Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
I'm not sold on Long as LG or Licht as C anymore. Raji pushed him into last week & LeRib was thrown around all year. We have to be stout, especially in the middle.
And our short yardage backs are HORRIBLE. What ever happened to diving over the pile? We end up walking into the line standing up & getting stuffed, followed by a 2 yard loss. |
Well now that it's over let's look at the future.....[Kirk] He deserves it after this season, he carried the offense the whole yr. Run game was weak all yr for the most part.
Keep building the oline and defense and we are fine.
I think the WRs corps needs to be overhauled. Jay's offense is decidedly pass first. Jay's offense, by design, trades runs for short passes. While that's good for passing yardage numbers it imo degrades run game production. As logical by product of pass centered offense is more time and emphasis gets devoted in practice and gameplan to the pass then the run. So, Kirk carrying the offense is imo a major part of the reason the run game was weak. Anyhow...looking ahead I think the number 1 need for this team is a #1 WR. A true #1 WR in today' hands free secondary can change an offense. Imo one of the flaws in our passing offense is that Garcon doesn't consistently win nor separate when the play design doesn't do it for him. (Kyle was great at that btw). If the play calls for X to 'win' and gain separation on their on against press or man-under defense Pierre doesn't win often enough. DeSean on the other hand almost always 'wins' 1 on 1s press/man-under, or whatever. But DeSean doesn't run the whole route tree. In breaking routes, between the hashes/numbers isn't DeSean strength. A WCO with a #1 WR that consistently 'wins' changes everything. I would also try to create as physically a dominating OL as possible. I believe Jay will stick with run game more if the OL can maul dudes. Going forward my draft/offseason priorities are: WRs, CB, 34 DE, Pass Rusher, OG/C, Blocking/Well rounded TE, NT, QB |
Interesting take.
The same thing happened in Cinci. Dalton put up nice numbers at the expense of the run game. Its actually less about Kirk and more about Jay's offense. But, for me when one praises the QB in Jay Gruden's pass centric offense its that same pass centric focus that imo limits the run game in the first place.
Just look at the numbers from the last game. At a glance Kirk posted better numbers then Rodgers. But I would trade a bunch of those passes into Alf runs and maybe that would have been more productive/efficient? Anyhow...if we're gonna be a passing team, Kirk would be all that much better if he had a Dez or an Odell or even a Randall Cobb. What areas do you want addressed going forward? |

Initial list 1. strong safety 2. Mauler/large Center 3. ILB (along side Compton) 4. RB 5. CB 6. Run Blocking TE 7 WR There will be decisions to make with Pot Roast/Hatcher along the DL...it would be no surprise if we go d line first in draft. They are some ballers on the dline in this draft. |

Putting pressure on the QB changes the entire dynamic of the defense and can mask deficiencies at other positions. Would love to have a true 6'4" #1 WR and a true #1 CB. I think pass rush, WR and CB should be something a team should be willing to pay for while developing talent. Not sure where we stand on safety either. Hall was playing well and Ihenacho was playing well but is injury prone. I would guess an upgrade is coming. I think we are going to be serviceable at TE with Niles Paul coming back. Niles Paul is an absolute junk yard dog on special teams and I'm sure he will bring the same attitude to blocking in the run game. He can't block a DE but he will give it hell and has great hands. Also, not sure what Mclovin thinks about Spaight. I'm really interested to see how things develop this off season. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
when u have a guy like JReed things will be much easier on u, he's basically a #1 WR if u think about it.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
Many of you are talking about drafting a LG, we don't need one Kouandjio (from everything I read he has nasty attitude) will win that job next year. We do need a C.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
Our oline is fine guys yes we need a C and G but scot and Bill calahan will have that under control. Our main worries will be staying healthy enough to make a long run. Look at how young we are and all those guys already got great experience. We lost because we are not ready for the moment yet but just wait until next yr around this time when we will be right back in the playoffs. I'm not worried at all

