o-line looked terrible against a weak Colts defense. Unless something goes terribly wrong, I see our d-line being able to dominate them and pressure Foles. |

We have to worry about McCoy and Sproles a lot more than Foles. So while we might get after him, part of their success comes from not being able to pin the ears back and go. A main key for this game will be Keenan Robinson. |
Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
I also want to see more Redd spelling Morris instead of Helu (might happen since he's hurt) This kid wants it bad. I know many liked Seastrunk as well as me, but man Redd just plays hard like Morris.

Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
Another angle on all this is, maybe Griffin can learn something from Cousins. Maybe he will see what he could accomplish if he trusts himself in the pocket and learns to see the whole field. And maybe the competition will light a fire under him and help him get over this hurdle and improve his game.

Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
It's early the media is building Cousins up, just so they can tear him down if things don;t go well. Being a pocket passer against Seattle is hard to do and will tell us a lot about Kirk.

Cousins has to prove he can scare the defense deep pr they will start playing closer to the line on him. He will be tested Sunday. People thought Ryan and Schaub were so great. Drop back QBs can fool you sometimes. Beck go the ball out his hands quickly but couldn't scare the defense deep. Cousins has his chance, he will be criticized just as much as RG3 was. |
Re: Griffin Out For Undetermined Time, It's Cousins Time
IF you want to save his career I would just shelve him for 2014 and let him work on being a pure pocket passer, and being able to run to need be. He started to slide properly, so he is catching on. He was playing really well before he got hurt. If you put him out there ASAP, it will be like another Shanny move with keeping him in the Seattle game, but if he gets hurt again this time, it probably will mean lights out for career for sure. If Cousins keeps the offense in a nice rhythm, it would be stupid to mess with that if we are making a playoff run as well. At this point it is 2015 or bust for RG III.

Unless RG III has a really great 2015 I can't see us resigning him. If they rush him out this season and he gets hurt yet again, we will indeed have a "Mr. Glass" on our hands. |

Exactly, this doesn't have to be a total negative for Robert. He needs to complete the transition before he comes back. I just hope they don't rush him in as soon as he is cleared. He isn't going to become a pocket passer in a month and will just be looking to get hurt again. At that point he may be toast. |

Commitment bias is a hell of a drug.
You don't trade Cousins at all, unless he totally blows his stint as the starter!!!!!! RG III gets hurt one more time nobody is going to make a deal for him, they will simply wait for him to be released once his contract is up. If they rush Robert in this season, I am willing to bet he goes down again in 2014. And if he goes down again in 2015, his value is nil. You need a guy that can play QB. Do you really want to go through this again, with needing to acquire a new backup as well? My bet is Kirk will do great against our weaker opponents and be exposed somewhat against the better out of division teams in the NFC. Right now though I think with the exception of San Fran the whole conference isn't all that. Seattle didn't look all that great this past Sunday. You need to keep an experienced player regardless. Can't build a winner with dumping all of your QBs with some experience. This saga isn't going to play out til 2015. Skins would be moronic to get rid of Cousins and keep RG III only to see him go down again, and realize they don't have one decent QB that can stay healthy. |
