Was at one point one of the great Defensive coachs in the league and coached what still may be the best defense ever in Chicago but to me he will be as his sons are an ASS.

RIP Buddy.
I think a few of those Eagles teams had just as good a defense as the 85 Bears. Not sure if this has ever been done since but the 91 Eagles defense was #1 against the pass and the run.

Whether you liked him or not Buddy Ryan was a great defensive coach.

I found him entertaining....it felt especially good though, whenever the 'skins beat his butt!

I agree, like him or not...he could build a heckuva defense wherever he went.

That's a good article. RG3 is showing his ass in Cleveland it seems, still the "RGME" that we had here. He deliberately throws the ball away over a 16 foot high practice fence, he also is having plenty of "look at me" moments like after he slides, he gets up and says "Who says i can't slide", etc..

Such a cocky guy for a draft bust and someone who is going to be on a team that might win 3 games this year. I really thought he had changed his ways.

How can he have such a big ego when he sucks??

I hear what the writer is saying, but honestly -- he's been relatively quiet so far and hasn't posted much of his usual crazy nonsense on twitter. I feel like talking about throwing balls too high and joking about sliding -- is unfairly picking on the guy. The Browns can't hurt us -- I'm fine with rooting for Griffin to revive his career there for his sake.

Let the guy play, and let the play do the talking. Wish they'd leave him alone at least until the season starts...

Who is messing with him?

He spent a few years drawing everyone's attention to himself with "Operation Patience" and "All in for week 1."

I guess I missed Niles Paul's all in for week 1 L.A. Gear campaign.

He wanted to stand out, he hyped himself to the moon, he fed into making himself a national story (which the Cleveland QB battle is now only because of him).

He doesn't get to turn it all off just because he wants to or should.

He will probably own a franchise after this season:

PS. I wish Kirk would forget about the "You like that" thing too. Just play.

In all fairness to Kirk, he wasn't really the one who made a huge deal out of the catch phrase - it was the media, and then the fans. He just used it to make some t-shirts that helped raise money for charity - I think that's a great thing. It's not like he's leading a "You Like That?" Chant in OTAs every time he completes a pass.

Luck with crazy money from Indy -- 1st 3 years guaranteed at $75MM. If I am representing Cousins, I tell him to take the franchise tag this year and gamble that with our O line and receivers he has a better year than Luck, and then negotiate for something massive thereafter.

Luck should pay Cousins 1 million for the rights to:

Massive Folly by the Colts for an underwhelming qb. I get he will be their starter for the foreseeable future, but I have never been on his bandwagon, and doubt I ever will.

He got the Flacco 2.0 contract. For that kind of money he needs to have 2007' Brady or 2013 Manning years, but I doubt his ceiling will ever be on par with Brady or Manning's. He might be above average but that's not above average money.

Some seriously delusional Colts fans out there. Seen several of them commenting how that Luck contract was good for Luck AND the team. Claims the team didn't get hammered too hard. Uhhh...what? He's the highest paid person in the NFL now with historic records in total contract and guaranteed money, and yet they don't think the team didn't get hammered?

Re: Around the NFL: Offseason edition 2.0

One more thing on Buddy Ryan, whether you hated or liked him, he was GREAT for the NFL. For those of you that are old enough, back then the NFC East was never better. Hands down the best division in the NFL. At one point you had Gibbs, Parcells, Johnson and Ryan. I think the most rewarding wins was the playoff game after the body bag game. Buddy Ryan was running his mouth all week. That game ended his career in Philly with a 20-6 loss. I think Cunningham was benched as well.

But his teams were always kind of dirty, led by Andre Waters. He would send a LB after the kicker on kickoffs. lol.

In terms of the going rate for a franchise QB and the expected yearly increases in the cap I'd say it's about right.

Schneed10 06-30-2016 12:39 PM

Re: Around the NFL: Offseason edition 2.0

I actually don't think the great franchise QBs make enough. We've got a bunch of good QBs making $17M, $18M. Guys like Dalton, Alex Smith, Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, Phillip Rivers. And then you have Aaron Rodgers making $24M.

The difference of $6M per year is what, a quality starting middle linebacker? Or a quality starting TE in the mold of a Marcedes Lewis? Maybe not even?

I would much, much rather have Aaron Rodgers than Phillip Rivers and whatever $6M in cap space can buy me. I think there's justification for Luck to make $30M+.

87 mil Guaranteed...basically 22 million more than the next QB on the list. I don't know...foolish imo and the track record for dumb contracts recently in Indy isn't great. The development of that team hasn't been great.

You could have gotten a better...maybe much better...team friendly deal negotiated.

What exactly is Lucks situation? In other words could he have signed elsewhere? If yes what team that needs a qb also has that kind of money to throw at him? Just curious.

Great question, this gets to useful specifics. He was signed through this upcoming season at $16M, but would have been a free agent in 2017.

According to OvertheCap, here is the projected cap room by team in 2017. I bolded the ones that are QB needy:

Buccaneers 62,557,050 - Winston would not stop you from signing luck
Patriots 62,426,481
Broncos 59,239,449
Cardinals 56,230,817
Bears 54,634,333
Steelers 52,367,705
Panthers 48,671,301
49ers 44,841,486
Browns 44,673,390
Raiders 44,387,278
Colts 42,205,426
Bengals 41,059,865
Titans 40,579,159
Redskins 40,574,496
Lions 39,130,414
Saints 38,993,067 Brees is also FA in 2017
Seahawks 33,706,790
Bills 32,486,952
Vikings 31,849,040
Falcons 31,583,760
Rams 31,348,342
Chargers 26,836,303
Packers 24,708,254

You don't think John Elway would pay ANYTHING to get Andrew Luck, with that much free space in 2017? Luck held every card in the fucking deck. The Colts were held hostage, they had no choice.

But - again - you dont gamble with potentially great young quarterbacks that have shown more than a glimpse of greatness on the field. If they didn't lock him up he would have been gone next year. Maybe it was a few mill over the current standard, but like Schneed said - whats that worth? One good linebacker?

All good points...its a really big contract and a lot of guaranteed scrilla.

For the second straight year Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain will be suspended to start the season. Sources tell Adam Schefter and myself that McClain will be suspended the first 10 games for violating the substance abuse policy. In March McClain was re-signed to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million but he could forfeit his $750,000 signing bonus.

OK well at least we're not disagreeing on the interpretation of the market, which would be really crazy. We disagree on Luck the player. I saw last year as a complete aberration thanks to playing with way more pain than he let on, he was really hurt. He is definitely capable of elevating a moribund team when he's fully healthy, and any improvements in that offensive line at all and he'll be back to hitting Hilton for TD after TD.

I'd love to be in a fantasy league with you this year, one more team owner willing to pass on Luck.
