Re: The Defense Only Thread
So since Berry became the Defensive Coordinator the skins have led the league in forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. Do you think that "we must strip the ball" attitude is a reason the tackling has been so bad? Will Blackman said he missed two tackles against the Browns trying to strip the ball. Are others?

I doubt he is preaching strip over tackle. Did see several plays on Sunday where it appeared they were more concerned witj stripping the ball, but, unfortunately, I think it is simply because they cannot tackle. Like once the guy runs for 14 yards stripping is the only option left. |

I think it could contribute a little bit, but Ive seen a lot of one-on-one straight up couldn't bring the runner down or the dreaded "arm tackle" because our defender wasn't in good position...cravens and wil ive seen this specifically. Ive seen Bruton straight whiff too a couple times...like dive and miss or dive and then reach out and miss. |

Anyway I've seen to many guy miss tackles just because of bad technique, not because they tried to strip anything... |
The Defense Only Thread
Tackling in general has deteriorated across the league the last few years. Not enough live contact in the offseason. Hard to teach something when you can't actually practice it enough to perfect it.

I disagree. If you go through High School, College and one NFL training camp and you still can't tackle well, you just plain suck at tackling. As a kid I learned to to tackle playing tackle football with no pads and playing rugby. By the time I put pads on in High School for the first time, I was one of the best tacklers on my team. Learning to tackle with out pads and a helmet makes you learn the proper technique because if you don't you will get hurt. I think this new generation sucks at it because they go for the big hit instead of using technique. I think NFL Football and NBA Basketball has moved away from basics and technique and are all about showboating and trying to make your opponent look bad. Sad. |

From pee wee on up they need to preach tackling. Wrap him up! That being said, even with the lack of live contact, Sunday was inexcusable. No reason a veteran should not make alot of those missed tackles we saw. |

Then you get to the pro level now and they can barely hit each other in practice. There's plenty of opportunity for coaching guys up in the pros, they just aren't allowed to do it anymore. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
I can't put it all on Barry when I see players missing tackles. We gave up 107 yards on Sunday after first contact. 107 yards!
I just other think we have the talent on defense and no coach is going to fix that this year. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
It is time to find another defensive coordinator. If the team is dead last!

Sure I like the fact it's a physical game, I player CB so I appreciate the courage and will it takes to lower your shoulder to tackle a guy twice your size. But I don't care seeing a guy get destroyed, and probably concussed... I can watch UFC for that. But a lot of people do, not knowing a lot about football, watching big hits highlights and stuffs... And maybe it influences players into thinking they're gonna be famous if they KO opponents... Wrap 'em up, true fans will appreciate ! |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
Redskins just cut Kendall Reyes. Making room for Knighton?
|
Re: The Defense Only Thread
Tackling was a lot worse against Cleveland than it was in the first two games; someone pointed out that Cleveland has the top running game in the NFL. That will always make a defense look bad at tackling; a lot of the "missed" tackles are guys desperately throwing their arms out because they're late to the spot and not in position to make the tackle.
I'm not as worried about the tackling as I am about this team's inability to stop third and long. We're making enough tackles on first and second downs to force third and longs, and then we're surrendering 10, 15 yard completions. |

Too me this is a strike against Barry too...because that's why he is here. He was fucking terrible too. |

Barry probably recommended him, however Scott signed him. And Scott drafted no help on the D line. Where are all the "experts" who said they do not need a NT because the NFL is a passing league. |

I definitely think it's a DL solution. Golston was always the goalline monster and he's out. Without him, you saw how Alfred Morris and Crowell both just absolutely waltzed into the end zone on those goalline plays. They still like Everett, he makes for the fourth safety. I think they've discovered that Ionnidis is not ready, and they know that Ziggy Hood would be much better as a DE. Reading the tea leaves I'm pretty sure this means Knighton is coming. |

Well there you go, I could be quite wrong. We'll see. Still think they need a DL solution. Having a rotation of only 6, with Ionnidis and Lanier being 2 of the 6, that's just inadequate. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
We definitely need a big body up front.

reportedly Whitner signed

Re: The Defense Only Thread
Whitner is a good tackler, so I understand if McCloughan goes in that direction.

I won't shit on Barry if he tries, but to just sit back and play basic defense and get paper cut to death is annoying. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
Witner may be able to tackle, he will at least hit someone. In the end this is just another band aid. Signing guys off the street mid season isn't going to solve our issues on defense.

I think replacing Bruton with Witner would certainly bring a positive change to the starting defense. But this certainly isn't a long term fix.. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
I wonder whether they bring in Whitner and Pot Roast, cut Iannodis and resign him to the practice squad.

Re: The Defense Only Thread
To the extent you buy into Pro Football Focus, Whitner graded out well last year in Cleveland and very well the year before that in San Fran. Still an effective player it seems.
But yes, not a long term solution. But if he shores up some tackling and brings some big hits that keep the defense from getting discouraged, it helps keep everyone engaged this season, which still makes a positive impact. The thing that gets lost is there's a potential negative effect on the current roster if we just sit idle. Players like to know their front office sees what they're seeing and tries as hard as they do to get Ws in the here and now. It helps build the culture you want. McC will have to balance that against our long term ability to build a roster. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
So, wait was it a joke or confirmed that we signed Whitner? I can't find any sources on it.
|
Re: The Defense Only Thread
Either a joke or someone talking out of school. There's no indication that we've signed him yet - the latest we have is Mike Jones on twitter two hours ago saying Whitner was at Redskins Park.
Don't know if he's still there or not. |
Re: The Defense Only Thread
It will interesting to see what they do next offseason. It would be great if most of the BPA's in the draft were on defense. We seriously need 3-4 drafted players that can contribute on defense, and maybe a FA or two.
