From all that i have read about Jeron Johnson have been extremely positive..and im not talking about from Redskin sites or sources either. Im sure our new GM is very familiar with him and knows what he can do as well. Check out the Youtube video of his draft profile coming out of college. Four year starter.. leading tackler for 3 years..agressive explosive tackler...with speed. only real knock on him was his average size and athletic ability. You cant really knock him for only having 1 PD if he never really got playing time in Seahawks all world secondary. That said..he stayed on their roster and was a special teams demon.. I would love to see us sign this kid. He seems like an up and comer with the drive and hunger to play well for us. Just the kind of player we need and he wont cost a fortune either.

j johnson is a good depth and special teamer at worst. he's not any worse than all the other bad options at safety... at least he has some upside.

I think it'll be culliver/breeland outside, hall in the slot, amerson on the bench. hall could play FS, but he's so severely undersized that he'd be a durability concern. I don't think putting amerson there solves anything (he's be just as bad at FS as he is as a CB). hopefully we can ditch tracy porter now. he got $2M for playing 2 downs last year, #$@#$@.

trying to trade down to land the only decent safety in the top 2 rounds is a terrible idea btw. you're betting that the staff likes him, he'd fit, and that no one else would take him. it's also like giving yourself tunnel-vision and missing out on potentially better options for the skins future (like an elite pass rusher).

scot's offseason is running a solid A+ in my books (assuming culliver's off field issues don't affect his status with the team). the safe pick in the draft would be an OLB/pass rusher, grabbing j johnson and hoping he's good... and i have no idea where you're going to find a RT or starting safety right now though. we might just be scanning camp cuts for depth and waiting till next year if no one emerges. oh, and we need better QB play, so there's still that.

Dude is a Thumper, it would be really nice to have someone roaming the backfield that gives receivers alligator arms again because they know they are about to get destroyed, Like ST used to. ( I am not comparing the two directly, jus the concept). You can't fault him at all for not starting, I truly hate the seahawks they are right up there with the cowboys and eagles for me, but there is no denying that their safeties are beasts and some of the best in the league.

On another note has anyone else noticed that a lot of players come out and speak really highly of and are loyal to Scot McC, It seems unusual for a GM to have that, usually it is reserved for a coach. We really got a good one there and I think any of his former players that we want, w have a true chance at landing.

I like him to, doesn't mean that he has shown it's his job. Competition would only make him better. A typical safety takes 2-4 years to be ready to start in the nfl.

He's young, has plenty of potential upside, and has been part of a well-coached, well-disciplined defense.

No, he shouldn't get a "break the bank contract" but, there is shortage of true blue chip safeties on the market, and the current going rate for "just-a-guy" safeteys is well above vet minimums.

Bottom line, if you think Johnson is going to be signed for a vet min contract, (with all due respect) you're delusional.

i would rather roll the dice on J Johnson and possibly catch lightning in a bottle than take a shot on any of the remaining safties available not named Ron Parker and/or Landon Collins. I think he might surprise some folks and i trust SM knows what he is doing by trying to get him here. Worse case scenario he elevates our ST play and is a backup safety... both of which is badly needed as well.

what McC is doing with our defense really reminds me of the Seahawks, he is getting a big mean front seven that will get after the passer without blitzing and with the addition of Culliver and having Breeland both of whom have and real attitude and are not afraid to hit and get dirty at the corner spot, now all we need are some decent safeties and our defense is going from a major liability to a major strength.

Let Chip Kelly build his small fast offense it isn't going to matter much since Bradford is going to be on his ass constantly and their receivers and corners are going to be so beat up from constant bump and run and press coverage that they will be useless. In dallas tony and his bad back will not hold up long and we know Breeland can handle Dez. I think we will be a lot more competitive next year and not a look over game for anyone.

it does seem like SM is building our D alot like the Seahawks...but i remember hearing that our new DC wants to play mostly zone coverage with our DBs which doesnt appear to be their strong suit. I just hope we dont have our DBs lined up 10 yards off the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 2 like we did almost everytime last year in those situations.

