But didn't Long have his knee reconstructed in Oct or Nov before the draft?
That takes awhile to come back from.
Long did have a knee injury in October of his Senior year. However, according to this link it was not reconstruction surgery Spencer Long of Nebraska Cornhuskers out for season, needs surgery on left knee - ESPN The Redskins have reached for O-Lineman that were ranked much lower than the Redskins picked them .... (LeRibus, Long, and Moses) so far they look like wasted picks.... I hope I am wrong |

I think Gruden is moving away from ZBS blockers but didn't change system first year. We need OL but we should see better OL play under Callahan. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
moses fell and was considered a bit of a value pick. the other two were taken at least a couple rounds early.
Agreed, and the crummy "regular" refs the NFL uses (why did we not keep using the replacement refs again? they would have gotten used to standing up to players) have a bead on Merriweather. Half the PFs they called on him were legit hits.
i think you forget how bad the replacements were. hint: they were terrible, and it was affecting the outcome of games. |

true, some places had Moses as a 1st or 2nd round pick.... not the NFL scouts though... he was the slowest OL at the combine, and one of the weakest. I do not share your optimism that a new blocking style will make him more productive. Morgan Moses Draft Profile – NFL.com |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Coming off a tough injury we probably can't expect much of anything from Moses this year. Shame.

Re: 2015 Free Agents
I still want Mike Iupati in a Redskins jersey. He and Trent next to each other can have that Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson look on the field

Me, too. Sign Iupati, draft the best RT candidate, and move on to fixing the defense. Lauvao should be OK as a member of that line. The only other FA I really want is Devin McCourty. I say pay the man! We need a top FS in the worst way. So, I say we should pay top dollar for a FS and an OG who we can can plug in and then only go for bargains on young players for any other FA's we sign. Cut the high-priced deadwood to pay for them. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Vernon Davis may be cut due to salary, 31 years old this year, depending on price of course, would you sign him? Former draft pick of Scott M ....

Vern is a local guy so he might want to come back to the area. My guess is to Baltimore depending on Pitta.

Re: 2015 Free Agents
Iupati is a must sign for this line. He may be resigned. I would gizz in my pant if the starting oline next year was
LT Williams LG Iupati C Wisniewski RG Lauvao or Long RT Scherff |

At least the replacement ref call GB vs Seattle was technically correct. There was no excuse for the detroit dallas pi reversal. Or the redskins giants td reversal where griffin was called a receiver when he wasn't, because he didn't jump up.

49ers’ Mike Iupati to miss Pro Bowl | The Sacramento Bee The Sacramento Bee
You're right. He only missed one game. The hurt knee and broken fibula were the year before when he missed 4 games. We could follow the pattern we have over the last decade and give the guy the contract he wants, you know, the one the team that drafted, developed, and knows him best probably won't give him. When a guy at his level is "testing" free agency, most of the time he isn't going to be a good value. He will command top dollar. With the rookie contracts being tilted so much toward the teams, the way to be consistently successful is draft first and look for bargains in free agency. (Green Bay, New England, Seattle, and San Fran) As mentioned in another thread, the Patriots are starting two undrafted free agents on their offensive line in the Super Bowl. Paying huge money for the best player at a position (QB and LT excluded) is putting too many eggs in one basket. Iupati has been a great player. He will be expensive, has a lower body injury history and is carrying 330lbs. He will not heal as fast as he did two years ago. Not a good bargain. |

Over paying for free agents with injury histories. The thing the new GM said he didn't like to do. Please see previous post above. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Iupati has probably missed 6 games in 5 years, I wouldn't call him injury prone. 49ers would keep him if they had the cap space. All I know is the OL would improve 50% over night.
|
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Guys, Vinny isnt here anymore so that paradigm is gone.
And if we only used the draft to rebuild we may make a playoff run in 2019. We need to look at FA as much as the draft as long as the salary cap is managed properly. |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Over paying for free agents with injury histories.
The thing the new GM said he didn't like to do. Please see previous post above.
How would we overpay for free agents if you have faith in the GM that we have?? When was the last time we "overpaid" for a free agent that was past his prime and over the hill? Iupati is 27 and just played in 15 games this season, don't act like we would be signing Deion Sanders right now to a 7 year deal. To quote you, please see previous post above. (Don't care which post, just pick one.) |
Re: 2015 Free Agents
Maybe SM can find a young Iupati in the draft. I'm hoping he gets 4 quality starters out of this draft, 2 o-linemen, a d-linemen and a safety. That would be ideal.

Nah, clearly the plan is to draft 53 new players all in one season who are gonna be Hal of Famers by year 2 of their careers, forget the fact that even the best teams use free agency wisely, which is what Iupati would be if we can get him for a good price. We just should get ready for that 2020 playoff run. |

I still want to move Amerson to FS, kinda surprised we haven't tried that yet.

It's still early. All that starts tomorrow. Still plenty of time to buy in, drink the cool aid, and spend way too much on Sunday Ticket, only to sulk next December. All it will take are a few FA/trade rumors. We have this off season in the bag. |
