Assuming he sobers up and wants to get back into the league Scot McCloughan would be an ideal candidate to get this organization back on track if this latest restructure doesn't pan out. Then again working for Snyder might not be the best scenario for someone fresh off a 12 step program.

McCloughan worked for the 49ers and Seahawks (The two most talented teams in the league) and was involved in drafting guys like Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, Richard Sherman, and Russell Wilson.
Snyder should back up the Brinks truck and do whatever they can to bring him here and help fix this mess. This is exactly what needs to be done. Whether or not he wants to come here is another story.
I couldn't confirm it before, but Ian Rapaport is reporting that the Redskins did indeed reach out to former 49ers GM Scott Mcloughlan. Don't know what the result was
Now that would be outstanding! Between him and Smith, and then Allen handling the money side of things, I think the franchise can be turned around.

It's a pipe dream to think that Bruce will be removed from personnel matters.

Everyone here knows that Bruce sucks at personnel. But Bruce himself seems to have no idea. And he is in charge. So, he can empower advisers, but in the end it will be his show because he doesn't know better.

Thinking that Bruce will remove himself from personnel matters is unrealistic.

McCloughan can pick his job, he won't come here IMO. He doesn't want to mess with our weird FO setup.

Thats the feeling I got originally.

But there is this Redskins contact McCloughan for top executive role - NFL.com

"Rapoport tweeted that McCloughan has interest in the Redskins job after also speaking with the Oakland Raiders."

The fact he has interest is great. Doesnt seem like he should blow us off, and at least wants to listen, which is awesome considering the height of the flames over the dumpster, especially after a Bruce Allen train wreck of a press conference last week.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

I won't get excited or even optimistic unless something solid, like an offer to McCloughan, happens. If he has his pick of jobs, especially between us and the Raiders, even with as bad as things are, our overall situation is more stable than Oakland. We don't have stadium concerns, we're in OK shape cap wise and have some flexibility with cuttable veterans that won't impact our future cap too badly.

I'd prefer him over AJ Smith and definitely over Allen. Glad that we are looking outside of the 'family' to get this mess fixed. Maybe Snyder finally is realizing that his way is a failure.

Bruce doesn't need to remove himself from personnel matters for it to happen. Snyder could do it. Bruce might not like it but I doubt that he would quit over it.

Exactly. I want to see him being introduced before I get excited. This may be something as small as a phone call.

Snyder could do it but didn't.

You don't expect Snyder to demote his drinking buddy and best snitching buddy, do you?

SnyderAllen is still trying to sell us Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. But this time it has an AJ Smith ornament on it. Big deal.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

Bruce doesn't need to be removed from having the responsibility for this to work favorably for the Redskins. Any good manager recognizes his own shortcomings and hires people to help fill the gaps.

Bruce could hire AJ Smith or Scott McCloughan (or both) and let them make the draft picks and free agency recommendations. Bruce could empower them to do that.

Then Bruce could remain in the position of negotiating contracts. AJ Smith could say hey we need to sign X player and Bruce could handle the negotiations, which has been a strength if you're evaluating him fairly. Look at the DJax contract, no risk, high reward.

So let AJ Smith or Scott McCloughan pick the players, but don't let them pick the price. I think it could work really well.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

From Rich Tandler:

So, would Bruce Allen be willing to give up control of football operations? Here's what he said when asked:
“I don’t mean to be repetitive, but if we can find a winning formula that’s going to help this team win on the football field, we’ll absolutely do it, and that includes me,”

SmootSmack can probably verify how much of Rapoport's info actually winds up being true, but I did ask him, via Twitter, if McCloughan was indeed interested in joining the Redskins, and Rapoport responded by saying "He is". So, there is interest between both parties. Now, what that means, I have no idea.

Exactly. Hiring McCloughan only makes Allen look that much better. Why in the world would he not go for this? Because he wants to be the head chief that picks all the players? This isn't Vinny Cerrato.

This still seems like a longshot, would you agree? It seems more likely that Smith steps into the head personnel role than McCloughan based on his closeness with Allen and the fact he's already 'in house' I would assume, especially the way the Redskins do business.

Ideally McC coming in from the outside with a completely fresh set of eyes and given full control of scouting and personnel would give us some legitimate hope for the first time since the '90s.

Yeah it's certainly much more a long shot than Smith. And I do have concerns about McC. I didn't realize that the Redskins had been using him as a consultant of sorts during the season.

Scot does have ties to Allen though, through his father/brother

the three of them together could be something interesting. Allen as President, AJ as senior executive, McC taking over for Scott C. The question is who stops Dan from chasing shinny Free agents and busts players her get obsessed with?

This would be ideal IMO. I think McC, while a great talent at choosing talent, still has to prove he can handle himself accordingly. These incidents were rather recent and I would like AJ and bruce over him. That's the last thing this organization needs right now is a high level executive effing up. The league's not in the mood of tolerating major eff ups right now.

Sooner the better I'd imagine to start putting together a plan. Senior Bowl is the first offseason event I think.

Networking is a normal part of many businesses, including the NFL and my own industry. Personally my point about networking was not about the act of networking, but who is doing it.

Bruce Allen's "networking" results in a last place finish for us every year. So we should either:

1) make searches open and competitive rather than networked
or
2) use the networking contacts of someone other than Bruce Allen and his cronies like AJ Smith

Since option #2 is impossible until we fire Bruce, I would vote for option 1, if my voice mattered.

So what's your opinion on McCloughan?

Pretty hard to take networking completely out of the equation no matter which direction you go.

It's not like we were some fine and dandy franchise before Allen came along.

Well, that's true. But replacing Vinnie with Bruce is like replacing herpes with chlamydia.

If Bill Belichick wants to network someone for us, I'm all for it, including McCloughan.

But if Bruce Allen networks, I'm concerned, 28-52 concerned.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

I thought Shanny had final say on all roster moves. If yes, why is Bruce being held accountable for the first four years?

If you want to fire him for not canning Jim last year, so be it.

Shanny received all the praise for finding Morris in the 6th round. He should receive the criticism for all bad picks.

I read somewhere earlier today (I did a quick search on Twitter but couldn't find the link/source) that there's still a play for both to come aboard because Smith is still reluctant to move to DC full time as would be required but he still may get a 'promotion'. There's probably a structure that works for both of them to share power a la Bethard and Casserley back in the day.

For example Smith could be over pro personnel like pro scouts, free agents, maybe even involved in final say on the 53 while McC could be the director of football operations and oversee the entire scouting department, draft, coaching staff, football decisions and the ultimate decision maker for any player acquisition or release.

Either way, as long as Allen is off hosting an alumni picnic while the adults are making these decisons, it's an improvement.

I could see it working, but only if Smith's 2nd cousin on his mother's side WASN'T the one who accidentally knocked up Scot's aunt of his father's 3rd wife who incidentally really liked Snyder's father business sense.