People are fixated on what round safeties are drafted on. McC has drafted Richard Sherman a CB in the 5th round, Dashon Goldson on the 4th round. Who's to say he can't find a S in the mid rounds. Chancellor was also a 5th round pick. J. Johnson and Sherman are both from Compton, just saying.

We can use players like this. We cannot just over pay him, I agree on that. Give him a modest deal or a 3-4 year deal with pay escalators based on his play and performance.

exactly.. nobody is saying give J Johnson a 5-6 Mil a year contract. but a 3-4 Mil a year kr so contract is reasonable IF you think and expect him to be a possible starter. Lets be real here... if there is competetion for his or anyone elses services we desire sometimes you just may have to overpay a bit to obtain a player. i mean if all things and pay are equal would you come to the Skins if the Pats, Seahawks, Packers, Steelers or Colts were offering you comparable money?

What reliable source has indicated the Skins would over pay him? So far the contracts have been reasonable, and since BA has been here I think the Skins have made most if not all of their contracts within good salary cap management.

That said, if they put together a contract that has incentives and escalators that get him a number he will come here for, then his stats are far less important than the fact that he has been on a team that has incredible safety play and that Scot knows him from his rookie days and can evaluate how he has progressed.

Given our dearth of talent (maybe PT is an answer maybe not) at safety, bringing in a young player with upside for the right contract wouldn't be a bad thing. Might he be a dud, yes, but a well written contract protects the team from that. He might also be a capable safety who brings stability to the position and a well written contract provides him with the incentives to show it.

I don't see anything in J. Johnson's NFL history to suggest that he would help solve our starting safety problems. I'm fine with the idea of signing him to a modest contract for depth and ST help. I do like that the Skins are looking at secondary players who are good tacklers.

Perhaps the Skins should explore a trade for a safety.

Seattle slapped a second round tender on him last year as a RFA which entitled him to a salary of ~$2.2M although he restructured the deal. Bottom line, he was making close to 2.0M last year. He is looking for a place to start b/c he has been stuck behind Chancellor/Thomas but I seriously doubt he is willing to take a pay cut to do so.

Recent news on Jeron Johnson - Unsigned Free Agent - Rotoworld.com

In part the tender was placed on him last year b/c:
Many in Seattle’s organization feel Johnson could be a starter elsewhere if he had the opportunity.

The second-round tender placed on Johnson reflects Seattle’s belief other teams will be seriously interested in his services this offseason.
Seahawks place second-round tender on Jeron Johnson | ProFootballTalk

As I said, folks have been talking about him since before the market opened. Here is a good break down on him (from February):
"Hasn't gotten a ton of action because of the players in front of him (Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas), but when he's played he's been solid. He's a box safety more than anything -- strong against the run, a strong tackler, physical, tenacious," Kelly said. "He's a mainstay on special teams. Is useful in "big nickel" situations where you want a little more speed without sacrificing too much in tackling ability. It's tough to know how good he'd be in a starting role because he's rarely played."

Kelly does expect Johnson to seek a team where he could compete for a starting job.

"The Seahawks probably will make him a lowish offer but he's said that while he's loved it in Seattle, he wants to start somewhere, so it's likely he'll look for a new team," Kelly said.

Other teams that could be in play for Johnson include the Jacksonville Jaguars, where former Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is head coach, and the Washington Redskins. New Washington GM Scot McCloughan was a member of the Seattle personnel department when Johnson was signed.
New York Giants Potential Free-Agent Target: Jeron Johnson, S, Seattle Seahawks - Big Blue View

Several twitter insider folks have been talking about this guy for a while and are now saying that several teams have an interest in him:
‏@MikeGarafolo [Fox Sports] S Jeron Johnson getting action. Visiting the Redskins. Has other interest as well. Good special teamer and backup for Seattle last 4 years.

@Rand_Getlin [Yahoo Sports] Safety Jeron Johnson is visiting the #Redskins, per a league source. Market heating up for him. Super talented player.
So, has he "proven he deserves a middle level contract"? I concede he has not done so by his play - mainly b/c he has been stuck behind a couple of pro-bowlers. However, is he likely to get such a contract from someone based on his apparent reputation amongst the football people who are paid to know these things and appear to be interested in him according to the people who are paid to find out things from the football people.