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
My draft priority in a perfect world where each player in every round was equally good:
1. DE (Hatcher and Golston are probably gone) 2. NT (time for young long term answer) 3. CB (we need depth here) 4. Safety (Johnson was a bust and Goldson/Hall are getting up there. Duke is injury prone) 5. RB (Morris is probably gone) 6. TE (need depth behind Reed/Paul) 7. Anyone that can play special teams I would like more picks to get a G/C. Hopefully Kory and Shawn come back healthy next year and we can get some depth in free agency as needed. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
Clemsoning is still alive and well. Give up an onside kick and a kick return for a touchdown. And let a TE who hadn't caught a TD all year dominate them.
Damn, football has sucked the last 3 days. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
One interesting guy we had on the PS and just resigned for next year is Lynden Trail. He's raw and needs development but has nice size as a DE at 6'7" 269lbs.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
Well u need to put RB on the list and fairly high.
Sure for some coaches that is true for other coaches not so much. For me Jay falls into the not so much category. Net-net a "bluechip" WR is gonna have more impact on Jay's offense then a RB.
Everyone has different visions of the team they want and how to build it. But, I think first a objective view of both where the current team is AND the vision the current HC and GM might have play a role in making the projections about draft. That being said its tough to make a list of needs in order because the draft for me is about drafting the BPA and hopeful that addressing a position of need. So in that vain if quickly grade out the position groups based on level of production and depth and mix in overall impact delivered vs expected...this is what I get..... DEF: DL--D ILBs--D (scheme might be the cause) OLBs--B CBs--D S--C Pass Rush--Never, ever, have enough OFF: QB--B RB--B w/ Alf C w/o WR--C- TE--C OL--B My main problems on offense: Lack of WR that consistently wins Lack of Edge blocking in the run game Lack of Inside push in the run game/shotgun snap consistency Main problems on defense: Stopping the run (our rush defense actually got worse/part I think is scheme related) Pass coverage Pass rush Trying to prioritize: (1) WR (2) DL (3) Pass Rusher (4) CB (5) TE (6) OL (7) ILB (8) QB (9) S (10) RB |

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
^30gut I think McC vision with the personnel over rules Jay's offense. I still think Defense will be the primary focus this offseason.
But an injuried/fumbling Matt Jones and an Alfred Morris who is on his way out leaves us with clear Starting Running Back issues. We can look Chris Thompson who is another piece, who is another RB with an extensive injury history. We need multiple Running Backs additions and like I stated before, I could see 2 new running backs on the roster opening day along side Matt Jones. |
I'm saying offer hims what he's worth, not more
And if he's not willing to accept it, then so be it, he's not so good that we can't afford to lose him. He's not a top tier QB, I'd hesitate before even putting him in tier two. We won't be lost without him.
I couldn't agree more. Offer him what he is worth, and it's a good thing you aren't the one to figure that out. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
^30gut I think McC vision with the personnel over rules Jay's offense.
It must be a shared vision, I don't view it as Scott vs Jay. Scott is providing the pieces for Jay's vision, he's providing the pieces for him. If Jay asks for a pipe wrench Scott isn't going to hand him a screwdriver.
But an injuried/fumbling Matt Jones and an Alfred Morris who is on his way out leaves us with clear Starting Running Back issues. I wouldn't want to dig a hole and then have to turn around and fill it. And if they let Alf walk then they gotta be confident in Matt Jones as their lead back. I agree we should draft a RB but for me for this team its just not a priority compared to other areas. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
Even if you go with Jones, my concern is the constant rotation at running back. The only success I felt like we had was either a result of the line earlier in the season or having backs like Morris get into a rhythm. I don't know many backs that aren't Darren Sproles who come in for a single carry and take it to the house.
|
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
I think its evident to most that Alfred Morris is not in the plans. Matt Jones still green.

His parents have been fanning the flame of his ego his entire life. If anything I thought this season would have hopefully brought him back down to earth. He's in a battle against any person or organization that doesn't happen to see his greatness. You can only get away with that attitude when you are winning. When you are not winning and have that attitude you just look like an ass. |
Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
Edge rusher (maybe Galette- but do we draft one high before we know he is fully healed and capable? Absolutely- as 30 gut said - you can never have enough pass rush)
S CB OL DL RB TE (for depth) WR |

I agree, but it's like we let one back have a carry, rotate in another back. That back gets a carry, rotate in another back. I'd love to see ONE back get the carries for an entire series with another back coming in for only a couple of plays to spell the lead back. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
My biggest concern for Jay is that his default setting is to pass. A running game requires real commitment and patience. To me, Jay gives lip service to the run game but, in his heart of hearts, would prefer to pass for two yards than grind it out. Scot, on the other hand, strikes me as a down and dirty mudder. Eventually, I see this creating some tension.
With that said, it is a passing league now and to try and win the way we did in the 80's is simply not feasible. At the same time, it is not a one-dimensional passing game either; if the run is not a viable threat at all, as happened Sunday, then we simply cannot compete with the big boys. I really hope the off-season shows a commitment to getting down and dirty, to beating up the opposing team, and kicking them when they are down (in a nice-sportsmanlike way, of course). Just not yet sold that Jay is the guy to do that. Scot, yes. Jay maybe. |
Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)
In terms of drafting, I go after D early and often. Safety & ILB - speed and power in the middle of the fiddle at the 2nd and 3rd level. We simply lack that on D - lots of good/respectable players but no game changers.
Any Ray Lewis/Brian Ulacher types available in the draft?? |

I know both these position aren't flashy, but positions who rack up tackles and stop the run. Physical positions. Wagner is that volume, sure tackler who kills it in the run game. Line him up right next to Wil Compton. Kam is a strong safety who is another linebacker who plays close to the line for run support and athletic enough to cover and help. We need this. |
