So 3 of our draft picks aren't on the roster??? Surprised we didn't put Mitchel on IR after his injury. Colts are better than us and they snapped him up. Must have skills. Would like to know how those decisions are made on injured guys. Would be good knowledge to know.

Hopefully Spencer is at least put on practice squad. He seems like an old school Redskins. type guy.
If a player has less than 4 years experience he has to pass through waivers before being placed on IR if it happens prior to the first cut-down date.

I'm not sure but someone told me once the rule was put in place because Joe Gibbs used to abuse this
For players in their first few years, they cant be placed on IR until the first cut down date. When Mitchell was injured, we had a bunch of CB's already out. They had the option of practicing with hardly any CB's or waiving him and using his roster spot to sign another player. If they are waived, they have to clear waivers before he can be placed on IR. They took a chance and it didnt work out. Had we not had so many injuries to that position at the time, I figure they would have held onto him and then put him on IR when they could.
Beat me to it

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

yeah, i'm like 99% sure the plan was to keep TM, just not on the active roster. indy stole one from us, but it happens sometimes.

i'd like to see bates and trey williams make the PS, but sometimes the PS is used more for positions of need. those two showed up though. no real surprises. looks like ross and jeffcoat may have earned their spots.

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

Here are some players who were cut who might be able to help us. Comments by cbssports.com.

TE: Joseph Fauria (cut by the Detroit Lions) -- He has some pass-catching ability, but he isn't really much of a blocker. That limits his options.

C: Barrett Jones (cut by the St. Louis Rams) -- He was a surprise cut by the Rams. He can also play guard and tackle, so there is some position versatility.

DE: Jason Babin (cut by the New York Jets) -- He can play with his hand down or as a 3-4 outside rusher. He is 35, so age is an issue.

LB: Steven Johnson (cut by the Denver Broncos) -- He is a young player who has started and excels on special teams. He will get picked up after getting caught in a numbers game with the Broncos.

"All in all, the team has drafted 24 players, signed 27, and acquired two via trade."

I am impressed at how few of our 53 man roster were traded for. Hopefully over the next few years we will see a shift from signed to drafted, but I think this is a good sign overall about the difference in the way this team has been built over the last few years. Say what you want about Allen and the front office, but there has seemed to be a philosophical shift that came before SM. Now, that doesn't mean they made the right picks and FA signings, but at least we don't have so much tied up in bad trade acquisitions and big name FA splashes. Of course the RG3 trade is proving to be a debacle, but this team has been in worse shape. Now SM has draft picks and cap room to work with. I think in a few years we will have a competitive team.

Does anyone know if Bates made the PS yet?

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

i think we have to wait through waivers and random pickups/releases before we see the practice squad, so it might be a couple days still. by wednesday it should be finalized.

Does anyone know the percentage league wide number of practice squad players that actually go on to regular contracts?

the same year or eventually before they end their career? I don't really have numbers for either, just curious what you're looking for.

At any point. So lets say over the past 10 years each team has 8 slots so that's 8 players *32 teams * 10 years or 2560 practice squad spots. How many of those, or what percentage, have been called up to any teams active roster?

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

btw, it doesn't look like we claimed anyone off waivers. most teams took 1 player, tampa took 5. so our roster/squad is probably set for week 1 now. obviously breeland will be back week 2 and RG3 may or may not be a redskin by then. either way someone is losing there job here pretty soon.

well, first, there can be 10 players on the PS in 2014/2015, you can take 2 players that have accrued seasons now and most other players can be on the PS for 3 years now vs 2 a few years ago - assuming the article is correct.

as for conversion, i'm looking, but it's not super easy to find. i guess I can check on the redskins, but the teams swap out PS players every week, so it's hard to track (those 10 spots may end up having 20 different people fill them over a season). also sometimes players get taken from a practice squad so another team can use them for their playbook for 1 week and ditch them afterwards... i don't know that that should actually count as making it (it doesn't happen often but i remember NE doing it to a bronco's DE or LB and maybe NYG doing it once a few years back).

