Thinking about it today....what big time FA deal has ever worked out? By big time I mean fire up the jets and load up a dump truck with money type deal. I literally couldn't think of one. The guys who sign those deals basically can't even hope to play up to them much less outplay them like a team is hoping for.
well, this is from memory, but: reggie white drew brees peyton manning (sort of) london fletcher (not a brinx truck, but he was well paid). revis some others i'm sure. you do need something like a 90% hit rate on big money FAs to make sure you're not actively hurting your team's average talent year over year, and no one really hits that. honestly a lot of the best FA moves are the ones you don't make. switching systems and team mates can really throw the communication and knowledge of a person's fit in the scheme into the gutter. some guys have a lot more trouble figuring out their new role than others, which is part of the risk. our worst two, AH and AA, were both player that were asked to do things they never showed that they were good at (4-3 pass rushing DE that wants money -> run stopping NT that cares about football, and slow in the box SS -> centerfield coverage guy). |

As for a big time Free Agent that was a success? !.. cmon yall..how can yall forget the very 1st one?!.. our very own ... WILBUR MARSHALL!
i don't think we're looking to sign a 32 year old CB. especially one that still wants to get paid.
Darrell Green was pretty damn good at 41 too . . . and still ran a 4.4 40 at age 50 . . . it really depends on the player and position as to whether or not someone is worth signing at 32 . . . but not as a ridiculous asking price, that's for sure. |

Per nfltraderumors.com Redskins are one of several teams that are in on Mohammed Sanu.

I would be all for this . . . he is Big and Fast with good hands . . . he pays being AJ Green and put up great numbers when AJ Green was out . . . I think he is a hidden gem of this years FA crop |

At the price they paid they can have him. First impression is that he bolted for the first big offer, which rarely works out. If he took a few days to mull his options, determine the best fit, etc. then picked the Giants I would be impressed. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Sanu would definitely send Andre Roberts packing.

Anyone reading what Galette is saying on Twitter?
Junior Galette @JovaisG 1m1 minute ago The way these teams are just giving away money it feels like last year was the worst year to get hurt but everything nHappens for a REASON Dude, stfu. I'm getting a little done with him. Seems like all he cares about is getting paid. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
So far I'm liking this building up the D ,now we need a good couple of linebackers.

Oh well. Plus his past issues have me semi-convinced he's probably not a good person off the field. |

What's wrong with a player wanting to get paid? Not everyone can take discounts like Tom Brady. Probably shouldn't be tweeting stuff like that, but this is always going to be the opposing forces: teams wanting to get the best players for the cheapest/less risky price and players wanting to get the most guaranteed money. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
I don't have a problem with someone wanting to get paid. My problem is when that's ALL he talks about...

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Damon Harrison is a NT, going to a 4-3 scheme, I hope it blows up in his face.

Nothing but I have no doubts we have expressed interest in paying him fair market value over a long term contract, but he wants 1 year at a decent rate so he can get paid even more next offseason. He's projecting himself as a guy who will go to the highest bidder, regardless of how good they are, what they ask him to do, etc. How often does that work out for any NFL player? |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Just because Galette sends a few tweets over a few days about money doesn't mean that's all he's talking about.
Have to remember we hear and see about 1/100th of what these guys have to say. |

It's curious to me to see the G-Men spend so much on D-Line help in a year when the D-line is exceptionally deep in the draft.

Colt McCoy contract 3 years $9 million... year 1 cap # $2.8 million
decent deal for Washington considering all the ridiculous QB contracts Chase Daniel just got 3 years - $21 million WTH ? |

Honestly, having Colt McCoy as a backup at that Cap Number/Content kind of gives me a comfortable for feeling. While I agree that Colt McCoy, most likely, will never be a starter, he is a very capable backup, and I glad to have him for the next 3 years as a stable backup to Kirk Cousins. Honestly, for once, I am feeling comfortable confident in the Quarterback Position, going into the next season. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
yeah, the money today is kind of nuts. i think holding off may be the smarter play. the lack of good FAs this year is making borderline players rich. it looks like the 3 i was interested in are gone now.
giants have done pretty well, which sucks. maybe some of these signings can backfire on them... |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
A truly weak year for FA in terms of quality. I'm glad we're not one of the ones buying B+ players for A money. We really need to hit on our draft again this year. A similar draft to last year would really give us a great foundation. Once you have you can add a piece here and there to shore up spots.

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Im happy with our signings thus far. Going after our own guys and getting reasonable contracts. Im sure we'll add a few players here and there. I would like us to try to get Gilette back, but I agree his posts on twitter and the like have been silly. Someone asked if he'd take 3 years 12M and he scoffed. He hasn't played in two years and thinks he deserves more? I'd consider a contract full of incentives - prove you're back to playing form and you get the money!
Reese in NY is signing FAs like his job depends on it. Well, it most likely does. They've gotten some big name players. I think as skins fans we know how bringing in that many vets is difficult for continuity. It'll be an interesting year but I like our strategy. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
So a quick rant, so allow me to get on my soapbox:
ESPN980's focus on RG3 this week has been pretty pathetic in my opinion. I didn't catch the show when Cooley took his parting shots at RG3; but I tried to listen today hoping to hear some news about free agency and whatnot, and it was just horrible. From RJF going on the show to berate Cooley to people calling in to do the same, it was just terrible. I know controversy gets ratings, but come on, get the f*ck over it! I honestly feel Cooley just said this to get this controversy going and keep talking about this guy. I mean come on, talk about something else, talk about the FA signed, the upcoming draft, hell, even talk about the Giants shopping spree. :soapbox: |

RG3 ability to show restrain is amazing imo. |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
I would like the Skins to sign Reggie Nelson to a short-term deal.
I'd also like to see a deal get done with Junior Gallette. Junior is wacky but he can rush the passer. Beyond those two, I don't know. Perhaps Prince Amukamura could help us. I'm really not expecting the Skins to achieve much in FA with all of the mad money some teams are throwing around. It's hard for a team to sign the FA's they would like to have and still be able to stay the course cap-wise and financially. |