If the Skins want to sign him, I would suggest it will have to be for a contract that is, at a minimum, in the $2-3M/year range and possibly approaching the $4M/year range with incentives. Bottom line, if Scot McC thinks he's worth it, I am more than good with it.

As with any other position, you decide what your next best option is and set a value on the player based on that. Taylor Mays is out there, no sign that he's a great player, but if the cost on Jeron Johnson gets to a certain point you simply pass and try Mays.

Nothing is black and white, that's where teams get into trouble and overpay. If after reading what I wrote above you're finding yourself thinking "but Jeron Johnson has promise to be an answer, Mays doesn't," then your thinking is still stuck in the Cerrato days of locking onto one player and overpaying to get him.

The approach should be the same as what McC has been doing, negotiate slowly. If the player gets your offer and immediately jumps to take it, you've offered too much. The offer should be one that he has to sleep on it and shop around. Then when he takes it, you know its a good deal. And if he doesn't take it then you move onto the next target. No paying A money for C players.

We passed on right tackles for this reason and for this reason landed two defensive lineman and a corner at favorable contracts.

Make a push for Johnson but be OK with it if he passes. There are other fish in the sea.

I basically agree. Particularly with the "if a player jumps at the offer deal you have paid to much." At the same time, I would suggest your example of setting the price based on next best option does have a caveat. This type of benchmarking only works for players of relatively comparable talent - after factoring proven abilities versus potential. If the gap in adjusted talent between a targeted player and the next best option is such that the next best option is a significant downgrade, the offer has to reflect the "talent premium." Teams have the choice of paying the talent premium or accepting significantly lesser quality play at a position.

For example, as you say, T. Mays is available. If he were truly the only "next best option" (I don't believe he is, not by a long shot), the Redskins would be faced with signing a player with potential talent to be a regular, solid starter who appears to have some market demand (Johnson) versus a player who has demonstratively proved he cannot hold a starting job with little to no market demand (Mays). If those are truly the only two options, then any offer to the Johnson must reflect the talent gap and market demand for such a player or the willingness to accept significantly sub-par play.

It's still a choice - what price is too much for the gap in talent? How important is it to improve the position? Can we be successful enough in other areas to overcome the talent gap resulting from a refusal to pay for the talent gap?

IMHO, based on the salaries currently be paid to safeties, the "next-best-option" after Johnson will cost in the $2M/year range - which appears to be the going rate for Joe Average starters. So, if McC thinks Johnson can be a solid starter in the NFL, an offer of $2-3M seems to me to be the reasonable price point.

I like the guy and, from all I have been reading, I think he would be a significant upgrade from anything currently on the roster. While I really hope that something can be worked out, I have confidence that Scot McC is not going to overpay for him given the way he has conducted his FA acquisition so far.

Keep in mind though:

The signing bonus is only $5M, so if he gets cut thats a low payment to hit as dead money.

The rest of the guarantees are in the form of guaranteed base salary. But if he is suspended he won't get the base salary, guaranteed or not.

So potential cap disaster is mitigated. But I hear you, if he's not on the field he's not helping us, even if there won't be terrible damage to the cap.

Yes agree one hundred percent, we are saying the exact same thing. The value you place on a player is a function of their skill set and the scarcity of similar skill sets.

And you don't deviate from that valuation, you patiently apply it to all negotiations.

Which is, of course, NOT what we have done in the past.

We're apparently interested in WR Michael Crabtree, according to NFL Trade Rumors. Culliver, Cox, and now Crabtree. Is Scot looking for character or characters?

Why not? All 3 can play, I've seen them for all their years here and Scot drafted the Crabster.

Crabtree would be either the 3rd or 4th WR. I am okay with that.

Again ... at the right price. Crabtree should not get starter money from us. Probably will from somebody else.

They could sign Crabtree and trade Garçon? Get some cap space for Williams, Kerrigan. Anything is possible with Scot.

I will have to go punch Scot right in the taint if he made that kind of move.