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

2012 - tom compton (OT) - going to be a big part of 2015

2013 (8) - will compton - 1 tackle in 2013, 60 tackles in 2014
- xavier nixon - indy took him from us - 4 games, 1 start in both 2013 and 2014 (for indy)
- chase minnefield (did some stuff in 2014)

2014 (we had 8) - philip thomas, signed active on nov 1, had 27 tackles
- chris thompson - obviously has value
- chase minnefield - 7 game appearances 4 tackles
- robert thomas (DL) - signed to the active roster for 1 day, then back to PS

others did nothing

so that's the last 3-4 years and only looking at what they did here, but the % is much higher than i would have thought to play in real games and contribute.

i'd call is 4/24 for those 3 years, so 16% from the world's smallest and possibly not at all representative sample size. (also these were from the aug 31/sep 1 PS roster list, i didn't bother trying to look up in season transactions, but if you check kffl etc during the year, there are a LOT)

Thanks. I appreciate you digging in like that. My initial thinking was less than 5percent so that is more than I expected. Still I think it holds that by most practice squad players aren't going to make or break a team's roster.

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

well, ryan clark was on NY's practice squad for 10+ weeks in 2002, lemar marshall was a PS player (ARI/PHI) that ended up starting 2-3 years here as a pretty good player.

obviously PS players are lower hit rates than high draft picks,, since they're (usually) UDFA's.

I don't see how anyone would not believe if RG3 stays a Redskin this year it isn't 100% Snyder's doing. Did everyone forget Gruden publicly throwing Robert under the bus last year? I figured Robert would be gone then. I would think the only thing he could do to change Jay's opinion of him is to light it up in 2015, and we know he hasn't done that. There is no upside to having RG3 on the team, anyone who has watched him on the sideline of the Jax game can
see he has mentally checked out. The circus around him isn't worth tolerating for a back up QB, especially for one who doesn't look like a team first guy anymore.

2 achilles surgeries and like, 37 career receptions. mainly an in-line blocker, but still seems kinda... meh. I guess he's a guy and we needed a guy.

Basically best available guy...and better than our current option at 3rd TE

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

Gruden on Rashad Ross:

“Yeah, a no-brainer,” Gruden said on Sunday afternoon when asked about Ross. “You talk about going out there and making plays, you know, and I’d be lying to you if I cut him. You’d say, ‘What about this guy? This guy made all kinds of plays and you cut him, you’re lying.’ So we talk about taking advantage of your opportunities, making plays, and we’re going to do what’s right by you, and the right thing was to keep him.”

I was pleased to see that he said this. He's right. Many people would have thought he and Scot were hypocrites if they had cut Ross. More importantly, by practicing what they preached they kept faith with Ross and the rest of the team.

That Guy 09-08-2015 08:16 AM

Re: 53-man Roster Predictions

honestly the chance that ross has any real bearing on this season are really slim, and I doubt guys like DJ care about what happens to the #6 WR, but i'm sure the borderline players appreciate it.

meanwhile, updated practice squad list (we're up to 9 now):
LB Houston Bates, OT Takoby Cofield, DE Corey Crawford, CB Quinton Dunbar, LB Terrance Plummer, TE Je'Ron Hamm, RB Trey Williams, FB Ray Agnew, LB Ryan Delaire

I think Ross could help this year. First, he can return punts and KO's. I haven't seen anyone else who impressed me doing those things. Crowder is supposedly a good return man, but I haven't seen it yet.

If DJ gets hurt, then we'd be without a true burner to stretch the field if we didn't have Ross. Crowder is more quick than fast and the other two reserves are possession receivers.

agree 100%
However he is so good at constantly reinforcing to everyone around him just how much of a "me first" kind of guy he is. I think most of the team can safely ignore him. If he has to stay, I just hope he "rides the pine" for the entire year."
